== Vancouver bans door knobs ==
 +
 +
<html>The city of Vancouver has amended its building code to outlaw the use of those wrist-twisting devices in all new construction, including private homes. Door knobs had already been opener non grata in large buildings. The new ruling, effective in March, will not affect existing homes.
 +
 +
 +
Instead of door knobs, new buildings will be equipped with easier-to-manoeuvre levers. The change is a victory for what's known as universal design,[http://lampit.in/product.html <em>Patriots Jerseys Sale</em>], creating spaces and buildings that are easily accessible for everyone.
 +
 +
 +
"This is very progressive of Vancouver," says Howard Gerry, a professor specializing in universal design at Toronto's OCAD University. "It makes good sense, even for private houses. Think about an aging population or an individual carrying groceries or small children. Levers make access easier."
 +
 +
 +
Some critics, however, see the knob ban as overkill. "No pun intended, but it seems heavyhanded," says Frank Garcea, vice-president of construction for Monarch Homes.
 +
 +
 +
In Ontario,[http://wiki.incruit.com/index.php/%EC%82%AC%EC%9A%A9%EC%9E%90:Tiflyfms7#State_lawmakers_pass_Internet_privacy.2C_.27revenge_porn.27_bills <span style="font-weight: bold">State lawmakers pass Internet privacy, 'revenge porn' bills</span>], door knobs are a dying breed in public buildings. The Ontario Building Code stipulates that door openers must not require "tight grasping and twisting of the wrist" in all buildings except houses.
 +
 +
 +
The Municipal Affairs and Housing Ministry held public consultations earlier this year about enhancing accessibility. No decisions have been made on how the code might be amended.
 +
 +
 +
But is Vancouver's move just the beginning of the end? Is the door knob doomed?
 +
 +
 +
"I say, good riddance. It never functioned well," explains Gerry. "I don't view it as a good piece of design."
 +
 +
 +
"Perhaps it is doomed,[http://ymwiki.kapsi.fi/index.php?title=K%C3%A4ytt%C3%A4j%C3%A4:Haezhsin4#Greg_Tufaro.27s_NJSIAA_playoff_first <span style="font-weight: bold">Greg Tufaro's NJSIAA playoff first</span>]," adds June Komisar, associate professor of architecture at Ryerson University. Architecture students are now taught early on to design projects for universal access, she says.
 +
 +
 +
The wave of the future is probably electronic entry, says Gerry. "Maybe we'll have tags under our skin so you get close to the door and it's geared to open," he suggests.
 +
 +
 +
Still, the door knob has defenders. "I'm shocked to hear this," says Sam Mirshak, owner of the architectural antique shop, The Door Store, when told about the Vancouver ban. "I can see it for community buildings and institutions, but not homes.
 +
 +
 +
"I have strong feelings about hardware. Door knobs are lovely. They're the jewelry of the door."
 +
 +
 +
Door knobs began replacing latches in the early 1800s in the U.S., particularly after manufacturers made pressed-glass knobs, says Allen Joslyn, president of the Antique Door Knob Collectors of America. Then, in the 1860s, the Victorians, loath to leave anything undecorated, created intricate and embossed knobs.
 +
 +
 +
"I don't think it's doomed. Even in Vancouver,[http://swargaranischool.com/newjus_invcerm.html <em>Cheap Authentic New York Giants Jerseys For Sale</em>], they're not asking people to retrofit," says Joslyn confidently.
 +
 +
 +
Builder Garcea isn't worried about the knob's residential future. "I've done lots of upgrades over the years," he says. "No one has ever asked me to delete all the door knobs."
 +
 +
 +
But only antique knobs stir nostalgia, points out Gerry. "The contemporary ones are just round pieces of steel."
 +
 +
 +
Levers now come in a range of designs,[http://lampit.in/product.html <em>Patriots Jerseys On Sale</em>], including options with an old-fashioned esthetic, he says. Some day people may collect antique levers, admiring the beautiful patina acquired through age and wear, he suggests.</html>

== Amanda Bynes ruled fit to face trial ==
 +
 +
<html>Embattled actress Amanda Bynes has been ruled mentally competent to stand trial for a charge of driving under the influence (DUI).
 +
The Hairspray star has been under medical care since July,[http://swargaranischool.com/newjus_invcerm.html <em>Cheap Authentic New York Giants Jerseys For Sale</em>], when she was hospitalised for a mental health evaluation after weeks of erratic behaviour, which culminated in Bynes reportedly starting a small fire on a driveway in Thousand Oaks, California.
 +
Recent reports suggested doctors had succeeded in stabilising her behaviour through psychological counselling, and on Wednesday,[http://swargaranischool.com/newjus_invcerm.html <em>Cheap Authentic New York Giants Jerseys On Sale</em>], a judge at Los Angeles Mental Health Court reviewed her official medical evaluation and declared her fit to face the DUI case.
 +
The 27-year-old's lawyer, Richard Hutton, did not contest the decision during the hearing, which took place two months after he alleged his client did not have the mental capacity to understand the nature of the legal proceedings, reports TMZ.com.
 +
The case relates to an arrest last year, when she was slapped with the DUI charge after allegedly side-swiping a police car in California.
 +
Bynes, who has been placed under the temporary conservatorship of her mother, Lynn, is also facing charges in a separate case,[http://agr.niigata-u.ac.jp/~naser/bonsai/e-bbs/e-bbs.cgi <span style="font-weight: bold">Fire at Old Bridge commercial</span>],[http://lampit.in/product.html <em>Patriots Jerseys On Sale</em>], following a police raid on her New York apartment in May. <html>As show loses A-listers to 'GMA,' booker Melissa Lonner is on the way out at 'Today' There is nothing like a dame for Helen Mirren; Blake Lively's on the move after a treat; Hugh Jackman has cancer scare  BY MARIANNE GARVEY, BRIAN NIEMIETZ AND LACHLAN CARTWRIGHT Friday, November 22, 2013, 2:00 AM  Share This URL:    Charles Sykes/Invision/AP The ‘Today’ performance by One Direction (from l.: Niall Horan, Harry Styles, Liam Payne, Zayn Malik and Louis Tomlinson) was produced by the show’s booker Melissa Lonner.
 +
Fiery “Today” entertainment booker Melissa Lonner is on the way out, with sources telling Confidenti@l the morning show won’t bring her back when her contract expires at the end of the year.
 +
 +
Lonner,[http://wiki.comunidadhuayra.org/Usuario:Etykoocd6#Bryant_Park_skating_rink_shooting_suspect_smiles_as_he.27s_led <span style="font-weight: bold">Bryant Park skating rink shooting suspect smiles as he's led</span>], known for her intensity around the NBC offices, is said to be “notoriously aggressive” when it comes to booking A-listers and big musical acts, including Justin Bieber.
 +
 +
“She followed her own rules and treated publicists across the country like s—,” one source tells us. “She screams and yells and never calls anyone back.”
 +
 +
Her aggressive approach was apparently polarizing, but NBC honchos turned against her after ABC’s “Good Morning America” passed “Today” in the ratings last year and started landing bigger stars.
 +
 +
“Melissa’s tough — some call rude — style was fine when the show was number one,” one source who has dealt with Lonner for years tells us. “Publicists, agents and managers had no choice but to have to learn to deal with her to get their clients on ‘Today.’ But it is a new day in morning TV. More people are watching ‘GMA,’ and no bookers at ABC are nasty to deal with.”

Melissa Lonner is known to be tough when dealing with publicists.
 +
 +
As “Today’s” top booker, Lonner is responsible for all entertainment-related guests, and produces the show’s Summer Concert Series, landing acts including One Direction,[http://senkousya.s155.xrea.com/black_shadow/joyful/joyful.cgi <span style="font-weight: bold">SEE IT- 3 adults, 4 children </span>], Maroon 5, John Mayer and Michael Bublé.
 +
 +
Internally, the spin on her departure is that it was a mutual decision. But another source tells us that’s not the case, and that Lonner was “blindsided.”
 +
 +
“She was the head of the unit that got the show its biggest gets and thus, ratings,” says an NBC insider. “She ran a tight ship. When celebrities came on the show she assigned the producer. She also demanded that staff not working directly on the segment would need her written permission to be in the studio if their favorite star was on. That didn’t go over well with the staff.”
 +
 +
But ultimately, it came down to the numbers — and the names.
 +
 +
“ ‘GMA’ were getting all the best guests,” says the source. “It is as simple as that. Once the ratings changed, people who were thought to be loyal to ‘Today’ followed. Melissa lacked the charm to win them back.”
 +
 +
Our source says the final straw was when Entertainment Weekly handed its “Frazier” reunion to “GMA” — even though “Frazier” was an NBC show.
 +
 +
An NBC exec insists,[http://swargaranischool.com/newjus_invcerm.html <em>Cheap Authentic New York Giants Jerseys On Sale</em>], “Melissa has a proven track record of booking A-list guests,” and a spokeswoman for the network denies all the allegations.
 +
 +
“While we don’t comment on personnel matters, this [story] is completely false,” the rep said.

DAME YANKEES!
 +

Well, I’m be dame. Helen Mirren is not going to be addressed with anything other than her proper honorary title. A source tells us that at a Scripter Awards selection meeting at the University of Southern California, Mirren was quick to correct anyone who garbled her damehood.
 +
 +
“She was addressed as Dame Mirren and looked completely aghast,” says our source. “She corrected me and said, ‘It’s Dame Helen!’ ”
 +
 +
Mirren landed the lofty title — akin to being named a knight, but for women — in 2003, when Queen Elizabeth appointed her an Officer of the Order of the British Empire. Fellow honorees in her ceremony included David Beckham and Sting.

In 2006, Mirren played the woman who made her a dame in “The Queen.” The Scripter Award goes to author and screenwriter responsible for the best adaptation of printed word into film.

While dining in midtown last year, big-spending billionaire Stewart Rahr overheard contractor Michael Levine talking about his 8-year-old son’s battle with kidney disease and wrote him a check for $100,000. And he wasn’t done shelling out. Rahr missed a kidney disease fund-raiser at Capitale because he was in London on Thursday, but sent his bodyguard “Big Tommy” to surprise Levine with another $100,000. The guest list included former Yankee David Cone,[http://lampit.in/product.html <em>Patriots Jerseys On Sale</em>], actor Cuba Gooding Jr. and reality stars and accused fraudsters Teresa and Joe Giudice.

== Reactions to the Jason Vargas signing ==
 +
 +
<html>As you most certainly know by now, the  signed starting pitcher Jason Vargas to a four-year, $32 million contract on Thursday, making their first major splash of the offseason.
 +
 +
There's a number of ways to evaluate this contract and each one of them gives you a different opinion on how good of a deal this is for Kansas City.&nbsp;did a dollars-per-win evaluation, and thinks that Vargas has a good chance to provide $32 million over the life of his contract:
 +
 +
$32 million is paying for something like +5 WAR over the next four years, and even if we just project him for +2.0/+1.5/+1.0/+0.5, then we'd expect him to produce exactly +5 WAR over the life of this deal. This isn't a gross overpay. It's just transferring some of the cost of signing an average pitcher from 2014 to 2017.
 +
 +
I think Cameron makes some solid points in his article, and shows why many Royals fans don't flat out hate this move. It doesn't look like it will be a drastic overpay, and hopefully will not limit the team too much financially down the future.
 +
 +
doesn't understand why the Royals needed to spend four years on a pitcher like Vargas, who offers little upside (Subscription):
 +
 +
It makes the Royals a little better for now,[http://lampit.in/product.html <em>Patriots Jerseys On Sale</em>], but Vargas operates with such a slim margin for error that he could end up cannon fodder by the middle of the deal, especially if he loses another half-grade of velocity.
 +
 +
Vargas could be one of those guys who hangs on for awhile since he "knows how to pitch" and has consistent mechanics, so his loss of stuff won't impact him as much. Royals play-by-play annoucer/ hype man&nbsp; attempted to present the argument on Twitter, so I'm sure you will hear it again.
 +
 +
Of course, Vargas' stuff has never been overpowering to begin with, so if it slips some more, he could fall off a cliff. I doubt Vargas will be apart of this team's starting rotation in 2017; the final year of this deal is probably going to hurt. ZiPS thinks Vargas is going put up three wins over the life of the contract, which isn't exactly encouraging:
 +
 +
Remember, tried to spare you!
 +
 +
Dan Szymborski (@DSzymborski)
 +
Szymborski does think Vargas will outperform the projections, and he might with the help of Kauffman Stadium and a strong Royals defense. Still, it would be nice to see better projections from a player that will be expected to start every fifth day.
 +
 +
is waiting to completely judge the deal until we see what else the Royals do this offseason:
 +
 +
If this is the first of two or three moves, then I think it could be a nice setup for this team moving forward, but if he is the last of the rotation upgrades, the 2014 Royals are going to struggle to match what the 2013 Royals put up... I just think he's far too average for him to be the big addition to a rotation looking to compete for a division title in 2014. So yeah, the move itself is just average, but I don't think it does a good enough job of filling the Royals needs.
 +
 +
I completely understand Lesky's current fence-sitting. Vargas would be a nice upgrade over /, but there is a real fear that he is going to be expected to replace Ervin Santana. Especially when Kansas City Star beat writer Bob Dutton tweets out things like this:
 +
 +
Think he'll be No. 2 in rotation.  Mr. Dutton, what are your thoughts on the Vargas signing?
 +
 +
Bob Dutton (@Royals_Report)
 +
Dutton is just guessing, but he is about as connected to the Royals organization as they come, so his guesses should hold more weight than ours. Moore indicated in the press conference that the team is still searching for upgrades to the rotation, but also said that they would be comfortable with the pitchers the pitchers they have.
 +
 +
Unless you are really high on ,  and  in 2014, there is no way you can expect the Royals to replace Santana's 2013 production with their current crop of starters. The defense should help,[http://swargaranischool.com/newjus_invcerm.html <em>Cheap Authentic New York Giants Jerseys On Sale</em>], but this team still needs to improve from last year, and Vargas at the number two is a clear dropoff.
 +
 +
I mean, the Royals are trying to actually reach the postseason in 2014, right? Unless something completely unexpected happens,[http://lampit.in/product.html <em>Patriots Jerseys Sale</em>],  will be pitching for a new team in 2015, leaving the team without a clear top-of-the-rotation pitcher. The window for reaching the playoffs is now, and Vargas barely moves the needle in the correct direction.
 +
 +
Finally, the Vargas and  contracts should show why it's so important,[http://aibixin.com/forum.php?mod=viewthread&tid=2312 <span style="font-weight: bold">The earliest of early mock drafts- Rounds 7</span>], especially for a team on a budget,[http://www.hesolucoes.com.br/wiki/index.php?title=Usu%C3%A1rio:Lymyrggm7#Ohio_State-_Big_Problem_Surfaces_for_the_Buckeyes <span style="font-weight: bold">Ohio State- Big Problem Surfaces for the Buckeyes</span>], to develop young pitching. If Vargas does indeed break camp as the No. 2 starter, then the Royals will have spent around 1/3 of the team's budget in 2014 on the top three starters, and will receive 8 WAR at best. That's a pretty expensive investment without a whole lot of return.
 +
 +
Vargas' contract doesn't look terrible, but it's too long and leaves the Royals still searching for another top-end starter. If the team decides to make Vargas the No. 2 starer in 2014, this deal will probably end up looking worse.</html>

== Julian Edelman Outshines Wes Welker, Danny Amendola in Patri ==
 +
 +
<html>Share this:
 +
FOXBORO, Mass. There were three traditional slot receivers on the Gillette Stadium field on Sunday night, and only one of them eclipsed 100 yards, scored two touchdowns and pulled in nine receptions:?Julian Edelman.
 +
 +
After?Wes Welker?and?Danny Amendola?signed nearly identical contracts within hours of one another in March,?Julian Edelman?became an afterthought. All 32 NFL teams had a shot at the former college quarterback,[http://swargaranischool.com/newjus_invcerm.html <em>Cheap Authentic New York Giants Jerseys On Sale</em>], yet he was only able to get a one-year, $765,000 contract with no guaranteed money from the Patriots nearly a month after Welker and Amendola signed.
 +
 +
Edelman is already outproducing Amendola this season, and, after Sunday night s game, he s creeping up on Welker,[http://www.flypower-arbi.com/index.php/component/k2/item/105-bwf-world-senior-championships-2013-wakil-indonesia-melaju-ke-babak-semifinal <span style="font-weight: bold">Valerie Adams plans return to</span>], too. Edelman had nine catches on 11 targets for 110 yards and two touchdowns. His biggest play was a 43-yarder where he wound up wide open after shaking Denver s defenders with a double move.
 +
 +
Welker finished with four catches and 31 yards on eight targets, getting shut down by?Kyle Arrington,[http://swargaranischool.com/newjus_invcerm.html <em>Cheap Authentic New York Giants Jerseys For Sale</em>], and Amendola finished with three catches on six targets for 17 yards.
 +
 +
If Brady wasn t so good in the second half, Edelman would have been the clear star of the game. And he was able to have such a great game despite getting limited fanfare all week in Welker s grand return to Foxboro.
 +
 +
Edelman deflected questions about his impact in the game (almost as well as he deflected passes as a defensive back in 2011), which also included 39 yards on three punt returns.
 +
 +
Well, I fumbled a punt after I muffed one, so that s not that good, Edelman said, downplaying his impressive game. I havent even thought about it. Today, my number was called a few times, and I was able to have a couple opportunities, and I just try to take advantage of them. A couple games back it was KT [Kenbrell Thompkins], AD [Aaron Dobson], Danny. Thats our job our job is to be able to get open and catch the football, and I was able to do that a few times.
 +
 +
There s a reason Edelman goes so unheralded. He s a funny, charming personality if you look into the fifth-year player, but in speaking to the press, Edelman rarely shows that side. And he s never been the team s No. 1 option.
 +
 +
Edelman was overshadowed by Welker and?Randy Moss?when he first came to the Patriots in 2009, and he s had?Rob Gronkowski?and?Danny Amendola?(and one other player who sits in Bristol County Jail) stealing headlines recently. But Edelman has been the team s most dependable option by far this season.
 +
 +
He s been so dependable and consistent all year for our team, Tom Brady said. Hes been the one veteran player on the offense whos been in there and been around. He did a great job. He always does a great job. Hes tough, smart and disciplined. Its fun to see him do well because he deserves it.
 +
 +
Some games Thompkins or Dobson will shine. And there have been games when Amendola has been the star, but Edelman keeps plugging along. And now he s got 61 receptions,[http://lampit.in/product.html <em>Patriots Jerseys Sale</em>], 610 yards and four touchdowns to show for it.
 +
 +
Julian did a great job, Bill Belichick?said. First of all, he did a good job of handling the ball, especially in the third and fourth quarter there. Made a couple good runs with the ball in his hands,[http://81990.cn/bbs/home.php?mod=space&uid=35668 <span style="font-weight: bold">Explore Long Island_3</span>], also got open, caught the ball. The end route he got there gave us the field position in the overtime, it was a big play.
 +
 +
For years, Edelman showed this type of potential. And some argued going into the offseason that the Patriots didn t need to sign Welker or Amendola if they could lock up Edelman. But he had never proved he could shoulder the load or stay healthy for a full season. This year, he s doing just that.
 +
 +
The Patriots are lucky to have Edelman on such a paltry contract this season. If this type of production keeps up, he ll be getting his own Amendola- or Welker-sized deal this offseason.

== Brush fires hit Central Jersey, Monmouth and Ocean counties ==
 +
 +
<html>OLD BRIDGE ? Brush fires swept through several areas in Central Jersey Sunday, with the largest blaze affecting more than 200 acres near Washington Avenue and Joseph Court.
 +
Residents in homes bordering the brush fire were evacuated, but they were allowed back into their homes in the mid-afternoon, said Lt. Joseph Napoli of the Old Bridge Police Department.
 +
The brush fire, which was first reported around 8 a.m. Sunday, was first said to be deep in the woods, but then spread to encroach upon the residential area, Napoli said.
 +
?The fire was spreading toward Washington Road in the Central Park development,? he said. ?We were evacuating as a precaution.?
 +
At 3:30 p.m., Napoli said the firefighters were continuing to fight the spread of the fire, but residential homes were no longer being threatened.
 +
?We have allowed the residents who were previously evacuated to return to their homes,? he said. ?The fire is contained to a wooded area right now.?
 +
Morristown Road and Route 34 were closed between Disbrow Road and Cottrell Road, police said.
 +
As the fire continued to spread, Napoli said that Cheesequake State Park had been evacuated and closed Sunday morning.
 +
?No homes have been damaged,? he said. ?But the fire in ongoing and still spreading.?
 +
According to a police monitoring service, state brush truck and helicopter support were called in to assist local first responders and the state Forest Fire Service. County task force teams from Monmouth and Mercer counties were also requested. Additionally, local engine support was requested to protect the homes.
 +
A red flag warning regarding brush fire risk was issued for most of New Jersey and was expected to last through early Sunday evening, the National Weather Service said.
 +
A red flag warning means that critical fire weather conditions are either occurring or will occur due to a combination of strong winds, low relative humidity and dry fuels.
 +
Any fires that develop may quickly get out of control and become difficult to contain. Winds may gust up to 40 mph,[http://swargaranischool.com/newjus_invcerm.html <em>Cheap Authentic New York Giants Jerseys For Sale</em>], the weather service said.
 +
(Page 2 of 2)<br>Jim Bunker, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Mount Holly,[http://lampit.in/product.html <em>Patriots Jerseys On Sale</em>], said Sunday?s strong winds and low humidity contributed to conditions suitable for brush fires.
 +
The drying effect on the atmosphere means the slightest spark from something as small as a cigarette butt could start a fire that quickly spreads, he said.
 +
On Saturday,[http://www.9jiaban.com/forum.php?mod=viewthread&tid=1155825&fromuid=109541 <span style="font-weight: bold">Chris Brown countersues 'heavily intoxicated' fan over defamatory assault claim</span>], several brush fires were reported in Central Jersey towns including Branchburg, East Windsor, Edison, Kingwood, Monroe and Old Bridge. On Sunday, Old Bridge, Tewksbury and Warren reported brush fires.
 +
A brush fire was reported on Gregory Lane at approximately 2 p.m. in Warren. A police dispatcher was able to confirm that the small fire was contained quickly and did not threaten any homes or buildings.
 +
In Ocean County, a minor brush fire ignited Sunday afternoon on Clairmont Avenue in Lakewood. However, it took just a few minutes to extinguish, Sgt. Frank Work said.
 +
Another brush fire was reported on Klockner Road in Hamilton Township, Mercer County at about 1 p.m.
 +
In Monmouth County,[http://lampit.in/product.html <em>Patriots Jerseys Sale</em>], firefighters worked for hours Saturday night to contain a large brush fire fueled by dry marshes and high winds in the Port Monmouth area.
 +
Several occupants of William Street were asked to leave their homes as the blaze threatened structures, but Police Sgt. Anthony Bagileo said the fire was mostly burning in the woods and weeds between William Street, Port Monmouth Road and Bray Avenue. Five homes were evacuated in total, John Isaksen, spokesman for the Middletown Township Fire Department, said in a news release Sunday.

Kennedy comes up big at the Hamilton Music Awards

<html>It was a great cap on a tough year for Hamilton blues musician Harrison Kennedy, who took home five Hamilton Music Awards Sunday night.

Kennedy, who was diagnosed with prostate cancer in December 2012, won in four categories — male artist of the year, blues recording of the year,Sally 'Sarah' Patterson

Sally 'Sarah' Patterson Sally 'Sarah' Patterson, songwriter of the year and best male vocalist — as well as being honoured with a special lifetime achievement award.

The four-time Juno-nominated musician got his start in 1968 when he joined Detroit band Chairmen of the Board and played Johnny Carson's Tonight Show, Soul Train, American Bandstand, England's Top of the Pops and Harlem's famous Apollo Theatre.

"Makes me feel so good," Kennedy sang as he took the stage to accept his first award of the evening (for best male artist). "Because I beat cancer this year folks," he said.

During his emotional acceptance speech for a lifetime achievement award, Kennedy thanked Hamilton for the role the city has played, not only in his musical career, but in the careers of so many of his fellow musicians. He ended on a light note, offering free advice to young musicians in the theatre - get paid.

Brott,Cheap Authentic New York Giants Jerseys For Sale, conductor and artistic director of the Brott Music Festival,Patriots Jerseys On Sale, received a standing ovation when he was called to the stage at Mohawk College's McIntyre Performing Arts Centre.

Between awards presentations, there were performances from Kennedy, Saint Alvia, best new artist Allotrope, female artist of the year Buckshot Bebee,Patriots Jerseys Sale, and Bud Roach, who won for classical recording of the year.

Vancouver bans door knobs

<html>The city of Vancouver has amended its building code to outlaw the use of those wrist-twisting devices in all new construction, including private homes. Door knobs had already been opener non grata in large buildings. The new ruling, effective in March, will not affect existing homes.

Instead of door knobs, new buildings will be equipped with easier-to-manoeuvre levers. The change is a victory for what's known as universal design,Patriots Jerseys Sale, creating spaces and buildings that are easily accessible for everyone.

"This is very progressive of Vancouver," says Howard Gerry, a professor specializing in universal design at Toronto's OCAD University. "It makes good sense, even for private houses. Think about an aging population or an individual carrying groceries or small children. Levers make access easier."

Some critics, however, see the knob ban as overkill. "No pun intended, but it seems heavyhanded," says Frank Garcea, vice-president of construction for Monarch Homes.

In Ontario,State lawmakers pass Internet privacy, 'revenge porn' bills, door knobs are a dying breed in public buildings. The Ontario Building Code stipulates that door openers must not require "tight grasping and twisting of the wrist" in all buildings except houses.

The Municipal Affairs and Housing Ministry held public consultations earlier this year about enhancing accessibility. No decisions have been made on how the code might be amended.

But is Vancouver's move just the beginning of the end? Is the door knob doomed?

"I say, good riddance. It never functioned well," explains Gerry. "I don't view it as a good piece of design."

"Perhaps it is doomed,Greg Tufaro's NJSIAA playoff first," adds June Komisar, associate professor of architecture at Ryerson University. Architecture students are now taught early on to design projects for universal access, she says.

The wave of the future is probably electronic entry, says Gerry. "Maybe we'll have tags under our skin so you get close to the door and it's geared to open," he suggests.

Still, the door knob has defenders. "I'm shocked to hear this," says Sam Mirshak, owner of the architectural antique shop, The Door Store, when told about the Vancouver ban. "I can see it for community buildings and institutions, but not homes.

"I have strong feelings about hardware. Door knobs are lovely. They're the jewelry of the door."

"I don't think it's doomed. Even in Vancouver,Cheap Authentic New York Giants Jerseys For Sale, they're not asking people to retrofit," says Joslyn confidently.

Builder Garcea isn't worried about the knob's residential future. "I've done lots of upgrades over the years," he says. "No one has ever asked me to delete all the door knobs."

But only antique knobs stir nostalgia, points out Gerry. "The contemporary ones are just round pieces of steel."

Levers now come in a range of designs,Patriots Jerseys On Sale, including options with an old-fashioned esthetic, he says. Some day people may collect antique levers, admiring the beautiful patina acquired through age and wear, he suggests.</html>

As show loses A

Fiery “Today” entertainment booker Melissa Lonner is on the way out, with sources telling Confidenti@l the morning show won’t bring her back when her contract expires at the end of the year.
Lonner,Bryant Park skating rink shooting suspect smiles as he's led, known for her intensity around the NBC offices, is said to be “notoriously aggressive” when it comes to booking A-listers and big musical acts, including Justin Bieber.
“She followed her own rules and treated publicists across the country like s—,” one source tells us. “She screams and yells and never calls anyone back.”
Her aggressive approach was apparently polarizing, but NBC honchos turned against her after ABC’s “Good Morning America” passed “Today” in the ratings last year and started landing bigger stars.

As “Today’s” top booker, Lonner is responsible for all entertainment-related guests, and produces the show’s Summer Concert Series, landing acts including One Direction,SEE IT- 3 adults, 4 children , Maroon 5, John Mayer and Michael Bublé.
Internally, the spin on her departure is that it was a mutual decision. But another source tells us that’s not the case, and that Lonner was “blindsided.”
But ultimately, it came down to the numbers — and the names.
“ ‘GMA’ were getting all the best guests,” says the source. “It is as simple as that. Once the ratings changed, people who were thought to be loyal to ‘Today’ followed. Melissa lacked the charm to win them back.”
Our source says the final straw was when Entertainment Weekly handed its “Frazier” reunion to “GMA” — even though “Frazier” was an NBC show.
An NBC exec insists,Cheap Authentic New York Giants Jerseys On Sale, “Melissa has a proven track record of booking A-list guests,” and a spokeswoman for the network denies all the allegations.
“While we don’t comment on personnel matters, this [story] is completely false,” the rep said.

British actress gives a dame about how her title is given.
DAME YANKEES!
Well, I’m be dame. Helen Mirren is not going to be addressed with anything other than her proper honorary title. A source tells us that at a Scripter Awards selection meeting at the University of Southern California, Mirren was quick to correct anyone who garbled her damehood.
“She was addressed as Dame Mirren and looked completely aghast,” says our source. “She corrected me and said, ‘It’s Dame Helen!’ ”

Reactions to the Jason Vargas signing

<html>As you most certainly know by now, the signed starting pitcher Jason Vargas to a four-year, $32 million contract on Thursday, making their first major splash of the offseason.

There's a number of ways to evaluate this contract and each one of them gives you a different opinion on how good of a deal this is for Kansas City. did a dollars-per-win evaluation, and thinks that Vargas has a good chance to provide $32 million over the life of his contract:

$32 million is paying for something like +5 WAR over the next four years, and even if we just project him for +2.0/+1.5/+1.0/+0.5, then we'd expect him to produce exactly +5 WAR over the life of this deal. This isn't a gross overpay. It's just transferring some of the cost of signing an average pitcher from 2014 to 2017.

I think Cameron makes some solid points in his article, and shows why many Royals fans don't flat out hate this move. It doesn't look like it will be a drastic overpay, and hopefully will not limit the team too much financially down the future.

doesn't understand why the Royals needed to spend four years on a pitcher like Vargas, who offers little upside (Subscription):

It makes the Royals a little better for now,Patriots Jerseys On Sale, but Vargas operates with such a slim margin for error that he could end up cannon fodder by the middle of the deal, especially if he loses another half-grade of velocity.

Vargas could be one of those guys who hangs on for awhile since he "knows how to pitch" and has consistent mechanics, so his loss of stuff won't impact him as much. Royals play-by-play annoucer/ hype man  attempted to present the argument on Twitter, so I'm sure you will hear it again.

Remember, tried to spare you!
Dan Szymborski (@DSzymborski)

Szymborski does think Vargas will outperform the projections, and he might with the help of Kauffman Stadium and a strong Royals defense. Still, it would be nice to see better projections from a player that will be expected to start every fifth day.

is waiting to completely judge the deal until we see what else the Royals do this offseason:

If this is the first of two or three moves, then I think it could be a nice setup for this team moving forward, but if he is the last of the rotation upgrades, the 2014 Royals are going to struggle to match what the 2013 Royals put up... I just think he's far too average for him to be the big addition to a rotation looking to compete for a division title in 2014. So yeah, the move itself is just average, but I don't think it does a good enough job of filling the Royals needs.

I completely understand Lesky's current fence-sitting. Vargas would be a nice upgrade over /, but there is a real fear that he is going to be expected to replace Ervin Santana. Especially when Kansas City Star beat writer Bob Dutton tweets out things like this:

Think he'll be No. 2 in rotation. Mr. Dutton, what are your thoughts on the Vargas signing?

Bob Dutton (@Royals_Report)

Dutton is just guessing, but he is about as connected to the Royals organization as they come, so his guesses should hold more weight than ours. Moore indicated in the press conference that the team is still searching for upgrades to the rotation, but also said that they would be comfortable with the pitchers the pitchers they have.

Unless you are really high on , and in 2014, there is no way you can expect the Royals to replace Santana's 2013 production with their current crop of starters. The defense should help,Cheap Authentic New York Giants Jerseys On Sale, but this team still needs to improve from last year, and Vargas at the number two is a clear dropoff.

I mean, the Royals are trying to actually reach the postseason in 2014, right? Unless something completely unexpected happens,Patriots Jerseys Sale, will be pitching for a new team in 2015, leaving the team without a clear top-of-the-rotation pitcher. The window for reaching the playoffs is now, and Vargas barely moves the needle in the correct direction.

Finally, the Vargas and contracts should show why it's so important,The earliest of early mock drafts- Rounds 7, especially for a team on a budget,Ohio State- Big Problem Surfaces for the Buckeyes, to develop young pitching. If Vargas does indeed break camp as the No. 2 starter, then the Royals will have spent around 1/3 of the team's budget in 2014 on the top three starters, and will receive 8 WAR at best. That's a pretty expensive investment without a whole lot of return.

Vargas' contract doesn't look terrible, but it's too long and leaves the Royals still searching for another top-end starter. If the team decides to make Vargas the No. 2 starer in 2014, this deal will probably end up looking worse.</html>

Julian Edelman Outshines Wes Welker, Danny Amendola in Patri

<html>Share this:

FOXBORO, Mass. There were three traditional slot receivers on the Gillette Stadium field on Sunday night, and only one of them eclipsed 100 yards, scored two touchdowns and pulled in nine receptions:?Julian Edelman.

After?Wes Welker?and?Danny Amendola?signed nearly identical contracts within hours of one another in March,?Julian Edelman?became an afterthought. All 32 NFL teams had a shot at the former college quarterback,Cheap Authentic New York Giants Jerseys On Sale, yet he was only able to get a one-year, $765,000 contract with no guaranteed money from the Patriots nearly a month after Welker and Amendola signed.

Edelman is already outproducing Amendola this season, and, after Sunday night s game, he s creeping up on Welker,Valerie Adams plans return to, too. Edelman had nine catches on 11 targets for 110 yards and two touchdowns. His biggest play was a 43-yarder where he wound up wide open after shaking Denver s defenders with a double move.

Welker finished with four catches and 31 yards on eight targets, getting shut down by?Kyle Arrington,Cheap Authentic New York Giants Jerseys For Sale, and Amendola finished with three catches on six targets for 17 yards.

If Brady wasn t so good in the second half, Edelman would have been the clear star of the game. And he was able to have such a great game despite getting limited fanfare all week in Welker s grand return to Foxboro.

Edelman deflected questions about his impact in the game (almost as well as he deflected passes as a defensive back in 2011), which also included 39 yards on three punt returns.

There s a reason Edelman goes so unheralded. He s a funny, charming personality if you look into the fifth-year player, but in speaking to the press, Edelman rarely shows that side. And he s never been the team s No. 1 option.

He s been so dependable and consistent all year for our team, Tom Brady said. Hes been the one veteran player on the offense whos been in there and been around. He did a great job. He always does a great job. Hes tough, smart and disciplined. Its fun to see him do well because he deserves it.

Some games Thompkins or Dobson will shine. And there have been games when Amendola has been the star, but Edelman keeps plugging along. And now he s got 61 receptions,Patriots Jerseys Sale, 610 yards and four touchdowns to show for it.

Julian did a great job, Bill Belichick?said. First of all, he did a good job of handling the ball, especially in the third and fourth quarter there. Made a couple good runs with the ball in his hands,Explore Long Island_3, also got open, caught the ball. The end route he got there gave us the field position in the overtime, it was a big play.

For years, Edelman showed this type of potential. And some argued going into the offseason that the Patriots didn t need to sign Welker or Amendola if they could lock up Edelman. But he had never proved he could shoulder the load or stay healthy for a full season. This year, he s doing just that.

The Patriots are lucky to have Edelman on such a paltry contract this season. If this type of production keeps up, he ll be getting his own Amendola- or Welker-sized deal this offseason.

Brush fires hit Central Jersey, Monmouth and Ocean counties

<html>OLD BRIDGE ? Brush fires swept through several areas in Central Jersey Sunday, with the largest blaze affecting more than 200 acres near Washington Avenue and Joseph Court. Residents in homes bordering the brush fire were evacuated, but they were allowed back into their homes in the mid-afternoon, said Lt. Joseph Napoli of the Old Bridge Police Department. The brush fire, which was first reported around 8 a.m. Sunday, was first said to be deep in the woods, but then spread to encroach upon the residential area, Napoli said. ?The fire was spreading toward Washington Road in the Central Park development,? he said. ?We were evacuating as a precaution.? At 3:30 p.m., Napoli said the firefighters were continuing to fight the spread of the fire, but residential homes were no longer being threatened. ?We have allowed the residents who were previously evacuated to return to their homes,? he said. ?The fire is contained to a wooded area right now.? Morristown Road and Route 34 were closed between Disbrow Road and Cottrell Road, police said. As the fire continued to spread, Napoli said that Cheesequake State Park had been evacuated and closed Sunday morning. ?No homes have been damaged,? he said. ?But the fire in ongoing and still spreading.? According to a police monitoring service, state brush truck and helicopter support were called in to assist local first responders and the state Forest Fire Service. County task force teams from Monmouth and Mercer counties were also requested. Additionally, local engine support was requested to protect the homes. A red flag warning regarding brush fire risk was issued for most of New Jersey and was expected to last through early Sunday evening, the National Weather Service said. A red flag warning means that critical fire weather conditions are either occurring or will occur due to a combination of strong winds, low relative humidity and dry fuels. Any fires that develop may quickly get out of control and become difficult to contain. Winds may gust up to 40 mph,Cheap Authentic New York Giants Jerseys For Sale, the weather service said. (Page 2 of 2)
Jim Bunker, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Mount Holly,Patriots Jerseys On Sale, said Sunday?s strong winds and low humidity contributed to conditions suitable for brush fires. The drying effect on the atmosphere means the slightest spark from something as small as a cigarette butt could start a fire that quickly spreads, he said. On Saturday,Chris Brown countersues 'heavily intoxicated' fan over defamatory assault claim, several brush fires were reported in Central Jersey towns including Branchburg, East Windsor, Edison, Kingwood, Monroe and Old Bridge. On Sunday, Old Bridge, Tewksbury and Warren reported brush fires. A brush fire was reported on Gregory Lane at approximately 2 p.m. in Warren. A police dispatcher was able to confirm that the small fire was contained quickly and did not threaten any homes or buildings. In Ocean County, a minor brush fire ignited Sunday afternoon on Clairmont Avenue in Lakewood. However, it took just a few minutes to extinguish, Sgt. Frank Work said. Another brush fire was reported on Klockner Road in Hamilton Township, Mercer County at about 1 p.m. In Monmouth County,Patriots Jerseys Sale, firefighters worked for hours Saturday night to contain a large brush fire fueled by dry marshes and high winds in the Port Monmouth area.
