Born in 1968 in Manhattan, New York City, Marcus Jansen was educated in Europe during his young adult years. He studied Design and Commercial Painting at the Berufskolleg fur Technik ind Medien, Monchengladbach, Germany, in 1985. After his first year, he rejected the school's teaching methods and instead joined the U.S. Armed Forces in 1989. Jansen was assigned in 1991 to combat duty in Iraq during the First Gulf War, and was diagnosed with PTSD in 1992. He was discharged in 1997 and transformed his life from soldier to one of America's leading expressionist painters on the international art scene.
