Grantham shrugs off concerns about the secondary 0

<html>ATHENS - Todd Grantham is not worried about his secondary. No really, he's not. Really.Georgia's defensive backs have been racked by injuries and several potential starters missed Wednesday night's final scrimmage of the preseason. But Grantham, the defensive coordinator in charge of stopping Clemson, or at least holding the Tigers in check, said the secondary situation isn't keeping him up at night."Nah. Hey, we've got the guys we've got, and I think the guys that played last night did a good job," Grantham said. "I think they're pretty conscientious. They've just gotta understand the gameplan and understand where their help is, and just gotta keep working."Free safety Tray Matthews looms as perhaps the key player who needs to return. The freshman has been out this week with a hamstring injury, but Grantham shrugged off a question about when Matthews would return to practice. But he shrugged it off, with a hint of optimism. "All I go is by the day, and today everybody was getting a little bit better. We're gonna practice on Friday and Saturday, and hopefully we can get some reps for those guys to start preparing for Clemson," Grantham said.Strong safety Corey Moore has been out for awhile with a knee sprain, and strong safety Shaquille Fluker has been ill and missed practice this week. That compounds the problem created by sophomore Josh Harvey-Clemons, the first-team strong safety in the base defense,New Survivor Cast- Blood vs. Water CBS Denver_3, being suspended for the opener. Projected starting cornerback Sheldon Dawson did not play in the practice game with a sprained shoulder, but he was no longer on the injury report Thursday. The players who are healthy have played well, according to Grantham, particularly freshmen cornerbacks Brendan Langley and Shaq Wiggins. "We got some guys back last night. Shaq (Wiggins) practiced, and had an interception, did some nice things. I think those guys are continuing to get healthy, and we'll just continue to treat them, and get them out there when we can,This week in Knicks and the entertainment industry_2," Grantham said. "I think Langley's done a great job. He's been serious about learning our system since really we signed him in February. He's taken ownership in trying to learn the defense."On another note,Psychic fraud trial- Testimony continues in trial of fortune teller Rose Marks, there apparently isn't a decision in the battle between James DeLoach and Leonard Floyd to start at outside linebacker. Grantham indicated that both will play a lot of snaps, and their performance will dictate what happens going forward.Defensive line update: Bailey emerges againDefensive line coach Chris Wilson said he feels comfortable with six players right now, though he didn't want to say who comprises those six. Senior defensive end Garrison Smith remains the player who has most separated himself from the rest, which isn't surprising given he's the only returning starter. But Wilson did single out another player: Sterling Bailey,New Home Sales Drop Sharply, who finished the spring as the first-team defensive end, but has had a quieter preseason. "Sterling Bailey has done some things that have helped his cause,Video- Anderson Varejao’s life, illustrated," Wilson said. "We'll obviously be preparing him till we kick the ball off. So that's the thing, you've gotta see the guys - everybody likes to play. We've gotta find guys that like to win. That's kind of what we're developing right now.""Now we're finally starting the gameplan phase of Clemson, and so now you're trying to marry up your players with the gameplan, and create the matchups you need for Clemson. I like the six guys I've got. I haven't really settled on a guy because we haven't settled on a gameplan as of yet. But as that gets closer and closer we'll be closer to knowing who the six or seven guys hopefully who we'll go win the game with."

Marcellus Shale waste trips more radioactivity alarms than o

<html>Last year, nearly 1,Citizens awards contract for new insurance clearinghouse,000 trucks hauling 15,769 tons of Marcellus Shale waste were stopped at Pennsylvania landfill gates after tripping radioactivity alarms. The trucks were pulled to the side, wanded with hand-held detectors and some of the material was sent to laboratories for further evaluation. In the end, 622 tons were shipped to three out-of-state landfills specifically designed to dispose of hazardous and radioactive materials. But most of the flagged waste was eventually allowed past the gates. It was safe enough to be buried along with other waste as long as it stays below the annual limit, the Department of Environmental Protection and landfill operators deemed. The increase in radiation alarms going off at landfills has mirrored the growth in Marcellus Shale activity, and the DEP has launched a yearlong study of radioactive Marcellus waste to determine any risks involved in its transportation or disposal.PG graphic:Marcellus Shale waste at Pa. landfills
(Click image for larger version)The agency s bureau of waste management also has formed a working group and charged it with developing protocol for tracking rejected loads, for telling gas operators how to characterize the waste, for developing waste acceptance criteria for landfills, and for clarifying how well sites and waste treatment plants should handle residual waste. So far, neither the DEP nor the landfill owners are alarmed. To put it into perspective, the alarms flagged only 1 percent of all landfill-bound Marcellus waste last year, according to state figures. Shale gas operators reported sending just under 1 million tons of waste to Pennsylvania landfills in 2012. The majority of that was drill cuttings -- chunks of earth pulled out of the well during the drilling process -- but there was also flow-back water, frack sand and other fluids that were turned into sludge for disposal. It s these sludges that experts say are most likely contributing to elevated radiation counts. The radioactive material in Marcellus waste is naturally occurring. It s mostly radium,The best kind of home improvements- high, a product of uranium decay, and it has been underground for millions of years in the Marcellus formation. Dredging earth and gas out of the ground brings up the radioactive elements.Since 2002, all Pennsylvania landfills have been outfitted with radiation detectors following concerns about medical waste ending up in the municipal waste stream. All trucks arriving at the facilities pass through a gate topped with a sensor that takes a reading inches away from the top of the truck.According to the DEP, Marcellus sludge is three times more likely to trip alarms than solid shale waste. Last year, 224 loads of drill cuttings elicited alarms at landfills, while 773 loads of sludge did the same. So far this year, 211 loads of sludge and 124 loads of drill cuttings tripped alarms, the DEP said. But the number of times an alarm is tripped doesn t tell the whole story.Landfill sensors are particularly sensitive and able to detect even small levels of radioactivity, said Erika Deyarmin, a spokeswoman for Waste Management Corp., which operates 17 commercial landfills in Pennsylvania.Usually, if a load is really radioactive, it never makes it to a landfill because the oil and gas company or wastewater treatment plant that first scans that waste at their site knows it will be rejected,Heating up- Klamath Basin geothermal project keeps getting w, she said. In such cases, the company must come up with another disposal option. The increase in radioactivity at landfills may be a product of how Marcellus waste treatment has changed over the last few years. In 2011, radioactivity concerns centered around water. Back then, oil and gas companies were still taking their waste to municipal wastewater treatment plants and to commercial plants that were discharging into the state s waters. In the summer of 2011, the DEP collected and analyzed sediment from the PA Brine wastewater treatment plant in Indiana County and found levels of radium 226 in the discharge pipe that was 44 times the drinking water standard. Twenty meters downstream of the discharge point, levels were still 66 percent above the standard.Similar results were found at several other facilities, as revealed in a settlement between the Environmental Protection Agency and the company earlier this year.In April 2011, the PA Brine plant and all such plants in the state had been told not to accept Marcellus wastewater, but the radioactive elements found in PA Brine s soil were remnants of prior discharges.Kelvin Gregory, an assistant professor at Carnegie Mellon University who works on Marcellus water issues, said the peak of radioactivity in wastewater comes after the initial gush of flow-back water comes to the surface after fracking. Radium concentrations are highest in produced water, a term that describes the brine that continues to flow out of the well for long periods of time after that well starts producing gas.In a survey of flow-back and produced water at 46 Marcellus sites, Mr. Gregory found radioactivity increases for two months on average, then he saw plateaus.Whether the level stays at that high concentration forever or tapers off at some point isn t yet clear, Mr. Gregory said. The wells haven t been producing long enough to tell.Examples of highly radioactive waste from the Marcellus are rare so far."The cases where we get a very hot load are very few and far between," said John Poister, a spokesman for the DEP s southwestern district. But every once in awhile, it happens. In April, a truckload from Rice Energy arrived at Max Environmental s Yukon Landfill in Westmoreland County and set off the alarm. The waste was deemed too radioactive. The company shopped it around to a few landfills, but no one would take it, Mr. Poister said. Eventually, the truck went back to the source while arrangements were made to transport the waste to a specialized disposal site in Idaho. Why was Rice s load so much hotter than others?"That s a question for the [DEP] study," Mr. Poister said."We ve taken quite a bit of drill cuttings at our Yukon facility this year, and only one truck triggered the radiation alarm," said Carl Spadaro, environmental general manager of the Yukon landfill. "Other landfills have had alarms triggered quite a bit."Yukon accepts about 90,000 tons of waste annually and just last month amended its permit to be able to accept waste that trips radiation alarms."We didn t do this to bring in a lot of [radioactive] waste,Best Book Clubs In Washington DC CBS DC_1," Mr. Spadaro said. "We did this to level the playing field."Yukon competes with two other landfills within a 5-mile radius."The biggest concern is exposure of a landfill worker during unloading and somebody who s handling material,Seahawks vs. Packers- Preseason Week 3 Coverage_0," Mr. Spadaro said. The exposure level allowed at Pennsylvania landfills is a quarter of the EPA s public radiation dose limit of 100 millirem per year."This is equivalent to about two chest X-rays," said Kevin Sunday, a former spokesman for the DEP.</html>

Ned Rozell- 50 years of coverning science issues in Alaska

<html>While waiting for the talking to begin in darkened auditoriums, I sometimes scan the room, counting heads. "I've interviewed him,Jesse Jackson Says Blacks 'More Equal, Less F, and her,New Tylenol cap will have warning label, and him. And her."At last week's dedication of the Institute of Arctic Biology's lovely new building on the University of Alaska Fairbanks campus, I saw more than a dozen people who have appeared in this space since fall 1994 (when I took over this column from Carla Helfferich).I've written a lot of words about these biologists because we still know so little about far-north creatures and how they survive here, and Institute of Arctic Biology people have discovered things we did not know. One example is where chickadees roost during winter (often in tiny holes in birch trees, Susan Sharbaugh found). Another is that our rugged version of Alaska wood frogs can survive colder temperatures than Lower 48 wood frogs, which live as far south as Georgia (Brian Barnes and his physiology class uncovered that one).Barnes, who also discovered that Toolik Lake ground squirrels' body temperatures sometimes dip below 32 degrees Fahrenheit (getting the ground squirrel on the cover of Science magazine), is the director of the institute. As part of the 50th anniversary celebration of that organization, Barnes challenged 24 current and former researchers to sum up their research in just 15 minutes of stage time.Their lectures, executed rapid-fire in the spotless new auditorium of the Margaret Murie Building, were a lively combination of history, stories about getting caught in offices with disobedient dogs,Small Town Considers Whether To Issue Drone_0, and nice little news bites. Here are a few of the latter: Black spruce trees came into Alaska about 6,500 years ago, when it was cooler and wetter, said plant ecologist Roger Ruess. Wildfires followed the black spruce into the territory. Because interior Alaska is changing as fast as any place on Earth, hardwoods are shouldering out black spruce. Kittiwakes, true "sea gulls" with handsome black wing tips, nest in large colonies in bluffs near the ocean. Every four-to-five years, often after cold springs, chick survival in colonies is zero, said ornithologist Ed Murphy, who studied the birds for years on the western Alaska coast. The acreage burned in western North America has doubled in the last 40 years, said ecologist Terry Chapin. If current warming continues, in 50 years Fairbanks will have a climate similar to Saskatoon. "UAF will have the highest predictable (climate) changes of any university," he said. Wolf-control programs could lead to more coyotes eating lambs, said ecologist Laura Prugh. She studies coyote predation on Dall sheep and has found that when snowshoe hare numbers are up, so are coyotes, and more coyotes eat more lambs. Wolf-control could cause "coyote release" (less wolves mean more coyotes,Season of note unveiled for Live Arts Maryland, which wolves kill). She also pointed out the state of Alaska practices wolf control in an area larger than the state of Washington. Using a snippet of hair, nutritional ecologist Diane O'Brien, using stable-isotope analysis, can determine your approximate intake of sugar-sweetened drinks. Her methods are useful in the studies of what coastal Alaska Natives eat as they combine a traditional diet rich in foods from the ocean and store-bought foods that are almost never from Alaska. Now director of the UA Press, former "microbiologist in a world of macrobiologists" Joan Braddock said one of her most satisfying moments was when U.S. Geological Survey workers used her prescription that enabled oil-eating microbes to clean up a fouled site in Barrow. "After two months of using our fertilizing and tilling recommendations, the contaminant was cleaned up." After studying the largest tundra fire in recent memory -- the 2007 Anaktuvuk River Fire -- ecologist Donie Bret-Harte has found that the site is greening at a surprising clip. "The tundra's clearly recovering much faster than we expected," she said. "This fire is not the big disaster people thought it would be."Since the late 1970s,Is The Play Calling Really Making A Difference For The Cowboys-_0, the University of Alaska Fairbanks' Geophysical Institute has provided this column free in cooperation with the UAF research community. Five Life Lessons I've Learned From Pokémon

Brittany Vincent 27,044g I’ve grown up — rather fondly, I might add — with Pokémon. Over the years the several different hundreds of pocket monsters have become my dear friends. Simply settling into a new game (like I’ve recently done with Black) is a comfort to me. In a tumultuous, changing world, I find solace in the fact that while the games have metamorphosed over the years, whittling down a health bar or throwing a Poké Ball haven’t changed. When so many things I can’t control refuse to stay the same, these smaller precious memories become infinitely more dear to me.

Of course, this phenomenon hasn’t been around forever. When I was in elementary school, the craze hadn’t yet been fully realized. I was the weird pigtailed nerdling recruiting “trainers” to “battle” via vending machine capsules (Poké Balls) and the piece of paper inside illustrated with a stick-figure Pokémon. We’d shout out attacks and carry anything we could find in our backpacks that even slightly resembled the illustrious red and white globes. Several “trainers” defected to Team Rocket and would hassle us at recess. I decided to call myself Jessie and my buddy Jamie got the honor of being James. Later in the year I researched Robert Goddard as part of an overhead projector assignment and the two of us somehow managed to earn an A though we recited the Rocket motto during the presentation. Life was good. The years advanced and Pokémon grew with me. My network of fellow trainers expanded into a global organization I didn’t need to rely on Tamagotchi candy keychains or capsules to role-play. The advent of the Pokémon games simply felt like a natural extension of the non-video games I played throughout school. Though I had considered myself a gamer long before the introduction of Pokémon Red and Blue, the day those games were announced was no less monumental. Perhaps even as a child I knew something big was happening. Maybe I could sense the significance of that event; the impact one simple game could have on my future as a gamer, an anime fan, a geek, and as a person. The first few magical hours I spent with Pokémon Blue (for Meowth, my favorite Pokémon) were nothing short of mindblowing. I knew something fantastic had landed. But it wasn’t until recently that I discovered what, exactly. Delving back into that familiar world with the re-releases that have been bestowed upon loyal fans of late has taught me several valuable lessons: lessons that I didn’t realize were being taught all of this time, and some that are so relevant to this point in my life that it’s scary. I don’t intend to create meaning where there surely is none, but I’m putting fingers to the keyboard today to share the life lessons that I’ve learned (and am still getting down) from the wonderful world of Pokémon. Of course, I have to thank regular,Gamescom 2013- Watch The Sims 4's Trailers_3, inspirational people for teaching me some of these lessons. But that doesn’t mean you can’t glean some savory knowledge from Pokémon. Come with me, and perhaps leave enlightened.

1. Being an overachiever is in no way a bad thing. Simply squeaking by has never been the trademark of successful individuals. In school, I resented the fact that I could read earlier than my fellow students, and that my teachers asked me to complete book reports on Marie Curie or Clara Barton while my classmates gathered on the square carpet and participated in reading aloud from our colorful storybooks. I couldn’t understand why I should have to work so hard just because I was capable of doing it. Alienation wasn’t something I appreciated, and I definitely felt it when my teacher, Mrs. McGraw, would announce to the class that I would not be joining them in their egg-shell-in-a-glass-of-Coke experiment analysis, that I was busy with a book report and did not need to be bothered. It frustrated me. It enraged me. Most of all, my feelings were hurt. I just wanted to be the same, to squeak by with forgetting my homework or fudging some incorrect reading comprehension questions. I was lazy and began spelling words I knew full well were wrong just to try to prove to my teachers that I needed time to learn, too, and that I didn’t want to do all of that extra work. Coincidentally, around that time, I found myself running into trouble in Pokémon. I'd try to face Pokémon gym leaders having only battled when absolutely necessary, flee from duplicated wild encounters, and try to coast through the game with my overpowered starter monster I didn’t see the point in wasting time on Pidgeys, Rattatas, and Caterpies when adventure was waiting around the corner. So when I met up with Misty,Gaming Around the Web- August 25th, 2013, who fought water with my water (Squirtle), I was in a bit of a quandary. I couldn’t comprehend why my Squirtle wasn’t doing the job all by himself, and why Misty was pummeling me with that darn Starmie. My initial approach to change the outcome of the battle was to simply stock up on potions and run in guns blazing. And just as you can imagine, I failed miserably. I tried the impossible after that: I leveled my Pokémon team equally, grinding level to level even though the repetition bored me to tears. I ensured that every single member of my team was fully capable, level-wise, of tackling Misty, even if it meant they were criminally overleveled. When Starmie fell to my Pidgeotto, I was floored, overjoyed,‘The Walking Dead’ Season 3 Deleted Scene- Rick Hallucinat, in the way that only you can be after taking out a particularly austere boss. And it dawned on me: what if my parents, teachers, and the rest of the adults in my life were right? What if they saw potential in me and were preparing me for that great boss battle that we know as life? After those days, my overachieving didn’t seem like too much of an issue anymore. In fact, I saw it as a necessity, and something that I’d continue to uphold throughout the rest of my school days despite the teasing from friends who considered me a nerd or a teacher’s pet, or those who assumed I was doing more than everyone else for attention. I enjoyed the praise from faculty and especially my parents, but they didn’t know I was a workhorse because I just wanted to be prepared. These days I waver, with all of the responsibilities I attempt to take on, and I’ve worked myself away from the overachiever I grew up as. But as I run into real-world issues that I need to tackle, I find myself reliving that battle with Misty, and forcing myself to complete everything I need to, and more, even if there’s a little repetition involved. Breezing through the game didn’t earn me that Cascade Badge. It’s not going to make me a professional journalist, either. For reminding me that working harder than hard is integral to success, I have Pokémon to thank.

2. Being “bad” might be cool,Last Reminder- Blogging The Boys Fantasy Leagues And Slots Are Still Available!, but it won’t get you where you want to be. It’s almost universal knowledge that I haven’t always been a savory individual. Heck, I’m still not. I fed on controversy and being an angry annoyance and the anonymous call-you-out-in-the-hallway-for-being-a-douche voice you heard in school. I didn’t get along well with others. That’s a road I’m still trying to pave, improving human relations. Being a rebel was always more appealing to me. Doing bad, speaking out, and most importantly, looking ten kinds of awesome were more important than earning anyone’s trust, approval, or friendship. This worked for me for several years. I happily coasted through life with no regard for the repercussions of my actions. Because being cool was way more important — being the outcast, the voice of the under-represented. Being a jerk was fun, and as long as I was a jerk to the right people it worked. In return, though, what has it ever gotten me? Universal dislike. The loss of respect from peers I have wanted nothing but to get along with. It’s gotten me into plenty of hairy situations, and the bad kind of experience that I wouldn’t wish on anyone Think about it for a second and realize that Team Rocket has never successfully captured Pikachu for old Giovanni. It’s true. But tell me they don’t look wicked awesome doing their motto, parading around in their coordinated costumes, and popping off with witty quips. Sure, they seemed like bad enough dudes, but did they ever really succeed in their mission? No. But we laud them anyway. And in-game, whenever we saw members of the dreaded Rocket gang hanging around, weren’t the first things that came to mind how obnoxious it was going to be to listen to their corny lines of dialogue, battle their stupid Raticates and Koffings, and earn little experience to show for it? They were the in-game Buzz Killingtons. Did they even have friends of their own except their fellow Rockets? They never exuded anything but disgusting overconfidence along with, I’m sure, some unsavory smells. While they might have looked in the mirror and seen a cool, confident organization with goals surpassing that of any mere trainer, those of us looking in from the outside were laughing, and not along with them. Perhaps they were a successful and influential organization in their own right, but never to the ones who mattered most. Through several incidents and words from friends, I’ve had to to learn that hard lesson myself, to drop how “cool” I want to be from being a complete rhymes-with-Witch in order to get anywhere. And it’s a lesson you can take away from the infamous organization as well, especially if you find yourself headed down that path. When the urge to transform into a tough guy hits, ask yourself: Is this going to land me that Pikachu? Chances are, no. No, it’s not. Will it get you a one-way ticket to a punch into next Tuesday, hatred from your peers, and a solitary road to a destination you think you’re entitled to? Meowth, dat’s right. For reminding me that being a terrible person isn’t going to get me anywhere, I have Team Rocket to thank.

3. Cheating to get ahead will only hurt you in the end. I was the proud owner of a Game Genie back in Pokémon’s infancy. Really, I preferred to thumb through the tiny booklet embedded in the back of the device rather than actually put them to use, but I was known to cheat here and there to get all of the Pokémon I possibly could. I saw no harm in entering codes to capture the elusive Mew. I was no stranger to the Cinnabar Island trick, exploiting the infinite item glitch and pocketing the strange Pokémon that resulted as I surfed along Cinnabar’s coast. Leveling my team to 99 was tiresome, tedious work, and when I realized an infinite amount of Rare Candies could do the job in half the time, I knew I’d have a team of fighting-fit behemoths in no time. After that, trouncing my competition (which, back then consisted of classmates and my cousins) would be no contest. Ever the egomaniac, I decided all of my pocket monsters should level to 99, no matter which one. Despite the warnings from friends who had attempted the same item exploitation over and over with grave results, I pressed on because that was a fast track to success. And how would my friends know I hadn’t simply poured all of my time into the game? They wouldn’t. I’d come out smelling like roses, and earn their undying trust and respect... or so I thought I can still vividly recall the day of “the big Pokémon battle,” as we had coined it in our various circles. All of my bragging was finally going to be put to the test. Before class began that day, I had gotten out my Game Boy to do some last-minute tinkering. It seemed I was curiously low on Rare Candies, and a level 99 Porygon wasn’t going to simply appear out of thin air. Off I journeyed to Cinnabar Island after painstakingly sitting through the tired old man’s schtick about catching a Weedle. Right on time, Missingno. appeared, and in a moment of pure cockiness I tossed a Master Ball and incorporated it into my party. What would they possibly say if I won all of the battles with a Pokémon that shouldn’t even exist? At lunch that day I hurriedly began to link up with my first opponent, when I realized I hadn’t yet turned off my Game Boy from my tinkering earlier. I decided it wasn’t an issue and proceeded to go through the necessary motions to enter the coliseum, which included saving my game. I had already started the trash talking, “Missingno. is at his highest level, and I’m gonna win,” etc. I can only imagine how corny I sounded. But I was about to be thrown off my high horse and into a brick wall, as my Game Boy’s screen grew black, as if the game had reset itself. My first assumption was that it had simply died. My friends crowded around the screen, wildly excited as this was the “big” event of the day, and most of them were waiting to take my place and battle their next opponent. I turned the system back on, hurriedly, only to discover that my save data was, well, nonexistent. I cried in public in the lunch room that day, and I know I was made fun of as I ran to shove the game in my backpack. I didn't look at it again until I got home, where I found that saving Missingno. could result in loss of game data or several other complications. It shouldn’t have come as a surprise, as it wasn’t even an entity that should have existed in the first place. Yet I was so hellbent on being #1 that I had forgone winning the honest and respectable way To this day, I won’t glitch in a Pokémon game, and I prefer to keep my methods strictly conventional. Of course, this translates into real life as well. Throughout my 24 years of living, I’ve been known to partake in shady dealings simply to make myself seem innocent or better than others,D.C. Councilmember Jack Evans Under Ethics Inquiry CBS DC, and when I think back to the loss of all of that work that I did in Pokémon (even while cheating) I am literally sick to my stomach. The honest journey I made to obtain all of the Pokémon was so much longer than it needed to be, but boy did it feel good when I finally completed the game. In the real world, these same principles apply. You can cheat and swindle for instant gratification, but it only takes one time for all that you’ve worked to build to come tumbling down before you. And it doesn’t have to be that way. Be you, be honest. It’s hard, and something I struggle with even today — taking the easy way to victory. But it’s a lesson worth learning. For reminding me that cheaters never prosper, I have Missingno. to thank.

4. Don’t discount the “little people” in life. For anyone who’s ever played a Pokémon game, this should be a no-brainer. Consider a Magikarp Their splashing may be worthless in the long run, but wait for them to grow. Would you want to deal with them when they’ve fully grown up and “splashing” is at the bottom of their list? Sometimes it’s the most “insignificant” people you know who end up influencing your life the most, and it’s important to give credit where credit is due. For reminding me never to discount the underdogs and the “little people,” I have Magikarp to thank. 5. Think your work in life is over? There’s so much more to do. Once upon a time, there were 151 different pocket monsters. Today, there are several hundred, as you can gather from the exhaustively detailed Pokedex entries around the internet. And you thought you were a master? Think again. No matter how hard you work in life or how much you accomplish, you’re never going to finish bettering yourself. There are an infinite number of ways to continually improve your life, your personality, your living situation, and even the company you keep. Don’t settle when you think you’ve reached a zenith. There’s always something more to do, a new challenge to conquer, and a new “legendary” moment waiting in life for you to tackle. Life moves faster than the blink of an eye, and if you’re not ready for it it may just pass you by. So realize that your work on this planet is never done until you draw your dying breath, and keep on living and learning for yourself, your loved ones, and for the dreams you know you can’t give up on. For reminding me that I can’t just give up now, I have Pokémon to thank. What can you thank Pokémon for? Brittany Vincent is a freelance entertainment writer who wields a BFG made of killer ambition. The VIP is you- EDM economics and a changing focus in clubla

<html>A E [Nightlife Issue] The VIP is you: EDM economics and a changing focus in clubland Deadmau5 performs at Hakkasan. Similar stories We All Press Play: Jordan Stevens 10 signs you're a Las Vegas club rat Nightlife grows up on Fremont East Similar Photos Thu, Aug 29, 2013 (12:01 a.m.) An hour before Deadmau5 takes the decks on a Saturday night at MGM Grand’s Hakkasan, anxious clubgoers are already packing the dancefloor, not so much dancing as pressing up against each other in attempts to inch forward toward the central DJ booth. From the VIP tables flanking the walls, the scene almost looks more like the crowd at a concert than patrons at one of the world’s most lavish nightclubs. Five years after Las Vegas’ initial club explosion, the gap between the two audiences is increasingly narrow. While the demographic filling the Strip’s clubs has largely remained the same,“The Butler” Tops Weekend Box Office For Second Week_0, the experience clubgoers pursue has evolved from one of celebrity-seeking, bottle service exclusivity to an immersive, performance-driven entertainment experience within the club walls. Today’s nightlife scene is less club-hopping and cover charges and more ticketed events for which clubgoers plan weeks in advance. It’s the headliner―not the thrill of getting past the velvet rope―that draws the crowd. Industry players credit that change to a combination of customers’ evolving tastes and a shifting economic landscape that has cemented nightclubs as a critical part of Las Vegas’ identity. “As more clubs open and casinos are driving so much financial support into building these amazing nightclubs throughout the Strip, the expectation of the customer is higher; their sophistication is higher,Royal Farms proposes new plan for Annapolis City Dock locati,” says Tao Group co-owner Jason Strauss. “It’s a much more competitive market and a much more fast-paced landscape for club owners and hospitality owners.” The shift began around 2008, when the heyday of the über-exclusive, celebrity-hosted nightclub-lounge peaked along with the economy. The same day Strauss was getting ready to open Lavo at the Palazzo, the Dow fell 70 points―and continued to dive over the next three days. Throughout Las Vegas and the world, nightclub operators scrambled for a strategy. “They couldn’t afford to be complacent anymore. They had to up their game and to really take care of their customers, to give them the best experience possible for the money that they were spending,” says Light Group Creative Director and nightlife veteran Nick Gold. In order to compete, clubs shifted toward creating unique experiences to entice customers―top name DJs, dancers and theatrical performances that would appeal to both the big spenders and the bros pooling their money for a weekend getaway. With the rise of EDM in pop music and Electric Daisy Carnival’s move to Las Vegas in 2011,Only those living in a cocoon would miss the disqu, club operators leveraged the genre’s popularity to tap the growing market of dance music fans. EDM moved into the main room, along with expansive coordinated productions, paving the way for the Light Group/Cirque du Soleil collaboration Light at Mandalay Bay, where the focus on top-tier technology, immersive performance and buzzworthy DJ talent is matched by its attentiveness to the GA fan experience. “We don’t underestimate the value of that person who might spend 20 bucks on a ticket. That person, to me, is just as important as the person who buys the 85-liter bottle of whatever it is,” says Light Music and Marketing Director and former Swedish House Mafia manager Amy Thomson, an industry powerhouse whose résumé dates back to legendary London nightclub Ministry of Sound. Thomson says she wants to appeal to the GA customer. “It’s that person screaming when the DJ comes on; it’s what makes your night; it’s what makes the DJ’s night. It’s the person who will listen to new music and tweet and try to Shazam it and try to ask the DJ what it is. I’m not the least bit interested in opening a massive VIP bar.” That’s not to say the VIP doesn’t remain a critical part of the nightclub ecosystem. But these days, you’re more likely to find booths and cabanas flanking the sidelines of the club while the DJs―and their fans―take center stage on the dancefloor. “Every lesson I ever learned, from Pacha Ibiza backwards, is that if the dancefloor’s kicking, the VIPs are happy. And that’s it,” Thomson says. “If you put the VIPs on the dancefloor, the dancefloor dies. And then no one’s happy.” And keeping up with the evolving Vegas clubber means staying connected through technology and social media―and giving them something to tweet about. “Marquee just passed 30,000 followers on Instragram. That’s the most-followed Instagram account of any club in Vegas,” Strauss says. “We have an entire team whose job is to live and breathe culture. The customer is becoming savvier, so we have to be that much quicker.” When asked to predict who will be lining up outside Marquee five years from now, Strauss is less concerned about who than why. “Who knows? That’s all in the future. For a group like us, our success will come on how quickly we can identify that trend, adapt and deliver on that experience.” Andrea Domanick

Laura Mvula on why she, like many black women, shaves her he

<html>So, Laura, let's start with one of your most defining features, your hair
There's a story here. I begged my mum for years to let me have braids, and she finally said yes when I was a teenager, and I really loved them. Then, I had my first weave at university but, looking back, the hair was far too dark for me, although I did enjoy how soft and straight it was. Then came the pivotal moment: I went on an exchange trip to New York and met a girl out there who had the most amazing hair I'd ever seen. She told me it was relaxed, a process I'd avoided up until this point due to being a total wuss 鈥?I'd heard it was really painful. But, this girl said she'd do it for me and that she did hers all the time. I phoned my mum for advice, and she said to definitely have it done at a salon. Obviously, I thought I knew better and ignored her. What happened?
She put on the relaxer and was halfway through my hair before I stopped her. I knew it shouldn't hurt this much 鈥?my scalp was on fire. By the time she'd finished the whole head my scalp was severely damaged and the chemicals had burned pot-holes in my head. I lost a lot of hair and it was a very steep, painful learning curve. What did you do?
I wore wigs for a while after that, which was actually fun. But since then I've seen how complex the issue of hair is for black women,My take on ‘bias’ — perhaps it isn’t a bad thin, especially in the west. I love that film and I'm certainly one of those women who has had an interesting hair journey.Sounds like it. What did you do when it grew back?
I was getting married straight after university and my mum said I had to have hair for my wedding day [laughs]. So, I had the front relaxed, and a hairpiece at the back. After my wedding, I tried the Rihanna half-weave/half-shave look for a while. Then, came my big turning point. I bumped into my cousin after she'd shaved her hair very short and she looked incredible. She seemed so effortless and cool and I wanted that. And, I've had it like that ever since. In fact, today is hair day; it's about 5mm long now,Yahoo tops Google in U.S. web traffic in July_0, which is way too long [laughs], so I'm off to have it cut.Let's talk about skin, was yours problematic growing up?
When I was a teenager I had terrible acne, right until my early twenties. My aunty said that would help and it did wonders for my complexion, so I still use that 鈥?and little else really. That's so low-maintenance. I use about 10 skincare products a day.
Really? See I thought even that was quite high-maintenance.So when did you start getting into makeup,Busta Rhymes Busted for DUI_0?
I bought my first bit of makeup at 16 when my parents let me, but it was just a few items, inspired by 鈥?I wanted my hair and makeup to look like hers. I made mistakes all the time though. My friends would say "Can I do your makeup?" and you learn, pretty quickly, that what works on them doesn't work on you. But for me, it was a red lip that never really worked. I envy those who can wear red lipstick or any bold lip colour really. My top lip just doesn't seem to take colour 鈥?there's nothing I can do to change that, so I usually just use a nude on the bottom lip.I really struggled to find the foundation that matched my skin when I was younger 鈥?did you?
Oh yes. I started buying foundations with what I could afford as a teenager. I could never find my shade on the high street, that was a given, but black hair shops sold ,Win ‘The Walking Dead’ Season 3 Blu_3, which I still use today. When I was a teenager I toured with this glamorous a cappella group and they always wore makeup. They were majorly into and I'd steal bits from them. As I got older I discovered and never looked back. But, I still use Sleek foundation; I wear my makeup quite heavy and matte, and Sleek is the thickest foundation I've found. What's your absolute makeup essential?
I like a dramatic pink blusher, usually Mac or Sleek. Because my hair is short, it gives me licence to go overboard everywhere else [laughs]. In my mind,Sketch it out- hands, anyway.

What's your one failsafe tip?
I like pastels and lighter shades on darker skins. I feel like it lifts everything and accentuates being chocolate. No plum lipsticks for you!
No way. My makeup artist [Gabby Ciullo] knows the kind of colours I like, but if I have to use another artist they always opt for plum lips and gold eyes. They just see my hair and say "". But that's not my style at all. I like that nude shades on darker skins are unexpected, and they're beautiful. What else is in your makeup bag right, now?
[Rummages] Always perfume. I wore on my wedding day so that's my default. Also, smells like you've just had a bath, which is brilliant for on the road. So you always feel fresh, and not like a sweaty hipopotamus.Do you have a more modern beauty icon?
I've been inspired by recently, her makeup is nude, or, she just wears a daring lip colour. It just looks so fresh and modern.OK Laura, what's your final word on beauty?
I love my complexion but like so many of us, in the early years at primary school, I grew up thinking that my dark skin wasn't a great thing. I've found freedom in music and songwriting, which has given me a freedom in how I present myself. I'm glad I've got makeup to celebrate that with. It's never about covering up and always about being authentic and celebrating what you have, and what you enjoy.More delights from 's beauty bag Clockwise from left: Nicki Minaj's Pink Friday; Sleek's Cr猫me To Powder Foundation in Hot Chocolate; New Cid's Ice pop in Coral Crush; Tea Tree's Tea Tree Sensitive Facial Cleansing Wipes; Mac's Powder Blush in Melba</html>
