One of the things I love to do when I visit a new city is to visit small, local shops. My particular favourites are bookshops and stationery shops.

There is something about the smell of walking into a bookshop that grabs your attention – perhaps giving a hint of the undiscovered treasures that may be found. Stationery shops don’t have the same smell, but I love to browse, spending time looking at what they are selling. More often than not I find myself at the cash register purchasing something that I promise myself will be useful.

Stationery shops are the ultimate Aladdin’s cave, full of surprises, from filing supplies to beautiful notebooks. Often I promise myself that if I just buy this lovely notebook or diary I will start writing regularly, but it never comes to pass. But, I am still left with a beautiful book I can tell myself I will write in... One day.

I discovered one such shop on a visit to Edinburgh, in the increasingly cool Morningside area. Full of coffee shops this is fast becoming the place to hang-out in this lovely city, and Stationery Express is a perfect example of a shop you can spend time browsing in before retiring for a much deserved cappuccino.
