On second thought, open scoring is probably a terrible idea
<html>In our ongoing quest to fix what we like to assume is a broken scoring system,cheap baseball jersey, I guess it only makes sense that eventually we’d seize on open scoring as a possible cure for what ails us.
This time it was the vs. bout at UFC 167 that got us talking about it. If only we’d heard the judges’ scores announced after every round, people said, we’d have known exactly what the stakes were heading into that fifth and final round. This, presumably,The Walking Dead GIF Recap & Discussion- Live Bait, would have made our lives better.
But no, those judges’ scorecards just had to stay hidden until the end of the Nov. 16 pay-per-view event. They just had to keep their scores a secret. And thus did our ignorance lead to outrage, all over again.
When you come at it from a purely theoretical standpoint, open scoring makes a lot of sense. Every other sport in the world tells you who’s winning before the match is over. Why not MMA? Why does it always have to be this tortured math problem where we add up effective strikes, subtract takedowns, multiply by “octagon control,Ben Carson Calls Congressional Black Caucus’ Refusal t,” then divide by the square root of Cecil Peoples? Wouldn’t fighters rather know whether they’re winning or losing before their chance to do something about it is gone?
I thought so, but a quick, informal poll of some active MMA fighters yielded very few willing to voice a full and unwavering support for open scoring. Most sided with UFC flyweight contender , who worried that it would alter the action too much if fighters knew exactly what the score was.
“I don’t like the way it can change the way someone fights,” Benavidez said. “I’ve seen it in boxing. Someone knows they’re up by five rounds and they can kind of hang back and not give it their all. Also, the guy that’s down, he has to change his style and maybe compromise a few things.”
UFC heavyweight agreed, saying that once a fighter knew for sure he was winning, he “would fight really cautious” down the stretch.
“With that being said,seattle seahawks uniforms,” Cormier added, “I always ask in between rounds whether or not I won the round, so I guess I do want to know.”
Still, just because a few fighters don’t like the idea is no reason to give up on it. After all, it’s not like you have to hear the scores out loud to know when one fighter is clearly up on the scorecards. We’ve seen plenty of final rounds between fighters who know they’re winning and those who know they’re losing, and sometimes that sense of certainty and/or desperation only makes things more exciting.
Think about all those times you’ve waited for the final round to start knowing that one fighter almost surely needs a knockout or a submission to win. Isn’t that still exciting? And if he gets the finish in that situation, isn’t it that much more dramatic?
But the real problems with open scoring were highlighted for me by Nevada State Athletic Commission Executive Director Keith Kizer, who said ?the NSAC, along with the Association of Boxing Commissions, had considered instituting it recently. As Kizer explained, there are two major concerns that steered them away from the idea.
One is the effect open scoring could have on the judges. Imagine an important fight for a hometown fighter in front of a highly partisan crowd. We could be talking about Newark, N.J., or Rio de Janeiro, but picture what would happen if, after three rounds of a five-round title fight, the scores are announced and the judges have it unanimously for the visiting fighter.
“First of all, you could have people throwing beer bottles and all that,” Kizer said. “Secondly, even if they don’t throw beer bottles, the judges �?and I’ve talked to some of them about this �?they’d be afraid. They’d be looking behind them during the next round. Then the rest of the fight after that, there’s the potential for the judges to be distracted.”
There’s also the potential for the judges to be influenced by hearing one another’s scores, Kizer said. If you’re a judge who scored the first four rounds for one fighter while your colleagues have it more evenly split, “There’s going to be some pressure on you to feel like you should give the fifth round to the other guy.”
The other concern is how it might affect fighters, and our perceptions of them. Forget about them playing it safe in the final round. Many of them already do that when they know they’re ahead, Kizer said, “But so what? They take a knee in football. It’s part of sports.”
The big problem is that combat sports such as MMA, boxing and kicking are among the only individual sports in which you can get injured late in the competition, find yourself unable to continue, yet still win.
“You’re leading Wimbledon or winning the Masters and you trip and break your ankle, you forfeit,” Kizer said.
It’s not so simple in MMA.
Say, for example, a champion is battering the challenger for the first three rounds of a title fight. Then in the fourth he runs out of gas, fades in the face of an onslaught from his opponent, and barely survives the round. Heading into the final round, we hear the scores announced. It’s 39-37 for the champion. At the start of the fifth, there’s an accidental clash of heads or an inadvertent eye poke. The champ says his vision is blurry. He can’t continue. Even if the judges score that incomplete round for the challenger, the champ still wins a technical decision. Now what are fans supposed to think?
“Either he’s telling the truth, but, you know, you and I won’t believe him,” Kizer said. “Or he isn’t telling the truth, and he managed to keep the belt because he knew he was ahead on the scorecards.”
That potential for abuse, along with the potential for judges to be distracted, might make open scoring a situation where “the cure would be worse than the disease,wholesale mlb jerseys,” according to Kizer.
“If those two things weren’t concerns, I’d love it,” Kizer said. “I’m not one of these people who thinks there’s something special in not knowing until the end.”
It’s almost as if, instead of making sure the scores are public knowledge throughout the fight, we should be more concerned with ensuring that the judging criteria are clearly understood going into it. Maybe the problem isn’t that we don’t know what the judges are thinking, but that we don’t always know why they’re thinking it.

Crocodiles are better known for their dangerousness than for any economic attribute. In the Ibo language, it is called ‘aguiyi,’ which, directly translated, means ‘sea lion.’ A fearsome carnivore, its sharp teeth is the veritable image of cutting acuity that is well exploited in advertising concepts. The crocodile is a totem figure for Kaduna, one of the most important cities in Northern Nigeria. Kaduna literally means ‘city of crocodiles.’ It was in this city that I first learnt about crocodile farming.
While my children were still in their primary school years, I often took them on long walks around the surrounding Gbagi villages. On one of such days, we went to a stream (actually a tributary of the Kaduna River) where we met the locals bathing and washing, with kids splashing around in the water.
Mingling with the people, I asked questions on things around that interested me, especially about an area where very dark looking water was flowing into the river. They said it was waste water from the activities of a company owned by some expatriates. They said that the grounds were so well guarded that no one was exactly sure of the number of business activities that went on in there. It was a large chunk of meat from the tail of a crocodile. A special meal of pepper soup and pounded yam was promptly prepared with the meat. I avoided both the meal and the pot with which it was cooked for a long time because crocodile meat has the pungent smell of seafood a reason why it is cherished in riverside parts, where it is a familiar delicacy. Smoked croc and alligator meat attracts good pricing in Nigerian bush meat markets. It is also priced by specialty restaurants that are known for indigenous African delicacies both at home and elsewhere. So, the crocodile farmer in Nigeria would not have difficulties selling the meat locally; even though it is said to be in demand in China, as a biocure for cancer; in Japan and other parts of Asia.
My third encounter with the crocodile idea came much later, providing an inspiration for this write-up. A few years ago, the National Research Institute for Chemical Technology, Zaria,[5], had commissioned my company to package a documentary on its activities. At the time, leather research was still part of their mandate. The assignment took us to the famous Kano dying pits, where we got clips of the artisanal tanners processing animal hides including crocodile skin.
However, one may ask the question, ‘why farm crocodiles when there is a preponderance of them in the creeks of Nigeria?’ Two main issues have made crocodile husbandry a compelling enterprise. First, in the years before the mid 70s, crocodiles had been hunted almost to extinction in many parts of the world because of its prized skin. Croc farming therefore emerged as a repopulation strategy that would also give the fashion world one of its most valuable materials for upscale products without upsetting the bionetwork. One crocodile can lay as many as 90 eggs; when hatched, the farmer can release some of the juveniles into the wilds to continue to expand crocodilian population.
Another reason for raising crocodiles in captivity is to ensure that the quality of the skin is protected from damage both from surfaces where the underbelly is dragged and from fights. Crocs are aggressive when stressed; leading to fights where they could sustain scratches that degrade the skins’ market value. Appropriate farm management and slaughter techniques are therefore deployed to enhance production of pristine skins.
Although croc husbandry can be challenging due to the infrastructural and safety demands, it is a viable venture that would rake in good returns,Softvent, even in foreign currency, for the adventurous. To the discerning farmer, a crocodile farm can be positioned to constitute an attractive tourists destination. A famous example is the Koorana Saltwater Crocodile Farms in Australia. This area can be incorporated into existing crocodile farmsteads in the country to increase revenue.

<html>Yes, the Good Guys finally lost last night after an 11-game win streak that lasted for 20 days. Even so, the Spurs are still tops in the West, have avoided the injury bug early on, and the team has played pretty solid ball through a sixth of the season. It's actually a remarkably fun time.
The beginning of this season has been tons of fun for Spurs fans. Their arrest came barely three weeks after some of their members were paraded at the Lagos State Police Command, where they confessed to have sold live human beings for N40,000, hands—N4,000 and head—N8,Nick Folk Jersey,000.

Gazali who hails from Folahan, Ado-Odo in Owode Yewa Local Government Area of Ogun State, further said: “I am an Islamic teacher and a cleric. I own an Islamic school in Owode Yewa. I am also married with eight children. I am also a native doctor. I cure people of their ailments and help those who want to get rich quick, by using human parts to prepare charms and concoctions for them.

“Most of the human parts I bought were sold to me by Kazeem Sanni. He used to sell dead human head between N3,000 and N8000, depending on the market price. The soft bones that can easily be grinded into powder are very cheap. It is just for N1,000. It is used to cure ailments like epilepsy.”
Asked why he did not use any of his children since he has eight of them, he said that would reduce the potency of the ritual concoction, adding that its potency depended solely on strangers being used. He said their victims were usually abducted from Lagos State and beyond, with the use of charms.
He further disclosed that aside the N40,000 paid to Sanni to get him a live human being, he gave him another N5,000 and a charm to hypnotize the male victims. But he said the plan almost failed as Sanni was almost caught. He, however, expressed regrets that despite the use of human parts to make other people rich, he ended up not only being poor but arrested along the line.
Money ritual charm changed my level
The second suspect, Alfa Taofeek, who is also an indigene of Owode Yewa in Ogun State confessed to have bought a human head from the third suspect, Kazeem, which he grinded and mixed with local gin.
According to him, “it was to enable me get rich. I am a Muslim cleric and I have been making people rich through this means but became jealous at a point and decided to get rich as well, since I was unable to get enough money from my clients.
“After drinking the concoction prepared with a human head, I got more customers and made more money. I even threw parties on a monthly basis to celebrate my new level.
“I also used part of the money to sponsor the graduation ceremony of some of my students in the Islamic school known as Alfa Taofeek Islamic School, at Owode Yewa.”
Customs officers lured me into money rituals
On his part, the third suspect, Kazeem Sanni, claimed to have opted for the money ritual business due to frustration from Customs men.
He said: “At a point, business was no longer moving because Customs men at the border were always seizing the goods, at the end of which their owners would force me to pay for them. I became frustrated even contemplated selling my father’s landed property. I decided to consult Alfa Taokeek Akinola to find out the cause of my predicament. He instructed me to get a human head in order to be rich. After that, he requested a live human being. I attempted kidnapping someone so that I can cut off his head but it was not possible. He then instructed me to exhume dead body from the graves which I did and got him three at the rate of N3,000 each.”
Their arrest, as explained by spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command, Ngozi Braide, was in compliance with the Commissioner of Police, Umar Manko’s directive to SARS Commander, Abba Kyari, to get the fleeing suspects, after the arrest of three members of the syndicate on May 15, 2013, with human parts.</html>

The Food and Agriculture Organisation has said? that farmers in the Central African Republic need urgent assistance to prevent food insecurity in the conflict-stricken country.

The organisation said FAO warned that the number would increase dramatically next year if farmers failed to prepare for the upcoming planting season.
The crop production has decreased sharply this year after civil conflict that broke out in the north-east of the country in December 2012 spread through the rest of the country.
Dominique Burgeon, the Director of FAO’s Emergency and Rehabilitation Division, said that an estimated 500,000 people had fled their homes in fear, and many farmers had not been able to access their fields.
“Seeds have been in short supply due to looting and because people have had to eat them instead of saving them for planting
“Desperate farmers have been selling tools and livestock so that they can feed their families, which had left them without means of making an income; raids on livestock and agricultural equipment have been widespread,” he added.
According to FAO’s Global Information and Early Warning System, a further decrease in agricultural output will severely undermine the country’s economy.
Agricultural exports that are some of the country’s main sources of foreign exchange earnings have dropped sharply this year, especially timber, cotton and coffee.
According to the FAO Regional Representative for Africa, Mr Bukar Tijani, food prices in the country are high and unstable due to severe market disruption.
Tijani added that maize prices rose to 31 per cent between January and November in Bangui, while millet prices increased by 70 per cent between March and October in Ouham province, an important sorghum and millet producing area in the northwest.
“Due to the challenges in reaching affected farming families, work must begin now to help them get ready for the 2014 planting seasons.
