The BWSM has a mission to provide students of all ages with the necessary skills needed to enjoy a lifetime of music. The school environment is a nurturing, family-oriented one, where lively qualified instructors train students in voice and an extensive variety of musical instruments. Several BWSM voice teachers are piano teachers as well, and provide the enthusiastic edge that helps get singers excited about learning and growing their voice skills. Private and group classes that cover a range of class choices for children, teens and adults are available. Check the website for family group and monthly tuition discounts, and for group class schedules.
Many voice teachers avoid teaching children out of fear of hurting their voice or disappointment that they won't sound like adults. If done in the right way, however, singing lessons can be crucial in training a child's ear and vocal technique. Children not exposed to singing can grow up tone deaf, and children who sing but were never taught proper technique often develop hard-to-break bad habits that can actually lead to vocal damage. It is important that the following steps be taken so that the child will learn actual vocal technique (as opposed to just learning songs) while doing nothing to damage their vocal instrument.
An experienced voice teacher and vocal coach will help their students realize the full potential of their instrument by clearly imparting methods and tools for the voice student to access all facets of their voice. A good voice teacher will not dictate one, homogeneous way that all singers should sound. Rather, through the process of lessons, an experienced teacher like Arden will help each individual find his/her own unique sound and give them a healthy technique to strengthen it. The kind of approach that a voice teacher uses will generally vary a great deal depending on the strengths and weaknesses of each voice student.
Additionally, in order to better meet our goal to serve as the “Voice Teachers of the Barbershop Harmony Society,” we also discussed our commitment to provide more effective evaluations to all competitors. Rather than just noting performances errors and vocal production distractions across all five Singing category elements, we will be looking to better identify the root causes of vocal production issues and seek to address them within our coaching evaluations. As to the possible scoring impact, competitors may experience performances that demonstrate individual voices singing with better vocal quality (well-supported, freely produced and resonant) to be more appropriately rewarded.
My daughter is 6 and she loves to sing. She is notnaturally musical but she loves it, and I believe she hasthe capacity to learn and improve and hopefully achieve somedegree of competence. I am interested in recommendationsfor lessons or teachers who focus on kids like this. I'd belooking for someone singing teachers in Essex who knows how to encourage kids todevelop some of the musical awareness and voice control thatcome naturally to others, and who could understand whysomeone might want to work on a skill set that is not amongtheir natural strengths. She goes for the joy of singing while teaching how to find the notes.
