Learning The Bass Fretboard

I play both ways now. I like the subtle nuances of playing with fingers. There is so much you can do. If you pull up on the string in the normal style, you get one sound. If you turn your index finger to the side and play off the side of your finger you can get a string bass sound especially if you pluck away from the bridge a ways. Then sometimes if the night is long I’ll try different things that I think are awesome but no one notices. One is to play all four strings with a different finger. Index on the low E and on down.
Have you ever held a bass before? If not, well, I suggest you go to youtube and want clips of bass players. They will show you how to hold the bass properly. The basic idea is to have it either sitting in your lap or hanging from its strap in front of you. Your (typically) left hand will be on the fret board, palm against the back of the neck. Your right hand will be by the "pickups" (the electronic sensor normally located around the middle of the body of the bass). It depends on your bass, what you're playing, and what you're comfortable with.
As you begin learning bass guitar it is much easier if you start playing numbers slowly and then as your confidence increases gradually speeding up through to the correct speed for a particular song.When you start learning new songs for your guitar you will have the most success if you play the number at perhaps half speed until you feel comfortable with playing it and then little by little increase the speed up to the normal pace for the song. So if you will only take a single piece of advice away from reading this it ought to be, get yourself a metronome!

If you want to learn some of your favorite songs but don't quite have the ear for it yet, you can always look up tabs for that song. Bassmasta.net is an authority on bass tabs and you can find almost all your favorite songs there. Tabs tell you what string and fret each note is, but almost all leave out timing and you have to figure that out all on your own. To read a tab, remember that the first string is on the bottom, so if it starts on with a 7 on the top line, it's the seventh fret on the G string.
