Don't give up on building a lightweight backpack however, though. There's yet another way. I made a backpack that weighs only two pounds also, and it is the full frame-and-hipbelt group. It began having an old frame package I've had since I was fourteen-years-old. I removed the old pack, which were chewed by mice and was beyond repair. Now I was prepared to create my new backpack

The hip belt and straps were still good, fortunately. The frame was surprisingly light, and metal on it's own. I got a big nylon duffel bag, which by itself just weighs nine ounces, and filled it high in my equipment. Then I simply used bungee cords to add it too the figure (freezer out) and it was ready. For the price of a duffel bag, I'd an external-frame backpack that not merely kept a lot, but weighed only two pounds.
