carfax Inc. is a web-based commercial service that provides vehicle history reports to individuals and businesses on cars and light trucks for the U.S. and Canadian markets. vincheck 1984 Carfax was founded in Columbia, Missouri by a computer professional named Ewin Barnett III work with Robert Daniel Clark, an accountant from Huntingdon, Pennsylvania. [1] The company is now headquartered in Centreville, VA with a data center operation in Colombia. Barnett initially tried to fight against the odometer fraud. By working closely with the Missouri Automobile Dealers Association, in 1986, he offered the first Carfax vehicle history report to the dealer market release. vin alert These reports were developed with a database of only 10,000 records and were distributed by fax. At the end of 1993, Carfax has obtained information as nearly all fifty states. In December 1996, the company website was launched to provide consumers with the same vehicle history reports already available for businesses. In the fall of 1999, Carfax has become a wholly owned subsidiary of RL Polk & Co.
