Primary, middle, and secondary school students at the co-educational Mt Albert school were able to get a great view of New Zealand’s partial solar eclipse using specialised equipment. Students of Hebron College were privileged to experience the eclipse in a unique way, while learning about the exceptional phenomenon as it happened.
Hebron Christian College’s science teacher and hobbyist astronomer, Mr Darrell Crisp, provided students some specialised equipment to view the solar eclipse in the schools very own grounds. Special sunglasses and a telescope were brought in so that students could get an amazing view of the event. The eclipse, which was caused by the moon passing directly between the Earth and the sun, produced a near eighty seven percent coverage sun’s surface. Students at Hebron Christian College noticed a unique chilliness in the air as the sun’s rays became obscured by the moon.
Watching as the sky dimmed was a unique privilege for Hebron Christian College students. The North Island, northern Australia, and South Pacific islands had the very best vantage points for viewing the eclipse, while other areas experienced slightly lesser coverage. This year’s Hebron College students were also very lucky, since the next eclipse with a similar obscuration will not occur for another twenty three whole years. While there was a solar eclipse earlier this year, this most recent eclipse provided more coverage and was far more spectacular.
