In business you either have assets or you have no business. Building an asset is essential for any artist. It takes a lot of work to push any [ music project] and if you don't know what you are doing you will spend a lot more money than time. So building an asset in this case is building a list of people who support what you are doing. Besides your family and friends who already believe in you. It is hard to convince a stranger to support you as an independent.

 +
With that mind it comes down to building a win win relationship with others who already have a relationship with those strangers. Since as an independent artist you are not going to have $100,000?s of dollars to push your project. You have to be creative with your marketing. You have to set realistic goals and put in the time necessary to promote your projects.

Luckily for all of us facebook, twitter, instagram, myspace music, and a myriad of other social media sites are free and with the proper strategy we can promote to like minded people. We cannot only network with these people we can help them with their projects and in turn they will reciprocate and help you with your projects.

Since your music is just a product in your business you have to recognize that you main project is you. You have to be able to sell yourself to the people you are trying to cultivate a relationship before they will be willing to either help you or buy anything from you. Believe it or not most people do not have the talent or the fortitude to step out of the shadows and do what you have the courage to do so they admire people who are not scared to share their talents.

However you cannot take that for granted you have to still make them feel like they are part of something or they will never buy anything from you.The best way to do that as an independent is to recognize them as people and not just a number you hope to sell something to.

So overall your mission as an independent trying to build a name for yourself is to build an asset which is a list of emails, cell numbers, address, and any other way you can contact your supporters so you can promote your future projects without having to do all the work over and over again. Once you build a list of supporters you can keep in contact with your job does not stop there once they are on your list you job then becomes to keep them interested in what you are doing by continually updating them on what you work on, where you are touring, and who you are working with.

Your job will never stop if you want to be relevant and gain any kind of popularity with your target market.
