The Goverment Shutdown is Making Mountain Travel Difficult
The government shutdown forced the closing of the Blue Ridge Parkway visitor centers, bathroom facilities, campgrounds, and picnic areas. The Great Smoky Mountain National Park has also been shut for sixteen days, since all park rangers were put on furlough, however an infusion of $75,000 from North Carolina and $305,000 from Tennessee will allow it to fully reopen… For five days.
Try Visiting Later in Autumn
There are some parks that are still open. However, the best thing might be to do with this whole situation is do a visit in later Autumn. Here’s your science lesson for the day. You do still have plenty of time available to see the leaves at the higher elevations where the leaves will change much faster (due to the colder temperatures). State forests and parks are still open, so Mt. Pisgah would be a fun hike, with available picnic spots. A drive along the Blue Ridge Parkway will yield varying elevations and provide the most diverse views of the fall colors. Make sure to bring a sweater or jacket, as the difference in temperature between elevations can be as much as twenty to thirty degrees.
