Five Types of Unusual Retaining Walls
Retaining walls are an attractive and practical landscape masonry feature. Retaining walls help keep soil in place at steep drops on a slope. Materials often used to create retaining walls are timber, natural stone, and concrete blocks. An important benefit of wood timber walls is their inexpensive cost. Natural stone walls are old-fashioned and appealing in that natrual stones are harvested in a variety of colors, shades, shapes, and sizes. Natural stone walls are time consuming to set up, however, because the stones have to be stacked one by one to acheive the desired effect. Contemporary machine created concrete blocks come in a number of sizes, colors, and textures. Stacked walls are easy to assemble, and come complete with pins or clips to affix them to the adjacent block. In general, stone stacked walls can be purchased as full size, solid, or semi-solid.
There are a number of other materials that can be used to create creative and beautiful retaining walls. The following five examples give some idea of the versatility of retaining wall selection.
- Natural stone can be placed in gravity defying shapes by using wire fencing to hold the stones in place. With this type of retaining wall, costs can be reduced by making use of an inexpensive filler in the center of the pile.
- rusty sheet metal can make a beautiful retaining wall. This is a powerful choice as the appearance of the walls changes over time.
- Stone Walls With a Veneer Finish - . This wall sits on a hidden concrete foot, and after which the concrete mason carefully places on the stone veneer. Veneer finishes must be carefully matched to the coloring of the landscape and abode for best effectiveness.
- Retaining Walls Made of Brick - . Brick retaining walls should be constructed by a mason. They are double walls with a CMU concrete block in the middle. Older brick retaining walls are supported by a concrete encased steel beam in the middle.
- Retaining walls can also be made of concrete poured into a wooden form. These are nice smooth walls, although texture can be impoarted by roughing up the inner surface of the wood form.
