The Mean and Nasty Northern Pike

Fly fishing on rivers and lakes is often portrayed as being a communal zen time in nature. Seek out the Northern Pike, however, and you are in for anything but a peaceful time. 

The Mean and Nasty Upper Pike 

The Pike is undisputedly a design of some devil figure. It is big, quickly, and mean. It's the unusual person that could explain the pike as anything but unpleasant. We're talking strike with the ugly stick more than a few times ugly! Just to top matters off, this devil spawn has teeth that would create a crocodile hesitate. We're referring to the largest, baddest fish around. 

The Northern Pike is carnivorous as suggested from the bear trap that serves as a mouth. Basically, we're referring to the same of sharks in the open oceans though they're often jokingly called a water wolf. Pikes will eat anything from bait to sport fish to ultimate demon frogs towell, you get the idea. If it will get to it, consider it trap. Yes, the pike will eat other pikes. 

The Northern Pike can grow large. It is difficult to sort rumor from fact, but they can run-up to 3 or 4 feet in length. Rumors of much greater pikes abound much like the Yeti, but there has been little evidence they really exists. The greatest one every found was a 3-4 pound beast in Nejanilini Lake in Canada. 42 pounders have now been described, although not noted. 

As with any predator, the Northern Pike is focused on stalking. It tends to hunt food by waiting in along shores in areas with protection for example lilly, weeds, or where coastline vegetation runs out to the water. This can be a rogue. It happens quickly and viciously, therefore be ready to respond quickly in the event that you land one. 

The Northern Pike is usually not much of the treat given a really boney body. That being said, big pikes are a regular food supply in areas such as Siberia.
