‘League of Denial’ Shows NFL Ignoring Concussion Evidence,

BOSTON Concussion and head injury experts all agree that conclusions and steps forward are tricky when it comes to the relationship between football and brain damage.
What Frontline’s new documentary shows, however, is that there would be a better chance of conclusions and steps forward had the NFL not spent the last two decades systematically attacking concussion research it didn’t like while producing its own flawed findings.
In League of Denial: The NFL’s Concussion Crisis, Frontline’s Michael Kirk and ESPN’s Mark Fainaru-Wada and Steve Fainaru the NFL has taken since concussion pressures first arose about 20 years ago. The airs Oct. 8 at 9 p.m. and coincides with the release of the Fainaru brothers’ book, League of Denial: The NFL, Concussions and the Battle for Truth, which was part of the PBS project. Frontline is produced locally in Boston by WGBH.
In the documentary and book, which have been as the Fainarus conducted research for more than a year, details are given about how the NFL and commissioner Roger Goodell discounted findings from the science and medical communities as research increasingly showed that football players were in danger of long-term brain damage.
The documentary opens by talking about Mike Webster, a former Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker who died in 2002 at the age of 50. It could have chosen any other of the many former NFL players whose lives have been destroyed by degenerative brain disease,Patriots Jerseys Sale, but Webster was the first and remains one of the most harrowing of those former football players who disintegrated as the NFL hid or refused to look further at concussion evidence.
League of Denial mixes interviews with leading scientists and researchers, anecdotes from former players and their families, and liberal amounts of head-crushing game footage as it details the NFL’s response to concussion concerns over the years. The NFL first acted in 1994 when it started its Mild Traumatic Brain Injury committee, a group that immediately tipped off anyone looking closely that the NFL didn’t think head hits were causing any real damage.
The committee, led by a rheumatologist rather than a neurologist and packed with NFL insiders, proceeded to publish studies over the following years that suggested that concussions were not harmful, including claims that players could return to games if they were concussed, or that a repeat concussion soon after the first head injury would not cause more damage. The NFL also included phrasing that flat-out denied links between playing football and long-term brain damage.
The research community, meanwhile, was finding very different results. But even after the discovery of chronic traumatic encephalopathy, or CTE, in the brain of Webster and others,Miley Cyrus on ‘Today’- Singer talks about her ‘sexual si, those findings could not get an audience with the NFL. In fact, League of Denial shows a record of hostility from the NFL toward independent research, from personal attacks on doctors and scientists to outright mocking of research that went against the NFL’s longtime stance.
The film draws on many firsthand experiences to trace the path of the NFL’s interaction with concussions. It starts with Webster, whose body shocked the doctor who performed his autopsy when Webster died at 50 looking like a man many years older. From feet with cracks in them so big they had to be duct-taped together to a mouth coming apart to the point that he used superglue to hold his teeth in, Webster’s body was ravaged by football but it was his head that drew the most alarm.
Webster was found to have layers of scar tissue on the front of his skull where extra skin had built up from repeated abrasions. The real damage, though,Patriots Jerseys On Sale, was inside. The doctor assumed he’d find a destroyed brain based on the state of Webster’s body, but instead the brain appeared to be in excellent condition. It follows the bullying of the Mild Traumatic Brain Injury committee’s new leader, Ira Casson, and shows how Boston University researchers started to look at brains and found incredible amounts of CTE conditions in the NFL players it examined. It talks to wives and widows and examines the NFL’s sudden change of position after congressional hearings comparing the NFL to the tobacco industry spooked the league into making some changes.
Through it all, Goodell can be heard giving a common refrain when pressed about what the NFL knows about concussions. He continually points back to science, saying the medical community has to answer those questions.

The pair reportedly flirted through the app and found common ground in their love for pets.

Piper Kennedy is a Los Angeles model who claimed she met Ryan at a Starbucks.
Then, right before their friendly rapport bloomed into something more, Piper “fell off.”
“And I'm like sitting here like, 'what the heck?,'” Ryan said. “I'm like going all over my texts, like, 'I didn't say anything wrong.' I did absolutely nothing wrong.”
He sent her occassional texts over the next two weeks, but never got a response. Then, he decided he was “over it.”
But he still wanted to give it one last try.

While he waits for his love life to heat up, Ryan is enjoying his 15 minutes.
He reported on Instagram that he would be making stops at NBC's Today Show and put in an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel. He’s also doing his best to promote his album, where he sings about his hopes for the future.

He clearly has the trust of his quarterback, which should result in him seeing a handful of deep targets, and he has shown enough athletic ability up to this point that the game plan should give you confidence that he can produce for your fantasy squad this weekend.
Thompkins has seen more targets from Brady than Demaryius Thomas has from Peyton Manning this season, and while I think the addition of Gronkowski will eventually take some of those looks away (and that he ll assume his position as the second-most valuable tight end), I don’t think it starts this week.

If LeBron James ceased to exist, Kevin Durant would likely be the league's odds-on favorite to win MVP on a yearly basis. The only problem is, James does exist, regardless of whether he's human or not. Still, even with the reigning MVP chasing a third ring in Miami, Durant has quite a shot at his first Maurice Podoloff Trophy. But Durant plays at somewhat of a disadvantage when it comes to the MVP race: he's teammates with Russell Westbrook. NFL trade deadline- Isaac Sopoaga only player moved at quiet

A handful of big names were rumored to be available ahead of Tuesday s NFL trade deadline Jared Allen, Maurice Jones-Drew, Josh Gordon, Larry Fitzgerald, Tony Gonzalez, Hakeem Nicks. As usual, though, the annual event passed as little more than a blip on the radar.
The lone deal announced before the 4 p.m. ET cutoff hit: Philadelphia to New England for a 2014 fifth-round pick. Hardly a blockbuster. Every other team chose to stay put, opting to wait for free agency or other events to unfold this offseason.
Allen s future appeared to be most in question earlier on Tuesday. A less than three hours before the trade deadline that the Seahawks and a second, unidentified team had expressed interest in the Vikings veteran pass-rusher, who s set to be a free agent after the 2013 season.
Ultimately, nothing came of that trade buzz,Cheap Authentic New York Giants Jerseys On Sale, perhaps due to Allen s massive $14 million-plus contract, of which more than half is still owed to him.
Nicks, also a soon-to-be free agent, may have been a fit for any receiver-needy teams out there. Atlanta s 2-5 start has rendered the latter dream all but impossible, so at least a few folks out there dreamed of a reunion between Gonzalez and his former team, 8-0 Kansas City.
Gordon and Fitzgerald still could be moved prior to the draft, as both have multiple years left on their current contracts and currently reside on teams in the midst of some manner of rebuilding. The Browns or Cardinals would have needed to receive an astronomic offer to part with either player right now. That s particularly true with relation to Arizona, a team that sits just a game back of a wild-card spot.
Several additional names popped up over the weekend, including Lions RB Mikel Leshoure, Saints RB Mark Ingram and even Raiders RB Darren McFadden. If their respective teams were actively shopping them, little traction was gained.
So, the Sopoaga trade stood as the only action at the 2013 deadline, following the trend of the NFL s moving day resulting in minimal activity. Last season, only two trades were completed: New England acquired CB Aqib Talib and Detroit dealt for WR Mike Thomas.
Talib proved invaluable for the Patriots during the second half of 2012 and the playoffs, and they re hopeful that Sopoaga can provide a little boost as well. New England found itself depleted along the interior of its defensive line after . Fellow tackle Tommy Kelly then injured his knee in Week 6; the date of his return remains in question.
Though he started seven of eight games for Philadelphia, the 32-year-old Sopoaga was not much of a factor. He was enough of a disappointment, it seems,Patriots Jerseys Sale, that the Eagles were willing to hand him off less than eight months after signing the ex-49er to a three-year, $11 million deal. Sopoaga is due $3.75 million in 2014 and $3.5 million in 15, though just $1 million of that is guaranteed. They will need to win two games in Boston if they are going to beat the surging Red Sox. But Wainwright appeared calm after he and the Cardinals lost Game 5 on Monday, seemingly unconcerned about what lay ahead.
He reminded everyone that Michael Wacha would be pitching next. Wacha, as a 22-year-old rookie, had already earned the trust of his teammates. He had already won a playoff elimination game on the road, carrying a no-hitter into the eighth inning against the Pittsburgh Pirates in Game 4 of the National League division series. He had already outdueled one of the best pitchers in baseball, the Los Angeles Dodgers' Clayton Kershaw — twice — in the NL Championship Series. Boyfriend charged with killing West Allis woman, hiding body
<html>A 40-year-old Kenosha man was charged Tuesday with first-degree intentional homicide and hiding a corpse in the death of his , whose body was found in a car trunk in Chicago.
Matthew McDowell was arrested Monday by Kenosha police after Erin C. Ziemendorf, 30,Texas abortion clinics stay open following ruling, was found dead in a vehicle located near a Greyhound bus station in Chicago.
The Cook County medical examiner identified Ziemendorf on Monday and determined she died from blunt force trauma to the neck.
McDowell went to Kenosha police Sunday to report an "accidental death" that occurred Saturday when he was arguing with Ziemendorf. McDowell told police they argued over their relationship, money and an impending vacation to Hawaii, according to the criminal complaint.
The complaint also states that McDowell told police that Zeimendorf swung a corkscrew at him,Cheap Authentic New York Giants Jerseys On Sale, and the two scuffled until McDowell heard a snap and thought he had broken her neck. When he realized she was dead, he said, he panicked and put her body in a duffel bag. McDowell remained in the Kenosha County jail Tuesday and is due back in court Nov. 5.
