The government shutdown has created more opportunities for less traffic on the Blue Ridge Parkway. It's still possible to get out there and see the Fall colors before they are gone for good.

The Goverment Shutdown is Making Mountain Travel Difficult

The government shutdown forced the closing of the Blue Ridge Parkway visitor centers, bathroom facilities, campgrounds, and picnic areas. The Great Smoky Mountain National Park has also been shut for sixteen days, since all park rangers were put on furlough, however an infusion of $75,000 from North Carolina and $305,000 from Tennessee will allow it to fully reopen… For five days.

Try Visiting Later in Autumn

There are some parks that are still open. However, the best thing might be to do with this whole situation is do a visit in later Autumn. Here’s your science lesson for the day. Every night has actually had such mild temperatures that the trees are still producing chlorophyll. Chlorophyll is, of course, the chemical that makes leaves green. The situation here that develops is that the remainly chlorophyll in the leaves covers up carotenoid (chemical that makes the orange hue). So when the temperatures drop enough, the chlorophyll will disappear and the yellow and orange shades of fall foliage will shine through on the mountaintops.

Drive Up to the Higher Elevations

Don’t worry if you’ve planned a trip to see the autumn colors soon though. You do still have plenty of time available to see the leaves at the higher elevations where the leaves will change much faster (due to the colder temperatures). State forests and parks are still open, so Mt. Pisgah would be a fun hike, with available picnic spots. A drive along the Blue Ridge Parkway will yield varying elevations and provide the most diverse views of the fall colors. Make sure to bring a sweater or jacket, as the difference in temperature between elevations can be as much as twenty to thirty degrees. Discover further about jump button by visiting our stirring site. Polarized sunglasses also help in enhancing fall colors. Bring along your best camera to take stunning pics! One of our favorite pastimes is to drive up to the Parkway overlook and snap pictures with your friends and amazing scenery in the background.

Why We Love the Mountains

Many people fall in love with the mountains after a trip here during the fall.Of course, we are in love with this place because we live here! If you'd like to live in an area with amazing Autumn scenery, look into the Blue Ridge Mountain Club. An expansive mountain community located on over 6,000 acres through Blowing Rock NC, Boone NC, Banner Elk and Linville NC, this neighborhood offers its own hiking trails, streams, picnic areas and campgrounds, so the government shutdown isn’t a worry.
