Mammograms for Breast Augmentation Patients

Despite the chance of your implant rupturing from the pressure, health practitioners still recommend that women who have undergone a breast augmentation have a mammogram.

Women who are looking at breast enhancement should be aware that implants may hinder finding breast cancer within a mammogram. This is because the enhancement shows up as a solid white form, obscuring cancers above or below. In addition to making tumors more difficult to detect, improvements cause "false positive" results at the same time when calcium deposits and extensive scarring mimic the look of cancer, making the deposits difficult to tell apart from tumors over a mammogram. Biopsy might be required to determine whether these are malignant.

Specific mammogram methods have been developed to ensure that just as much breast tissue as you are able to is evaluated in women who have undergone breast augmentation surgery. This involves using extra pictures, called displacement opinions, which expose the girl to more light.

In 2004, her colleagues and Miglioretti published research in the Journal of the American Medical Association suggesting that 55% of breast cancers weren't initially detected on mammograms for women who have encountered breast augmentation surgery, even though the images were used.

This compares to about 30% of cancers which were not initially found for women who did not have breast enlargement surgery. These tumors were subsequently detected in later mammograms.

Still another problem is that calcium deposits can be viewed on mammograms and can be mistaken for possible cancer, resulting in additional surgery to biopsy or take away the implant to distinguish these deposits from cancer. Calcium remains could be felt as segments or bumps underneath the skin round the implant.

The displacement views do not protect against rupture, which becomes a better problem as improvements age. Ultrasound and MRIs can be used to detect breast cancer as opposed to mammograms, but this increases the cost of testing and may not be covered by medical insurance.

The underside line is to ask yourself if the advantages of breast augmentation outweigh the risks of much more serious conditions and complications. No one can answer this problem for you, except you and of course, your doctor.
