Allen has Sotos Syndrome, characterized by excessive growth in early childhood. (Adam Wesley/The Gazette-KCRG TV9) | ||
| + | |||
| + | | ||
| + | |||
| + | CEDAR RAPIDS — Though she’s 7 years old and learned how to, Carly Allen hasn’t ridden a bike, independently, for two years. | ||
| + | |||
| + | She can sit in the seat and hold on to the handles as her mom, Lisa,<strong>[http://symbiosisnetwork.com/showJobDetails.html basketball jerseys cheap]</strong>, pushes her around the yard. But that’s not the same. | ||
| + | |||
| + | Carly has Sotos syndrome, a rare genetic disorder. Characterized by excessive growth early in life, the condition also results delayed motor development and low muscle tone among other symptoms, which make riding a traditional bike impossible for her. | ||
| + | |||
| + | Though Carly and her family now know what is behind varying symptoms, arriving at the diagnosis took years and bit of detective work. | ||
| + | |||
| + | Carly was born four weeks premature. She weighed 10 pounds. | ||
| + | |||
| + | At five weeks old, she was referred to Mayo Clinic, where she was diagnosed with a heart defect and an overly narrow anal canal. She had three surgeries to correct those issues, but Lisa says she could tell something still wasn’t right with her daughter. | ||
| + | |||
| + | “Every year, she would grow 4 to 6 inches,” Lisa says. | ||
| + | |||
| + | People said she was growing so fast because she was a preemie. But Lisa says there were other clues that something was different with her middle child. | ||
| + | |||
| + | “Her teeth started to rot, she has an awkward gait — she just couldn’t walk straight — and she had to have tubes put in her ears,” Lisa says. “Every year,[http://www.alicom.com.br/wikicom/index.php/Usu%C3%A1rio:Jeaxfrnl9#Is_Philip_Rivers_ready_for_the_Cowboys_defense- Is Philip Rivers ready for the Cowboys defense-], there was something and she continued to grow.” | ||
| + | |||
| + | Years of doctor appointments, therapy sessions, hospital stays and medical tests, including an MRI, finally resulted in a diagnosis earlier this year. Lisa says she reached for her computer moments after doctors told her Carly may have Sotos syndrome, which affects 1 in 10,000 to 14,000 newborns. | ||
| + | |||
| + | “The first picture that appeared on the screen, I said ‘That’s Carly,’” Lisa remembers. “Out of 81 characteristics, she has 30.” | ||
| + | |||
| + | Sotos isn’t life-threatening. Carly will have a normal life expectancy. She will continue to grow at an increased rate until puberty. Carly is expected to be more than 6 feet tall when she stops growing. | ||
| + | |||
| + | The initial abnormalities of Sotos — delayed motor, cognitive and social development; low muscle tone; and speech impairments — should resolve as Carly ages. | ||
| + | |||
| + | That’s years from now, though. Now all she wants to do is ride a bike with her older sister, Raeann. | ||
| + | |||
| + | “We’ve exhausted bubbles and sidewalk chalk as outdoor entertainment,” Lisa Allen says. | ||
| + | |||
| + | “Right now, she just watches a lot,” Raeann, 9, says. | ||
| + | |||
| + | An adapted bike, which resembles an adult-sized tricycle with each wheel the same size, would allow her to join in. | ||
| + | |||
| + | Northtowne Cycling and Fitness has one in stock and Lisa says they will service the bike and fit it to Carly as she continues to grow. The price tag of $600,[http://www.ilaoshan.cn/i/forum.php?mod=viewthread&tid=877718 JACKSON- BILL MINOR- Shots stir 70], however, is more than Lisa can afford. | ||
| + | |||
| + | “We started calling around and we decided to put together a huge fundraiser so we can buy the bike,” Raeann says. | ||
| + | |||
| + | The fundraiser will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. on Monday,<strong>[http://kathakalinews.com/wholesale-nfl-jerseys-cheap.html wholesale authentic nfl jerseys]</strong>, Sept, 23, at Pizza Ranch, 2450 Westdale Dr. SW. | ||
| + | |||
| + | Pizza Ranch will donate 15 percent of a customer’s bill to Carly’s bike fund if they bring in a fundraiser flyer. Flyers are available at Hiawatha Elementary School, where Carly is in first grade. | ||
| + | |||
| + | Team Carly volunteers will bus tables on Monday and all tips will go to the fund. Donation jars also will be at the restaurant. | ||
| + | |||
| + | “I think it’s going to be nice that she’s finally going to get a bike,” Raeann says. | ||
| + | |||
| + | When asked what color of bike she’d like, Carly whispers “Green.” | ||
| + | |||
| + | Lisa says she’s overwhelmed by the support of the community, including everyone at Hiawatha Elementary. | ||
| + | |||
| + | “I’m thrilled that she may be able to get back on a bike this year, but it’s also really good that we’re getting the word out about Sotos because it’s so rare,” Lisa says. “We talk a lot about this at home. We don’t need people to feel sorry for Carly. We just need them to understand.”</html> | ||

Digital Photography- Top 100 Simplified Tips & Tricks (T
<html>Like other excellent titles in Wiley's Visual series, Rob Sheppard's book on digital photography is well organized and makes extremely good use of photos to illustrate techniques described in the text. In some ways, the title of the book may do it a disservice: don't think that you will only get 100 tips; there are tips and tricks lodged within the 100 labeled tips. Also, the book provides sound advice for taking better photos, be they digital or not.
In this book I saw great explanations of fundamental photographic information such as WHAT METERS REALLY DO (Tip 22) -- and why it really is important to understand. In the past I've often drawn blank stares when I've tried to explain this topic, and Sheppard (with the help of some great photos) does it simply and succinctly in a way that most people would be able to grasp. In similar manner, more advanced topics are handled such that photographers are encouraged to stretch their abilities to new levels.
Readers who like to flip open a book in random places will really enjoy Digital Photography: Top 100 Simplified Tips and Tricks, 3rd Edition, as it is definitely not necessary to read through methodically starting at page one. You can just crack open the book, pick a tip,Picture Perfect Photos Are Within Your Reach With These Hand

Picture Perfect Photos Are Within Your Reach With These Hand
Picture Perfect Photos Are Within Your Reach With These Hand, any tip, and give it a try the next time you are out with a camera or sitting at a computer with some photo files to play with.
As is customary in Wiley's Visual series,Wholesale Green Bay Packers Hats, each tip is assigned a Difficulty Level so the readers has some ideas of what they are getting into. The book covers a broad range of topics beyond the fundamentals of taking good photos. While not getting too deep into the fine points, space is devoted to basic digital editing for taking advantage of photo-improvement techniques that were unavailable when darkrooms were full of nasty chemicals. That said, this isn't a book of advanced photo-editing techniques using Photoshop CS3, but it does a dandy job of demonstrating some of the amazing improvements that can be made using Photoshop Elements.
Sheppard gets bonus points for not assuming that everyone uses a PC; key combinations are given for Macs as well as PCs. Just because Mac users are substantially smarter than a typical shoulder roast and can usually translate instructions given for PCs, it is nice that we are not taken for granted as happens in many books on digital editing.
Maybe after taking some great photos and then doing some digital editing to bring out their strong points and minimize any flaws, readers will want to explore some of the many ways that they can make use of their images. Sheppard doesn't let them down here either,Green Bay Packers Jersey, as several Tips and Tricks are devoted to various ways of sharing photos on the web, DVDs, and in print.
If this book isn't worth the price of ten cups of java, I don't know what is. It adroitly covers many of the issues involved with the taking, improving, and use of digital photos and does so in ways that are accessible to readers of varied skill levels. It is hard to give a comprehensive review of such a wide ranging book, but I'm quite certain that many people will part with about twenty bucks if they visit a bookstore and flip through the pages. And most of these people will shortly find themselves understanding something that was fuzzy in the past, or trying new ways of taking photos, or getting a little bolder with their digital editing, or trying new ways of sharing their photos. If so, buying and working through Digital Photography: Top 100 Simplified Tips and Tricks, 3rd Edition will have been money well spent.

Sunday night's Emmy Awards did itself no favors by going up against the second-to-last episode of "Breaking Bad," the acclaimed show that won the night's outstanding drama series award.
Those who chose to forgo catching up with Walter White's meth-filled world to watch the television industry celebrate itself didn't find nearly the drama they'd have found over on AMC. But they did find an equally puzzling land, where some decisions made perfect sense, and others seemed about as well-thought-out as ditching your teaching career for a horrific ride through the land of illegal drugs.
Rewind the DVR with us as we take another look at what made sense and what didn't.
Made sense: Neil Patrick Harris' selection as host. Who doesn't love Doogie/Barney, who can play off the ridiculous and the vapid with ease?

California enacts law to protect celebrities' children f
California enacts law to protect celebrities' children f, center, with Nathan Filion and Sarah Silverman, is a beloved awards show host who was misused at the Emmys Sunday night. Didn't make sense:?The poor use of Harris,basketball jerseys cheap, who began with an excruciatingly boring setup where he imagined TV shows were talking to him, then took the stage to be harangued by former hosts of the show. His middle-of-the-show song-and-dance number was fun, but he was wasted again in a weirdly interpretative dance number of the year's best drama nominees. Did a frustrated dance major decide to present this via the nominees for best choreography? Does the world really need to see two Hazmat-suited men dancing with "Breaking Bad"-shaped periodic table element cubes??
Made sense: The two people at the Emmys with perhaps as much stored public goodwill as Harris were Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, who were the two highlights of that opening segment. Their goofball antics chomping popcorn, wearing 3-D glasses and urging Harris to twerk were typical Fey and Poehler gold.
Didn't make sense: Fey and Poehler were there, they seemed game why not use them more? Even their clowning pratfall as they climbed the stage stairs in heels was more entertaining than most of Harris' lines.
Mike Blake / Reuters Is this the end? We hope not. Tina Fey and Amy Poehler take a funny tumble on the way to the stage at the Primetime Emmys. Made sense: It was a tough year for Hollywood James Gandolfini, Annette Funicello, Larry Hagman, Jean Stapleton and so many other iconic faces were lost to death. So it was only logical that the Emmys would want to honor its past and draw attention to the great actors, directors and others who passed away.
Didn't make sense: But not this way. Only a few people Gandolfini,4.12 wholesale nfl jerseys china, Stapleton, Jonathan Winters, writer Gary David Goldberg, "Glee" star Cory Monteith were given individual tributes. And those tributes were delivered though lovingly by friends in stiff, book-report style. Wouldn't our fond memories of these legends have been better served by brief clip reels in which we saw the stars actually acting, making us laugh or cry, as they did on-screen? What would've garnered more smiles and applause, Rob Reiner remembering his TV mother-in-law, or sweet Stapleton admonishing "Aww-chee" in that way only Edith Bunker could?
Made sense: The new love for Netflix, the network that doesn't even show its programming on television but still earned 14 nominations, felt proper and timely. Netflix is blazing trails with shows such as "House of Cards" and "Hemlock Grove," and the Emmys were quick to recognize this new serious player.
Mike Blake / Reuters Can we talk? "House of Cards" star Kevin Spacey performs a cutaway scene during the opening act at the Primetime Emmy Awards. Didn't make sense: That said, only "House of Cards" won anything, claiming a directing Emmy for David Fincher and two Creative Arts Emmys, one for cinematography and one for casting. Kevin Spacey about stole Harris' opening bit when he broke the fourth wall by turning to the audience, as his congressman character does on "Cards," and bragging about how the skit was all his plot to bring Harris down. Keyser Soze's still got it.
Made sense: It would've been a crime along the lines of anything Walter White perpetrated had "Breaking Bad" been ignored in this, its final season. No program has been talked about more, no program has been more ground-breaking in recent weeks. The show deserved its best drama Emmy and it was nice, too, to see overlooked Anna Gunn, who shines weekly as poor Skylar, win for best supporting actress.
Didn't make sense: But then Cranston loses to Jeff Daniels for "The Newsroom"? And Aaron Paul to Bobby Cannavale of "Boardwalk Empire"? Not taking anything away from their work, but it seems hard to grasp exactly why Daniels and Cannavale were the better choices this year.
Made sense: Bob Newhart making a too-brief appearance he's still got that smile,Balat, PDP Chieftain Berates Buhari, el

Arizona Cardinals- What we know after week 3
<html>Three weeks of the NFL 2013 season are in the books already, with the sporting a 1-2 record. Sure, a 1-2 record after three games sounds pitiful at best, but let's take some reference points.
At 1-2 the Cardinals are tied for second in the division with the and the .
The Cards are operating under new management on both sides of the ball as well as at the GM position.
Continuing with the new theme, operating under center is a shiny and new to the team QB option in Carson Palmer. Palmer is just one of the many new names on a team that went through a massive roster overhaul.
Sure sure, new this and new that. How's that translate past the 1-2 record?
Well, after watching this new team for three weeks it appears all the newness to the team hasn't succeeded into making them a better team. The offense seems like a good place to start the breakdown.
Bruce Arians was highly regarded as the hottest HC candidate on the market for the work he did as interim HC for the as well as for his offensive play-calling schemes. Looking at the first two games under his belt I felt that the play-calling was balanced and led to many mismatches and opportunities. Then Arians drank the Dr. Whiz juice in the third game and went away from a successful run game to air the ball out. - Verdict: Prescription medicine for bipolar
Keeping with the offense, let's speak on Levi Brown who missed last most of last season due to injury. Arians called him elite. Many post here and across the web noted that the offensive line would have to get better with the return of Levi Brown. Three weeks in and talk has changed. While I never believed Brown has the physical tools to be a left tackle, visual proof is once again on tape from the 2013 season.
Defensively Bruce Arians brought in his choice for DC, Todd Bowles. As I thought of Russ Grimm last year,Abuja SSS, Boko Haram Clash- Atiku Calls For Independent In

That's an average of 26 points a game. Bowles schemes are mismatched by offensive coordinators,4.12 cheap jerseys free shipping, with the defensive front seven failing to apply constant pressure.
However, not all is bleak. 3rd round pick is well on his way to defensive rookie of the year awards as he continually flashes big plays in each game.
So what have we learned about the Cardinals? That they've improved, somewhat. Those improvements though are only good enough to provide frustration as the team competes but doesn't really win many. There are too many places that require improvement before they enter the arena of competition, which might be the case in 2014.

Back on the bike
<html>Carly Allen, 7, sits on the tire swing at Hiawatha Elementary School on Wednesday,wholesale nfl jerseys china, September, 18, 2013 in Hiawatha, Iowa. Allen has Sotos Syndrome, characterized by excessive growth in early childhood. (Adam Wesley/The Gazette-KCRG TV9)
CEDAR RAPIDS — Though she’s 7 years old and learned how to, Carly Allen hasn’t ridden a bike, independently, for two years.
She can sit in the seat and hold on to the handles as her mom, Lisa,basketball jerseys cheap, pushes her around the yard. But that’s not the same.
Carly has Sotos syndrome, a rare genetic disorder. Characterized by excessive growth early in life, the condition also results delayed motor development and low muscle tone among other symptoms, which make riding a traditional bike impossible for her.
Though Carly and her family now know what is behind varying symptoms, arriving at the diagnosis took years and bit of detective work.
Carly was born four weeks premature. She weighed 10 pounds.
At five weeks old, she was referred to Mayo Clinic, where she was diagnosed with a heart defect and an overly narrow anal canal. She had three surgeries to correct those issues, but Lisa says she could tell something still wasn’t right with her daughter.
“Every year, she would grow 4 to 6 inches,” Lisa says.
People said she was growing so fast because she was a preemie. But Lisa says there were other clues that something was different with her middle child.
“Her teeth started to rot, she has an awkward gait — she just couldn’t walk straight — and she had to have tubes put in her ears,” Lisa says. “Every year,Is Philip Rivers ready for the Cowboys defense-, there was something and she continued to grow.”
Years of doctor appointments, therapy sessions, hospital stays and medical tests, including an MRI, finally resulted in a diagnosis earlier this year. Lisa says she reached for her computer moments after doctors told her Carly may have Sotos syndrome, which affects 1 in 10,000 to 14,000 newborns.
“The first picture that appeared on the screen, I said ‘That’s Carly,’” Lisa remembers. “Out of 81 characteristics, she has 30.”
Sotos isn’t life-threatening. Carly will have a normal life expectancy. She will continue to grow at an increased rate until puberty. Carly is expected to be more than 6 feet tall when she stops growing.
The initial abnormalities of Sotos — delayed motor, cognitive and social development; low muscle tone; and speech impairments — should resolve as Carly ages.
That’s years from now, though. Now all she wants to do is ride a bike with her older sister, Raeann.
“We’ve exhausted bubbles and sidewalk chalk as outdoor entertainment,” Lisa Allen says.
“Right now, she just watches a lot,” Raeann, 9, says.
An adapted bike, which resembles an adult-sized tricycle with each wheel the same size, would allow her to join in.
Northtowne Cycling and Fitness has one in stock and Lisa says they will service the bike and fit it to Carly as she continues to grow. The price tag of $600,JACKSON- BILL MINOR- Shots stir 70, however, is more than Lisa can afford.
“We started calling around and we decided to put together a huge fundraiser so we can buy the bike,” Raeann says.
The fundraiser will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. on Monday,wholesale authentic nfl jerseys, Sept, 23, at Pizza Ranch, 2450 Westdale Dr. SW.

Team Carly volunteers will bus tables on Monday and all tips will go to the fund. Donation jars also will be at the restaurant.
“I think it’s going to be nice that she’s finally going to get a bike,” Raeann says.
When asked what color of bike she’d like, Carly whispers “Green.”
Lisa says she’s overwhelmed by the support of the community, including everyone at Hiawatha Elementary.
“I’m thrilled that she may be able to get back on a bike this year, but it’s also really good that we’re getting the word out about Sotos because it’s so rare,” Lisa says. “We talk a lot about this at home. We don’t need people to feel sorry for Carly. We just need them to understand.”</html>
