Take a moment during your day to look around and make note of all the graphic design you see. You'll find it on books, phones, computers, magazines, appliances, receipts, business cards, video games, electronics, buildings, and even on the junk mail you throw in the recycling bin. Graphic design is everywhere and can be found in many different sizes, materials, and shapes. It works to simplify, to beautify, and most of all, to communicate. Whether you're the owner of a company, a member of an organization, or hoping to promote an event, graphic design is the perfect tool to use to communicate with your audience.

Most often, your work will begin with a logo. This informative and eye-catching graphic is small but still very powerful. A logo abstractly conveys a brand's identity or its ideas, products, services, or events. Sometimes the connection is obvious (think of the Dunkin' Donuts coffee cup logo), while other times the logo only conveys the brand's style (like the elegant script used by Saks Fifth Avenue). In creating a brand, logos are essential because they appear in so many different places. Signage, advertisements, business collateral, shopping bags, products, vehicles, and promotional products are some of the places you might spot a logo desain.

But why? Why are logos so prevalent and how do they help a company create a brand?

Logos help customers remember your brand. People are better at remembering logos than they are at remembering names. If your logo is effective, it will stick in viewers' minds. It is also important to choose a logo that you can use for years and years to come. Changing logos confuses viewers and weakens brand recognition.

Logos communicate your message. If you're using an image, you can communicate your products and services (Dunkin Donuts, Auntie Anne's) or you can portray your name (Apple, Target, Taco Bell). The first technique is valuable if you want viewers to immediately know what you're selling. The second technique is great if you want viewers to remember your business's name as well as its logo. There are also logos that only use text (Saks Fifth Avenue, Netflix, eBay) or an abstract visual (Pepsi, Nike, msn). These logos communicate a company's style, values, concepts, and ideas.

Logos can be recognized worldwide. While foreign text is unintelligible, viewers can spot and recognize logos for global companies (Volkswagen, H&M, Starbucks).

Logos identify products as being a part of your company. When consumers see a new product on the shelf, they're more likely to purchase it if they recognize and respect the brand. And how do they know what the brand is? They see the logo. This also works for employees, vehicles, paperwork, apps, social media, etc. A brand is a living thing consisting of many different, fluctuating elements. When you improve your logo, you can communicate anything you want about your company-that you're young and hip, established and reliable, fun and friendly, chic and elegant. It's entirely up to you with how you desain logo
