<html>A decade after Evan Ramsey sneaked a 12-gauge shotgun into his Alaska high school, where he gunned down a fellow student and the principal and wounded two others, he described how playing video games had warped his sense of reality.
“I did not understand that if I…pull out a gun and shoot you, there’s a good chance you’re not getting back up,” Ramsey said in a 2007 interview from Spring Creek Correctional Center, in Seward, Alaska. “You shoot a guy in ‘Doom’ and he gets back up. You have got to shoot the things in ‘Doom’ eight or nine times before it dies.”
Since Ramsey’s 1997 rampage, several other mass killers, including Columbine shooters Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold and Norwegian mass murderer Anders Breivik, have been linked to violent video games. And some experts worry that as the games get more violent and more realistic, so does their power to blur the line between fantasy and reality in alienated gamers.

The Juice- Cardinals move to brink of NL Central title with win and losses by Pi
The Juice- Cardinals move to brink of NL Central title with win and losses by Pi," the computer video game Ramsey described, was all the rage in the 1990s, but primitive by today’s standards, where gamers can play first-person shooters with movie-like graphics on high definition televisions.
“More than any other media, these video games encourage active participation in violence,” said Bruce Bartholow, an associate professor of psychology at the University of Missouri, who has studied the issue. “From a psychological perspective, video games are excellent teaching tools because they reward players for engaging in certain types of behavior. Unfortunately, in many popular video games, the behavior is violence.”
Harris and Klebold, who killed 12 fellow students and a teacher in 1999, were reportedly obsessed with “Doom.” Seung-Hui Cho, the 23-year-old who killed 32 people at Virginia Tech University in 2007, was,<a name="http://softvent.com/images/Giants-Jerseys-For-Cheap.html">Authentic Giants Jerseys Sale</a>, according to the Washington Post, a big fan of violent video games, specifically “Counterstrike.”

Aeroplan confusion rankles customers, Colo., movie theater gunman James Holmes, Jared Lee Loughner, who killed six and injured 13, including Rep. Gabby Giffords, in a 2011 Arizona shooting, and Breivik, who killed 77 people in Oslo, all were active video game players.
Adam Lanza, the troubled 20-year-old behind last December’s school shooting in Connecticut which left 20 children and six adults dead, was an avid player of violent video games.
In some cases, murderers appear to have been reenacting specific video game episodes when they killed in real life.
“Anders Breivik said he actually used his video game ‘Call of Duty’ to train for mass murder,” Dr. Paul Weigle, a child and adolescent psychiatrist at the Joshua Center, in Enfield, Conn., told FoxNews.com. “He called it training simulation. And certainly there were some reports Adam Lanza saw Breivik as a rival, and he was also engaged in shooting games and even the same one.”
Wiegel also cited the case of Devin Moore,Authentic Patriots Jerseys On Sale, an Alabama teen with no history of violence when he was brought in by police on a minor traffic violation. Once inside the police station, he took a gun from a police officer and shot three officers, then stole a police cruiser to make his escape.
"Life is a video game,” Moore, who said he was inspired by the game ‘Grand Theft Auto,’" told police later. “Everybody's got to die sometime."
“It’s quite possible that playing this script out numerous times in the game influenced his decision-making, and that is, in fact, what he said,” Wiegel said.
Advocates of victims of mass shootings have taken aim at the companies turning profits in the multibillion-dollar gaming industry. The parents of the victims killed or injured by Michael Carneal, a 14-year-old who fired upon a group of classmates at Heath High School in West Paducah, Ky., in 1997, filed suit against a host of video game manufacturers in relation to Carneal’s obsession with violent games including “Doom” and “Mortal Kombat.”
The case was dismissed in 2001, with the 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruling that it was "simply too far a leap from shooting characters on a video screen to shooting people in a classroom."
Several experts agree with the court decision, telling FoxNews.com that the link is either inconclusive, or that playing violent video games can at most be just one of several causes that prompts people to kill.
“I think it’s the wrong question -- whether there is a link between mass shootings and violent video game play,” Dr. Doug Gentile, a research psychologist and associate professor at Iowa State University, told FoxNews.com. “I understand people want to look for a culprit, but the truth of the matter is that there is never one cause. There is a cocktail of multiple causes coming together. And so no matter what single thing we focus on, whether it be violent video games, abuse as a child, doing drugs, being in a gang -- not one of them is sufficient to cause aggression. But when you start putting them together,<a href="http://keyamassociates.com/Patriots-Jerseys-For-Cheap.html" rel="bookmark">Authentic Patriots Jerseys Sale</ a>, aggression becomes pretty predictable.”
Dr. Phyllis Koch-Sheras, past president of the American Psychological Association’s Society of Media Psychology and Technology, said the link between fantasy violence on computer or television screens and real violence that leaves people injured or dead needs more study.
“We have to be very careful about saying what causes what,” Koch-Sheras said. “There is a lot of debate on the issue. But this much is certain: We need to definitely be studying this more before the violent video games run amok.”</html>
MILBANK- The GOP’s dangerous rationality
<html>By DANA MILBANK
WASHINGTON -- It has become fashionable to give a psychiatric diagnosis to those Republicans teeing up a government shutdown.
“They’re on a different planet,” Sen. Chuck Schumer of New York, a member of the Senate Democratic leadership, said last week. “Off the deep end.”
Majority Leader Harry Reid said Republicans “define insanity” with their behavior.
I’ve lapsed into the off-the-rocker shorthand, too,Authentic Patriots Jerseys On Sale, but this misstates -- and understates -- the problem. The trouble isn’t that Republicans on the defund-Obamacare mission are insane. It’s that they are being entirely rational.
Certainly, what they are doing is dangerous to the country and to the GOP brand: A minority within the government is saying that if their demands are not met, they will throw the nation into default and shock the economy by closing down the government.
But this doesn’t mean that the 228 House Republicans (joined by two Democrats) were acting irrationally when they voted Friday to keep the government operating only if Obamacare is jettisoned. Most of them were acting in their own rational self-interest, doing what’s necessary to survive in a political system gone mad.
The tally by political handicapper Stuart Rothenberg says that 211 of the 234 Republican seats in the House are “safe,” leaving only 23 even marginally competitive. Some of those seats are made safe by the incumbents’ skills or bank accounts. But many of the seats are safe because district lines have been drawn to make them uncompetitive.
The only way these Republican lawmakers would lose their seats is if they were ousted by a challenger in a low-turnout primary dominated by conservative activists. The surest way to keep their seats, therefore,Authentic Patriots Jerseys Sale, is to vote against anything and everything President Obama supports -- Obamacare above all.
The situation is similar for Republicans in the Senate, where 14 of the 15 GOP seats up in the next election cycle are either safely Republican or favoring the Republicans. To them, as well, the threat comes primarily if not entirely from the right.
Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas, the man leading the shutdown campaign, knows this better than anybody. Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) called him a “wacko bird,” but Cruz is, in fact, coldly calculating.
A new article about Cruz by Jason Zengerle in GQ confirms my impression of him as an opportunist driven more by ambition than ideology.
A Harvard Law School roommate of Cruz’s told Zengerle that Cruz refused to study with anyone who hadn’t been an undergraduate at Harvard, Princeton or Yale. But when the tea party became a political force and Cruz saw a route to power, he shed his elitism and posed as a rebellious outsider. His rise, and his ability to make even the grizzled Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell cower, is the result of a cunning -- and thoroughly rational -- exploitation of the system. The only wacko bird in Cruz’s office is on the Daffy Duck baseball cap that he keeps as an answer to McCain.
And McConnell, who is facing a conservative primary challenge in Kentucky,Authentic Giants Jerseys On Sale, is also acting rationally in trying to keep up with the Cruzes. McConnell has been a proud internationalist and hawk throughout his career, but after Cruz and fellow wacko-bird Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) opposed military action in Syria and McConnell’s primary opponent took the same position, poor McConnell broke with other Republican leaders and declared that he, too, opposed military action.
If McConnell and the other frightened Republicans are to be faulted, it’s for putting their own political survival above all else and doing things they know are dumb.
One of the most honest assessments of the Republican position came from Rep. Thomas Massie of Kentucky,<a href="http://www.tecnologo.org.br/home/cadastroempresa/what-college-football-playoff-would-look-now0" rel="bookmark">What the College Football Playoff would look like</ a>, who explained last week why he favored the shutdown showdown: “All that really matters is what my district wants. And my district is overwhelmingly in favor of my position.”
An enlightened officeholder might decide that other things matter, too: his oath to the Constitution, the national interest, and his obligation to lead people and not just reflexively to follow public opinion. His constituents may not be aware of the hit the economy takes from a government shutdown and a default -- but Massie should.
Massie’s position is shortsighted -- but it is rational. Until Republicans can fix their truly insane primary system,<a href="http://www.fach-az.web.id/index.php/komunitas.html?func=view&catid=8&id=2443#2443" rel="bookmark">Jason Giambi hits walk</ a>, it may be the only logical response.

At high schools nationwide, Coding 101

However, only one in 10 schools in America teach coding, according to a YouTube public service announcement, featuring Microsoft Founder Bill Gates and Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg. It s intended to show kids that coding is cool.
You may be surprised to see some of programming s newest students.

He s not the only one who realizes the importance of this growing need.
"Yea, it s definitely something I want to do as a career," said Middleton 10th-grader Daniel Holtzberg.
His teacher explains that these skills are in high demand.
"Anything from an office worker to someone that is programming a website to someone that is programming an application for a cell phone."
Eleventh-grader Amanda Hernandez enjoys coding. "It s very challenging but at the same time, when you look at your work and the final product,<a href="http://keyamassociates.com/Patriots-Jerseys-For-Cheap.html" title="Authentic Patriots Jerseys Sale">Authentic Patriots Jerseys Sale], you re just like, wow, I can t believe I just did that.

Aaron Francis says this class has inspired him to go into the gaming industry.
"If one person sees someone playing a video game, they re gonna wanna do it because they think it s enjoyable," he said.
Seeing that the next generation of programmers are listening to this generation s success stories, the hope is coding will catch on in schools throughout the nation.</html>

Oracle Team USA wins America's Cup
<html>Olympic champion: Sailing is not elitist Oracle has appeared determined to make life difficult for itself since the start of its defense.

The incident also cost three crew members their place on the team.
Racing in AC-72 catamarans, the first time these boats have been used in the competition, the crews expect to sail at around 40 knots or 74 kilometers an hour.
Excitement is never far away -- but then again,[http://verkko-opisto.pkky.fi/wiki/index.php/K%C3%A4ytt%C3%A4j%C3%A4:Vyuyvkak2#Powell.27s_Books_events-_Oct._7 Powell's Books events- Oct. 7</ a>, never is danger.
Only last March, British sailor Andrew Simpson died after being trapped under a catamaran in an America's Cup training session with Swedish team Artemis.
Last October,<a href="http://keyamassociates.com/Patriots-Jerseys-For-Cheap.html" title="Authentic Patriots Jerseys On Sale">Authentic Patriots Jerseys On Sale], the Oracle team came perilously close to an accident of their own, while the Emirates boat has also had its own share of scary moments.
But this past fortnight has brought sailing to the forefront of world sport with Oracle's miraculous fightback set to go down as one of the greatest of all time.
With both teams needing to win the race to get its hands on the trophy, a tight fought affair was expected.
But despite a good start from Team New Zealand, it was the reigning champion which dominated.
Led by Britain's four time Olympic gold medalist Ben Ainslie, who replaced John Kostecki as the team tactician with the score at 4-1, Oracle roared back in dramatic fashion.
Ainslie is the first Briton to experience victory at the event since Charlie Barr led the American team Columbia to three consecutive victories in 1899,Authentic Patriots Jerseys Sale, 1901 and 1903.
The champagne was in full flow by the time Oracle made it back to dry land with fans in raptures at the side of the port.

"I'm so proud of the boys. We were staring down the barrel at 8-1 but the boys didn't even flinch. It was a fantastic team effort."
Team New Zealand skipper Dean Barker was left inconsolable at the conclusion of the titanic tussle.
He added: "I'm incredibly proud of the team and what they've achieved but gutted we didn't get the last win we needed to take the cup back to New Zealand.
"It's hard to swallow."</html>

Miley Cyrus on 'SNL'- 'Hannah Montana' is dead
<html>Miley Cyrus: 'Weed is the best drug' "Most folks say it was the government shutdown. Others blame Obamacare. But I remember the exact day America ended: it was the 2013 Video Music Awards," Thompson said.
Cyrus was in on the joke from the start, as the camera cut to her being warned not to take the stage by "old Miley," as played by "SNL's" Miley impressionist, Vanessa Bayer. ("I think I'm hallucinating," Cyrus said in a winking joke. "I must've smoked too much ... cigarettes.")
"Old Miley" was there to warn that the VMAs routine "might be too controversial" and hit all the references in the process: Cyrus' revealing costume that could potentially land her in prison; the constant tongue wagging ("I'm having tiny strokes,[http://www.ggfabu.com/thread-5806875-1-1.html Miley Cyrus on 'SNL'- 'Hannah Montana' is dead</ a>, yo!" Cyrus explained); and the stuffed animals as stage props. (Cried one stuffed bear before going on stage, "We shouldn't be doing this! This is for kids!")
But in the end, Cyrus told her old self that while she knows kids look up to her as a role model, she's still growing up herself.
"I'm only 20 years old, I need some freedom to grow up and make mistakes,<a href="http://keyamassociates.com/Patriots-Jerseys-For-Cheap.html" title="Authentic Patriots Jerseys On Sale">Authentic Patriots Jerseys On Sale]," she said. "And no matter what happens, I promise I'll always be true to Miley Cyrus."
Just don't expect her to feel the same way about her former Disney character, "Hannah Montana."
As the 20-year-old said in her opening monologue,Authentic Giants Jerseys Sale, "I don't apologize for my VMAs performance. If I owe anybody an apology, it's the people who make the bottom half of shirts. There are a few subjects I'm not going to get into tonight: I'm not going to do Hannah Montana, but I can give you an update. She was murdered."
And thus began an extremely Miley-heavy episode of "SNL," as she appeared in most of the night's sketches and gave two pared-down performances of her hits, "We Can't Stop" and "Wrecking Ball." While she's made headlines for both the music videos for those songs and her attire while performing them live, on "SNL" Cyrus turned in two tasteful sets that were focused less on her dance moves and more on her voice.
She also provided impersonations of a few famous faces,[http://211.154.164.219:8082/home.php?h=203359&app=blog&id=8112186&user_id=203359 The Holiday Inn by the Vet had terribly sad Christmas sausages, but it was also motivating</ a>, including Scarlett Johansson and Hillary Clinton, but the favorite of the night was her take on Michele Bachmann in a parody of her "We Can't Stop" music video, "We Did Stop (The Government)."
With Taran Killam playing Speaker John Boehner in a tight white tank and matching leggings, the parody was easily one of the night's best sketches.
Sample lyrics: "To my government workers on the furlough, even though you're already paid low: Remember only God can judge us, forget the haters,<a href="http://keyamassociates.com/Patriots-Jerseys-For-Cheap.html" title="Authentic Patriots Jerseys Sale">Authentic Patriots Jerseys Sale], because somebody elected us."
One topic conspicuously missing from the broadcast was any mention of Sinead O'Connor, the singer Cyrus has been over social media.
It all began when O'Connor wrote an open letter to Cyrus last week about her nudity and suggestiveness in the "Wrecking Ball" music video. Cyrus hit back with a tweeted dig at O'Connor's past mental health issues, as well as the infamous moment in 1992 when the "Nothing Compares 2 U" singer ripped up a photo of Pope John Paul II on "SNL."
Yet for all those who waited patiently to see how "SNL" and Cyrus would tackle the back-and-forth -- which on Friday g -- they were left disappointed. Sinead O'Connor wasn't mentioned, in her honor.
Overall, the episode was smooth, light on nudity and mainly twerk-free.
"Hey, look at that," the Huffington Post's Mike Ryan. "Miley Cyrus didn't just play an exaggerated version of herself and she was really good."
For The Hollywood Reporter, Cyrus' episode last week's "SNL" premiere with veteran Tina Fey.
Even weighed in with support.
So why didn't Cyrus incorporate the one dance move that's been at the center of the insane amount of debate she's caused?
Well, "I used to think twerking was cool," Cyrus explained during her monologue. "But now that white people are doing it it seems kinda lame."</html>
Road to the World Series- Oct. 12, 2014
<html>The traffic increases on the Road to the World Series on Saturday, when the Red Sox and Tigers re-enter the fray.
After the Cardinals and Dodgers play Game 2 of their series at Busch Stadium at 4 p.m. ET on TBS, Boston and Detroit will tangle in Game 1 of the ALCS at Fenway Park,[http://mayunwana.com/index.php?title=Redaktor:Kvamafqx9#My_name_is_Nandini_Krishnan.2C_and_I.27m_an_introvert My name is Nandini Krishnan, and I'm an introvert</ a>, set for 8 p.m. on FOX. Amazingly, this is the first postseason meeting between two storied franchises that have been facing each other since 1901 and now have combined for 36 playoff appearances.
The Red Sox come in with the luxuries of home-field advantage and rest, having closed out the Rays in Game 4 of the AL Division Series on Tuesday. The Tigers, on the other hand, outlasted the A's, 3-0, in a Game 5 on Thursday night in Oakland, then hopped on a plane for the East Coast.
"It was a little rough, to be honest with you," Tigers manager Jim Leyland said on Friday. "But probably the best long flight we've ever had,<a href="http://keyamassociates.com/Patriots-Jerseys-For-Cheap.html" title="Authentic Patriots Jerseys On Sale">Authentic Patriots Jerseys On Sale], obviously, for the right reasons. A little tired. A little worn out. But we'll be fine by tomorrow. We'll recoup, had a little workout today and go about our business."
Of course, additional time off isn't the only advantage the Red Sox gained by avoiding an extra game in the previous round. Manager John Farrell also was able to set up his starting rotation just the way he wants it, meaning left-hander Jon Lester will take the ball in Game 1, ahead of righties Clay Buchholz, John Lackey and Jake Peavy.
Current Tigers players have combined to hit .378 in 156 at-bats against Lester, but the veteran also has posted a 2.54 ERA over nine career postseason games.
"You don't really care how your body feels anymore," Lester said of pitching in October. "You're just trying to keep that ultimate prize in front of you and think about that, don't think about how your body feels, just go out there and whatever you have that day."
The Tigers survived their Game 5 on the back of Justin Verlander, who won't be available until Game 3 of the ALCS back in Detroit on Tuesday. But don't worry too much about the Tigers' rotation -- not with AL ERA leader Anibal Sanchez going on Saturday and wins leader Max Scherzer ready for Sunday.
"I feel very confident in him," Leyland said of Sanchez, who had a rough ALDS start against the A's. "I think he was probably a little rusty,Authentic Giants Jerseys Sale, as [Doug] Fister was the other day, it took him a couple of innings to get going. I think he'll be back in the groove now."
Earlier on Saturday, Busch Stadium will play host to an intriguing pitching matchup as the Dodgers try to even the series before it heads back to Los Angeles for Monday's Game 3.

Greece's Golden Dawn- Firebrand right
<html>(CNN) -- They, waving flags in a show of fervent national pride. It is a scene reminiscent of Nazi Germany but this is the Golden Dawn party faithful, and they're in a far more modern setting: Greece, the cradle of democracy.
Golden Dawn's firebrand leader,, captured the fury of an exhausted constituency and won his party 7% of the vote in the last Greek elections.
Now, just over a year later, he is in jail after being accused of running a criminal organization following the violent death of a left-wing hip-hop artist.
Golden Dawn's emergence as a political force was in part a reaction against the political duopoly that had ruled Greece for decades. But other factors, similar to those which have fed the rise of other right-wing movements, played into Golden Dawn's success.
Greece, the weakest member of the eurozone, has suffered harsh austerity measures, a grinding recession and unemployment levels which are now near 30%. It is also the favored gateway for illegal immigrants into Europe, given its long coastlines and geographical position.
Sunset for Greece's Golden Dawn? Golden Dawn, which campaigns on the creation of a nationalist state and has a logo echoing the swastika, found itself a niche.
Golden Dawn leaders in court in Greece It had tapped into the fear of a country overwhelmed by financial crisis and unable to cope with the flood of immigrants across its borders.
Far-right Greek politicians arrested In the space of three years, Golden Dawn went from a fringe party, polling at just 0.3%, to one which won 18 of the Greek parliament's 300 seats. Its support then soared into double digits, allowing it to claim the title of Greece's third biggest political player.
Golden Dawn, along with the, had disrupted the country's cosy political landscape, where power had been traded between the center-left Pasok and center-right New Democracy since the restoration of democracy in 1974.
And, as the government implemented cutbacks, layoffs rose and the Arab Spring fed an increase in immigration, more Greeks found solace in the party's extreme rhetoric. Its influence grew.
The party's volatile membership
But Golden Dawn's members soon proved volatile, attracting headlines for their extreme behavior and violence, particularly against immigrants.
In June last year,[http://sh13.oskoluno.ru/index.php/%D0%A3%D1%87%D0%B0%D1%81%D1%82%D0%BD%D0%B8%D0%BA:Fufnqdlh5#Opinion-_World_worries-_Can_it_count_on_U.S.- Opinion- World worries- Can it count on U.S.-</ a>, the party's spokesman, Ilias Kasidiaris, on live television before going on the run.
Kasidiaris, during a television panel,<a href="http://keyamassociates.com/Patriots-Jerseys-For-Cheap.html" title="Authentic Patriots Jerseys On Sale">Authentic Patriots Jerseys On Sale], threw a glass of water at Rena Dourou, a member of Syriza, after she suggested his party would take the country back "500 years" if they came to power. He then turned on Liana Kanelli, part of the Communist Party of Greece, and slapped her in the face.
Human Rights Watch, which called the partydocumented attacks it said were linked to Golden Dawn members. It noted other members, including Michaloliakos' daughter, were questioned in connection to violence against immigrants.
Very few analysts have difficulty seeing this as an extreme right wing -- not just "radical right," or "far-right" -- organization
Matthew Feldman
The Human Rights Watch report also pointed to the party's calls for anti-personnel landmines along the Greece-Turkey border in the Evros region, which is a common crossing for immigrants into Europe.
Golden Dawn members deny being involved in violence. Michaloliakos reportedly told the courts he condemned any form of violence while others, such as , said the party was defending the country.
However in an interview with the, a Golden Dawn MP, said: "Greek society is ready to have a fight, a new type of civil war.
"On the one side there will be, let's say, nationalists like us and ...Greeks who want our country to be as it used to be. And on the other on side there will be illegal immigrants and ...all those who have destroyed Athens several times in Greece."
Golden Dawn representatives declined to comment to CNN for this story.
But the party's popularity remained high, even as accusations of its violence grew.
Then, last month, left-wing hip-hop musician Pavlos Fyssas, a popular anti-fascist figure with the stage name Killah P, was stabbed to death on an Athens street after a brawl that broke out over a football game.
Police arrested George Roupakias, a 45-year-old Golden Dawn sympathizer, and charged him with voluntary manslaughter.
His, and police moved against the party.
Political party or criminal gang?
Brutal reality of immigrant life In an unprecedented crackdown, police arrested more than 20 members of Golden Dawn, including party leader Michaloliakos and five other parliamentarians, on charges ranging from founding and participating in a criminal gang to blackmail, assault, and murder.
Prosecutors are also seeking to widen the net by asking parliamentary immunity on other Golden Dawn MPs be lifted.
Extremism on the rise in Greece It is the first time since 1974, after a seven-year military junta, that a party leader and serving members of parliament have been arrested.
Fringe views gain popularity in Greece Michaloliakos remains in custody while three other Golden Dawn lawmakers who have already appeared in court -- Ilias Kasidiaris, Ilias Panagiotaros and Nikos Mihos -- have been released pending trial. A fourth, Ioannis Lagos, also remains in custody.
The party's second-in-command, Christos Pappas, who turned himself in saying he had nothing to hide, has also been remanded.
Police released images of the , including a picture of Adolf Hitler with Golden Dawn written on it, Fuhrer-branded wine bottles, guns and weapons discovered at his house. At Michaloliakos' house, police found weapons, ammunition and 43,100 euros cash.
The party has denied involvement in Fyssas' death, with Kasidiaris, in a public statement, calling it a "heinous crime."
Police say Roupakias confessed to the killing after he was arrested, and admitted he had links with Golden Dawn. His phone records are now being examined to see how strong those links are.
As investigations continue, there have been calls to ban Golden Dawn, whose support has dropped, according to a poll in Sunday's Proto Thema newspaper, from 10.8% in June to 6.4%.
The arrested lawmakers will retain their parliamentary seats unless they are convicted of a crime. On September 30, the government also submitted a draft law that,[http://greenpath.puiching.edu.hk/wiki/index.php/%E7%94%A8%E6%88%B6:Utadqsqs7#Greece.27s_Golden_Dawn-_Firebrand_right Greece's Golden Dawn- Firebrand right</ a>, if voted in, would suspend state funding for a party if any of its leadership or MPs were being prosecuted for a felony.
The sudden police move against Golden Dawn has, meanwhile, raised questions about whether it has links with authorities and allegations of , which critics say have never been properly investigated.
Nick Malkoutzis, a contributor to independent political and economic website MacroPolis, said "Greece's authorities have also shown a remarkable tolerance to this extremism."
Malkoutzis said there had been a failure to clamp down on the party's "violent and abusive behavior," allowing it to flourish. It took the murder of a "young, charismatic musician" to force the authorities' hand, Malkoutzis said.
Golden Dawn is not looking so much to the Greek junta for inspiration, but rather to Nazi Germany
Cas Mudde
A Hellenic Police representative told CNN on email, translated from Greek, that the force -- as a state institution -- "should not have any links with any political orientation." However, cases that arise are examined individually, the statement said, and Greece's Ministry of Public Order aims not to have any "shadows" over the police.
Further, the police investigate reported violence but such cases were complex and took time, the email said. The ensuing delays "might lead to wrong conclusions."
Public Order Minister the country was determined to rid its police of "any racist elements."
What does Golden Dawn stand for?
Golden Dawn was founded during the early 1980s by Michaloliakos, who was born in 1957. Its website describes how Michaloliakos studied mathematics at Athens University,<a href="http://softvent.com/images/Giants-Jerseys-For-Cheap.html" title="Authentic Giants Jerseys On Sale">Authentic Giants Jerseys On Sale], before becoming involved in nationalist politics aged 16.
Michaloliakos was arrested in 1974 after demonstrating against the British during the Turkish invasion of Cyprus, the party website says.
It was not the last time Michaloliakos would find himself on the wrong side of the law. In 1979, according to Vassiliki Georgiadou, an Associate Professor of Political Science at Athens' Panteion University, Michaloliakos was sentenced to 13 months for "possession of explosives, after being linked to extremist activities."
In an interview with Human Rights Watch, Michaloliakos said he wanted Greece to "belong to the Greeks." Further, he said, the party members were "proud to be Greek," and wanted to "save our national identity, our thousands-year history. If that means we are racist, then yes we are."
Chaidi, during the January interview with CNN, echoed those comments, saying: "If fighting for my nation means that I get to be called a Nazi and a racist ... then I am."
Merkel: Shouldn't have let Greece in EU Michaloliakos has publicly voiced his sympathies with the country's junta leaders, whom Malkoutzis said the Golden Dawn leader met while in prison.
German FM: Greece needs until 2022 And the links remained strong: According to Dimitris Psarras, author of 2012's "The Black Bible of Golden Dawn," Michaloliakos was appointed leader of the former dictator Georgios Papadopoulos' party EPEN in 1984, before he focused his attention on the then-embryonic Golden Dawn.
Greek unemployment hits record 27.6% The party was founded to "promote Nazi ideology," and "never stopped believing in racism and anti-Semitism," Psarras told CNN in an email.
Matthew Feldman, an expert in fascist ideology from Teesside University, told CNN he believed the party was "very" extreme, as reflected in its swastika-like insignia, paramilitarism and allegations of violence.
"Very few analysts have difficulty seeing this as an extreme right wing -- not just "radical right," or "far-right" -- organization," he said. "Many would also agree with me that this is ultimately a revolutionary, neo-fascist party."
Academic views differ over whether the party can be categorized as neo-Nazi. Feldman said he would be hesitant about putting Golden Dawn in that category given the historic pain inflicted on Greece by the Germans during its occupation in WWII. Its history, he said, would make such sympathies anathema to a nationalist movement.
However Cas Mudde, assistant professor in the School of Public and International Affairs of the University of Georgia, said he regarded Golden Dawn as one of the "few truly neo-Nazi parties in Europe," as evidenced by party literature and Nazi materials.
"Golden Dawn is not looking so much to the Greek junta for inspiration, but rather to Nazi Germany," Mudde told CNN in email.
Greece's authorities have also shown a remarkable tolerance to this extremism
Nick Malkoutzis
Golden Dawn has denied being a neo-Nazi party, although Michaloliakos, in an interview with a Greek TV channel May last year, said
Greek's volatile atmosphere
Greece tripped the eurozone's crisis in 2010, after revealing its deficit was four times bigger than it had previously reported.
It was the first of the eurozone countries to be bailed out,Authentic Patriots Jerseys Sale, before it stumbled into the arms of its international creditors for a second time a year later. Despite implementing austerity measures in return for bailout funds, the country's economy continued to struggle and unemployment rose. A third package of aid is now expected.
The country's as jobs dried up. Despite the cultural pull of family and homeland, many have left in search of work and stability. Some previously interviewed by CNN have told how they have that have been cut while costs have risen.
For those who become marginalized by such an environment, political extremism can exert a pull. According to Psarras, Golden Dawn supporters are those who "think of nothing but revenge. We are talking about people who no longer believe in anything."
The perfect storm of economic pain and political discontent has also created an atmosphere many have compared to that in Weimar, Germany, which led to the rise of the Nazi party.
However, Feldman said while there were some "troubling parallels," the circumstances -- such as the size of two countries, the existence of democracy in Greece and the size of the extremist parties -- were different.
"However bad the Great Recession has been," Feldman said, it "is not the same as millions of dead soldiers across Europe calling out, from beyond the grave, to have their sacrifices justified."</html>

Fuel Fix Companies leading US move away from oil
<html>WASHINGTON Commercial vehicle fleets will lead the United States transition away from oil-based fuels to power cars and trucks, leading business executives predicted Wednesday.
The transformation has already started, with and FedEx partnering in research on electric and hybrid alternatives.
FedEx CEO Fred Smith said he believes electric vehicles will increasingly be used for short-haul, light-duty commercial vehicles, particularly those using next-generation batteries that can store more power. In the meantime, he predicted that natural gas will be .
In particular, Smith said,Authentic Giants Jerseys On Sale, cities are excited about the clean profile of electric vehicles.
Light-duty electric vehicles will take off, he said, These city governments love them for their zero emissions.
Smith and other business leaders were speaking at an energy summit organized by Securing America s Future Energy, a group focused on curbing U.S. oil dependence.
Treasure:?
GE CEO Jeffrey Immelt noted that his company expects to have 15,000 salespeople driving electric vehicles.
What is happening at the corporate level may trickle down to average Joe motorists. Repowering and to support corporate fleets later can be tapped by other consumers.
Beyond infrastructure development, corporate America s turn to alternative vehicles can propel new technology.
Houston-based Waste Management is harnessing gas from its landfills to power more of its fleet, said CEO David Steiner.
We have aheavy-duty fleet we re going to make dependent on natural gas,Authentic Patriots Jerseys Sale, Steiner said, noting that while the fuel is cleaner, it brings plenty of other benefits too.
When you run a (compressed natural gas) truck,Authentic Patriots Jerseys On Sale, you have fewer moving parts, so maintenance actually comes down, Steiner said.
The trucks also run quieter, meaning the rumble of garbage trucks passing through residential neighborhoods at dawn could be a thing of the past. Steiner joked that he s only heard one consumer complaint about the company s shift to CNG trucks, and it was from a customer who depended on the sound of those vehicles as a reminder to get his trash cans out to the curb.
Steiner said another benefit has been capturing previously lost time spent refueling. Vehicles can be powered overnight with a slow fuel like natural gas, replacing potentially 20 minutes of lost worker time refueling with traditional diesel each morning.
Daniel Akerson, chairman of General Motors Co., used the energy forum to announce the company will begin selling a duel-fuel sedan next year that can seamlessly switch from gasoline and compressed natural gas. The two-fuel-tank 2015 Chevrolet Impala would be able to drive up to 500 miles.
Expanding network:?
The existing Chevrolet Volt already effectively has two fuels, in the form of electric propulsion and a backup combustion engine that kicks in whenever power drops below a certain level.
Akerson said the approach ensures the Volt navigates around a major concern for motorists: whether they have the juice to get from one place to another. Range anxiety . . . is the biggest setback to the electric vehicle,<a href="/K%C3%A4ytt%C3%A4j%C3%A4:Fvdxvlyg9#Genesis-_-I_may_draw_my_strength_from_the_ones_I_love-" rel="bookmark">Genesis- -I may draw my strength from the ones I love-</ a>, he said.
The executives speaking in the nation s capital on Wednesday emphasized the promise of natural gas both on the roadways and in factories producing chemicals and consumer goods.
We re in a natural gas and renewables age, observed GE s Immelt.
Immelt said he was confident we have enough natural gas in the United States that we can export the fossil fuel to other countries and support a resurgence in domestic manufacturing.
However a major concern remains ensuring the shale gas revolution isn t strangled by regulation,<a href="?title=User:Ajzlonpw0#Anak_ko_Yan-_Mommy_Ariadni.27s_unconventinal_ways" rel="bookmark">Anak ko Yan- Mommy Ariadni's unconventinal ways</ a>, Immelt said. Most of the oversight is happening at the state level.
China and other countries are eager to tap their own shale gas resources, including some in areas located far from water supplies essential to hydraulic fracturing.
Immelt stressed the amount of natural gas lurking in dense shale formations across the globe.
There s a ton of gas being found, he said. Not just in the U.S. . . . There s a lot in a lot of places in the world.
But billionaire Texas oilman T. Boone Pickens said other countries will struggle to catch up. China and Russia are 13 years behind the U.S. in tapping their shale gas resources, he said, even though they have the right geology.

How was the path to stardom for the Ultimate Female Survivor? Let s take a look at the flight of Jennylyn Mercado s career.
StarStruck s Songstress to TV Host
Jennylyn s background story, which everyone got to know of through StarStruck and Magpakailanman, was at first, the most shocking. But her story made it easy to see why she was so determined to snag StarStruck s top spot. She was palaban all-throughout the competition, no doubt. In the middle of the competition,Authentic Giants Jerseys On Sale, Jen showed promise, and won two challenges. She was especially good in singing, with a voice that had quality as the judges put it. Post-StarStruck, one of the biggest acting projects given to her was her role in Encantadia. The fantasy drama series was dubbed as the grandest,<a href="http://wiki.10bu.com/index.php?title=%E7%94%A8%E6%88%B7:Dwksqivs5#The_hot_new_farming_trend_in_China_is_.E2.80.A6_0" rel="bookmark">The hot new farming trend in China is … 0</ a>, most ambitious, and most expensive production for Philippine television. She played Lira, one of the lead roles in the TV Series, and was known for her quirkiness around the people of Encantadia. Being raised in the modern human world, she had a modern human tongue which was different to the Encantadian s way of speaking. This often times provided comic relief in the drama, and allowed Jennylyn s character to stand out.
On the big screen, Jennylyn s acting was highly recognized when she played Cora in Blue Moon. She won Gawad Tanglaw s Best Supporting Actress Award and Texter s choice Best Actress for taking part in the film. But Jennylyn s most acclaimed acting performance was for Rosario, a Filipino period drama, where she re-enacted the true story of a woman during the 20s. Rosario was a then-unconventional woman who lived according to her own will and desire. Jennylyn was highly praised for playing Rosario, and critics said her performance showed how much she has grown as an actress. Proof of her splendid performance was her Best Actress nominations for the film. Some also said that she has the perfect face for period dramas.
Recently, Jen has branched out to hosting. She was in Prot g , Showbiz Central, and now,<a href="http://softvent.com/images/Giants-Jerseys-For-Cheap.html" title="Authentic Giants Jerseys Sale">Authentic Giants Jerseys Sale], she hosts Sunday All Stars and Anak Ko Yan.

Pierce County students drop, cover and hold on
<html>Two minutes, 17 seconds.
That s how long it took to empty Lake Louise Elementary School of its 350 students Thursday morning.
The Lakewood school joined others throughout the Clover Park School District and all over Washington during an earthquake drill known as the Great Washington ShakeOut.
It tested students abilities to drop to the floor, cover their heads and hold on to their desks and do it all in silence.
The ShakeOut not only included public and private K-12 schools, but also colleges,Authentic Patriots Jerseys On Sale, businesses,Authentic Giants Jerseys On Sale, government agencies, first responders and neighborhood organizations. More than 130,000 Pierce County participants were registered at the event website.
Before the drill began at 10:17 a.m.,Authentic Patriots Jerseys Sale, Lake Louise first-grade teacher Janelle Wood prepped her students for what might happen in a real quake.
If an earthquake happens and the ground is shaking,<a href="http://www.0817zg.com/index.asp" rel="bookmark">Lorna Tolentino, naalala si Daboy sa anak na si Renz Fernandez</ a>, the windows are rattling and the lights are flickering, what do we do? she asked students.
The correct answer, as kids heard multiple times Thursday morning: Drop, cover and hold on to your desk. They also learned what to do if they were away from the classroom.
Wood explained that this was all a drill. But she also told them that practicing for the real thing is important.
I bet the earthquake drill is going to be loud,<a href="http://www.helpinghandmatters.com/activity/p/208017/" rel="bookmark">Love Hotline- First Love</ a>, one boy said.
His prediction didn t come true. Teachers told students to keep their voices at Level Zero. It s a concept they ve practiced since the start of the school year.
And it worked. Students were silent as they gathered on the school lawn. They lined up classroom by classroom, in a pre-designated order. Each teacher held up a green rectangle to show a very pleased Principal Kristi Webster that every student was accounted for.
For many students, this was new.
It was awesome because it was my first time practicing, first-grader Jennifer Valasquez said.
Added classmate Monet Moss: It was fun.
I really like how we got to be on Zero Voice, first-grader Patrick Rawlings said. We were very good at that.

Fitness Apps May Be Unhealthy For User’s Privacy &laqu
<html>MIAMI (CBSMiami)?― Health and fitness apps designed to help with everything from diet and exercise to monitoring health conditions have made gains in popularity.
Bur all of the information entered into those apps could be putting the user s privacy at risk.
Matt Demargel said that fitness apps helped him peddle away 30 pounds.
“The apps have been very critical in helping me achieve my goals,” said Demargel.
He used apps to monitor his weight,Authentic Patriots Jerseys Sale, bike routes and what he ate.
What many people may not know is that apps that ask for personal information often share it with third parties which puts a user s privacy at risk. “I ve made a choice that being that this was going to help me from a health perspective, that I would take the privacy risk,” said Demargel.
Officials said not everyone may be as comfortable with that concept as Demargel.
“I think that’s troubling,No evidence the right has learned its lesson</ a>,” said Federal Trade Commission spokesperson Cora Tung Han. In the health and fitness context,<a href="http://softvent.com/images/Giants-Jerseys-For-Cheap.html" title="Authentic Giants Jerseys Sale">Authentic Giants Jerseys Sale, where consumers are used to thinking about sharing their information in the traditional provider context,Mike Myers expecting second child</ a>,<a href="http://keyamassociates.com/Patriots-Jerseys-For-Cheap.html" title="Authentic Patriots Jerseys On Sale">Authentic Patriots Jerseys On Sale, I think they might be surprised about the collection of information that’s happening.”
Experts said information sharing is all about marketing.
“If you have high-blood pressure and you are telling the app ‘I have high blood pressure’ you should expect you’re going to get an advertisement for high blood pressure medicine,” said Application Developer’s Alliance representative Jon Potter.
The FTC has stepped in and wants app providers to let users know who is tracking them.
“We do look at whether or not apps are honoring what they say in their privacy policies and also whether or not they are living up to what they say to consumers in the app itself about what they’re doing with their information,” said Tung Han.
For personal protection the FTC suggests reading app privacy policies and only proving information that you are comfortable sharing.</html>
Satechi's Smart Travel Router- A world traveler's

The browser-based wizard that appears when you connect to the Smart Travel Router's WiFi would not let me select my network. Although I saw the network name in the wizard, I couldn't get it to let me go to the next step of the setup process.
Next, I thought I'd set this up as an Access Point. I'm going to be teaching an iOS class at a local community college over the next two months,<a href="http://wife.bob.buttobi.net/forum.php?mod=viewthread&tid=12531867" rel="bookmark">Krugman- Economic damage likely to linger thanks to GOP</ a>, and although the college has a WiFi network, it is quite slow. Instead,<a href="http://softvent.com/images/Giants-Jerseys-For-Cheap.html" title="Authentic Giants Jerseys Sale">Authentic Giants Jerseys Sale], I'd like to use a device like this to set up a small network for the class participants. To test this, I connected the Smart Travel Router to my network with an Ethernet cable, then ran through the wizard to set it up. I would suggest to anyone planning on using this for any one of the four WiFi modes listed above that they test it as much as possible before traveling. That way, you won't be trying to figure out the wizard and settings while you're on your trip, and you'll be aware of the process of setup as well as any limitations.
If you already have a travel plug adapter set and just need a small WiFi router, you might want to consider the ($49) as it is even more compact than the Satechi Travel Router.
Conclusion The Satechi Smart Travel Router is a cleverly designed combination of travel plug adapter,Authentic Giants Jerseys On Sale, USB charger and WiFi router that should be a part of every international traveler's kit.

<html>Seattle coach Sigi Schmid doesn t believe there is such thing as a team with nothing to play for.
Some people might point to the Sounders Saturday opponent, FC Dallas, which has two games left in a regular season that no longer includes any hope of extending into the postseason. But Schmid doesn t see it that way.
Guys are playing for jobs, he said. When a team doesn t make the playoffs, players are going to know that there are changes probably coming down the line, so everybody s motivated to go out there and play. It doesn t make the game any easier.
That isn t good news for the Sounders, who still have plenty of conventional goals at stake: playoff qualification, playoff seeding,[http://oviny.com/forum.php?mod=viewthread&tid=2102515 Pepito Manaloto- Mimi, may search warrant-</ a>, the Western Conference title and even the Supporters Shield.
The Sounders three-game losing streak and five-game winless streak has dropped them into a tie for third place in the Western Conference, and they no longer have the advantage of games in hand. They still could end the season with 57 points, which no one in Major League Soccer is likely to beat.
The more immediate goal is wrapping up a spot in the playoffs, which could happen Saturday in a variety of ways. The most straightforward way would be by beating FC Dallas, assuring a playoff spot regardless of other results.
If the Sounders draw, they would still get in if Colorado loses or ties with Vancouver on Saturday, or if San Jose loses or ties at Los Angeles on Sunday.
If the Sounders lose, they would still clinch if Colorado and L.A. both win.
We re still in control of our own destiny, team goals leader Eddie Johnson said. This is what it s like to be a part of the biggest franchise in the league. There s pressure, there s expectations, but at the end of the day we re two points away from first place, and in a perfect world winning both games puts us in position to win the Supporters Shield. But the most important thing is we can t panic as a team and an organization.
Whether Johnson will be on the field to help influence the outcome was one of several personnel uncertainties that lingered as the Sounders flew to Texas. Schmid took an extra-large travel party due to the day-to-day status of Johnson (sports hernia),<a href="http://keyamassociates.com/Patriots-Jerseys-For-Cheap.html" title="Authentic Patriots Jerseys Sale">Authentic Patriots Jerseys Sale], Clint Dempsey (hamstring, shoulder) and Obafemi Martins (groin).
The coach also did not tip his hand regarding his starting goalkeeper, after reserve Marcus Hahnemann replaced previous starter Michael Gspurning in a 1-0 loss at the Portland Timbers on Sunday.
However, Schmid feels there is at least as much uncertainty regarding the Dallas lineup largely because the Hoops know their offseason is only two games away.
If they have some guys who have some nagging injuries who are important players to them, like a George John they might shut them down,[http://www.zjlsjyzx.cn/Review.asp?NewsID=443 Acting, writing, sleuthing with Oscar</ a>, Schmid said. But outside of that, you don t know who s carrying little aches. And you don t know who they re trying to make decisions on. As a coach you re going to throw some players out there who you re trying to make some final decisions on.
Even at that, Schmid figures Dallas will come out as the looser team.
But Johnson said champions depend on physical talent combined with mental toughness, and it is time for the Sounders to assert themselves in both areas.
This is why we re here, he said. Not only for the good times and winning games, (but for) the difficult times too; not only when things are going good, but when things are going bad. We ve got to show as a team the quality we have within this dressing room, and go out there and embrace it on the field.

Scott Boras Calls For Neutral
<html>Boras said the MVP and CY Young winners should be named during a TV specialMLB player agent Scott Boras has "called for something that makes a lot of sense -- having the first and/or second game of the World Series take place in a neutral setting,Redford- Women, young people must save U.S. from men behavin</ a>," according to Nick Cafardo of the BOSTON GLOBE. Having two games to "start the World Series in a warm-weather climate and/or dome" would "create quite a buzz." Boras suggested that the event could include "a big ceremony where the Cy Young, MVP, and other awards would be part of a TV special" in the host city. He calls it "baseball's Oscars." Boras believes the move would "get the corporate world involved much like it is for the Super Bowl," and some of the revenue generated could go to "a pension fund for minor leaguers." The "downside to this would be that fans whose team makes it to the World Series would have fewer games at their venue," while the last five games "would be broken up, 2-2-1." Boras said of using a neutral site, "It would be a gathering place for all of baseball. The team officials would have to show up for the awards and other business. It could be the start of the hot-stove season as it once was. It would bring baseball center stage. It would make the World Series an event, much like the All-Star Game, which is the best in sports. Why not take all of the metrics of that event and apply them to the World Series?" Cafardo wrote a neutral site for part of the Series "wouldn't be that radical,<a href="http://softvent.com/images/Giants-Jerseys-For-Cheap.html" title="Authentic Giants Jerseys On Sale">Authentic Giants Jerseys On Sale," and would "allow for build-up and greater interest in the event." Anthony Castrovince- Cardinals' run highlights right ca
<html>Albert Pujols and John Mozeliak ran into each other at a charity golf outing over the summer. It was a cordial passing of pleasantries between the superstar who built his legend in St. Louis and the general manager who couldn't convince him to stay in St. Louis.
When asked about the encounter recently, Mozeliak didn't offer much in the way of details. But if he spoke to Pujols now, on the verge of the Cardinals' first post-Pujols World Series appearance, two words would be entirely appropriate:
"Thank you."
Indeed, while it's easy to say the Cardinals' remarkable run of success from 2001-2011 -- a run that included three World Series berths and two titles -- wouldn't have happened without Pujols, it's just as easy to say that this latest late-October endeavor wouldn't have happened with him.
In this lead-up to their Fall Classic date with the Red Sox, which begins Wednesday night at Fenway Park ((airing at 6:30 CT on FOX,Authentic Patriots Jerseys On Sale, with first pitch scheduled for 7:07), Mozeliak and the Cards have rightly been praised for moving full steam ahead in the wake of losing one of the greatest sluggers the sport has seen. It is a credit to "The Cardinal Way" and the shrewd moves made by Mozeliak and Co. -- including the hiring of Mike Matheny to replace another superstar in manager Tony La Russa -- that the post-Pujols era has included a seven-game National League Championship Series appearance last year and now a legit chance to win the franchise's 12th title.
But you can't look at the composition of this Cardinals roster without getting the sneaking suspicion that none of this stunning success would have been possible had Pujols signed the dotted line and stayed in St. Louis.
As some of us suspected at the time Pujols agreed to , Pujols leaving St. Louis was the best thing that could have happened to the Cards.
For one,Authentic Giants Jerseys On Sale, there is the obvious issue that is Pujols' performance the past two seasons. As anticipated, the post-30 decline period awaited even a great player like Pujols, though the decline has impacted his sheer ability to even take the field quicker than most of us presumed or assumed.
Take the 2012 season out of the equation to give Pujols the benefit of the doubt that the first month or so was a major adjustment for him and he still recovered in time to post numbers (.285/.343/.516) that would have been a career year for most players less talented than he.
But in 2013, the most noteworthy number associated with Pujols' season was 34: the number of games he was physically able to perform at first base.
Beset by plantar fascia woes, he played just 99 games this season, 65 at DH. On an American League club, this was a dilemma, one of many that unraveled an Angels team that, for the second straight year, was unable to take advantage of Mike Trout's ascendance and reach the October stage.
On the Cards, it would have been an outright disaster.
Beyond the playing time particulars would have been the payroll ramifications. The Cardinals' final offer for Pujols was believed to be 10 years and slightly more than 00 million, with a decent amount of that money -- reportedly 0 million -- deferred. It was an earnest effort, though it was made quite late in Pujols' decision-making process. Truth be known, the Cards made it clear to Pujols that they weren't willing to sign him to the type of deal that would provide long-term detriment to the rest of the roster, and he would later express bruised feelings over their inability to bend over backward for him.
Still,Authentic Patriots Jerseys Sale, it was a difficult but necessary business stance on the part of the Cards,<a href="/%D0%A3%D1%87%D0%B0%D1%81%D1%82%D0%BD%D0%B8%D0%BA:Iefrhuib9#FedExCup_Playoff_Schedule_For_Next_Year_Reportedly_Upsetting" rel="bookmark">FedExCup Playoff Schedule For Next Year Reportedly Upsetting</ a>, because, even with a significant sum back-dated, they wouldn't have had the long-term resources to nail down the extensions -- for catcher Yadier Molina, staff ace Adam Wainwright and first baseman Allen Craig (who would have remained in right) -- that keep a significant part of their core intact through at least 2016.
"Clearly, by Albert not coming back to the ballclub," Mozeliak said, "we had resources we could redeploy elsewhere. That's just natural."
What's not as natural is to redeploy those resources so well, which is why the Cards have earned every accolade being tossed in their direction right now.
Freed from a decade's worth of potential contractual commitment to Pujols, Mozeliak wisely took a short-term chance on Carlos Beltran. Unlike Pujols, whose physical issues have leaped to the forefront, Beltran's physical concerns have retreated to the back-burner, allowing him to become the Cards' answer to Mr. October in this NL pennant run.
No, we don't know exactly how the fates would have aligned for either player had Pujols opted to stay. But what we do know is that Beltran wouldn't have been with the Cardinals in that scenario, and we know his production has ensured that the Cards have not pined for Pujols' plate presence one bit.
Last but not least, on the long list of reasons why the Cards have proven to be better off without No. 5, is No. 52: Michael Wacha.
The Cards picked up Wacha with the 19th pick of the 2012 First-Year Player Draft and have watched him blossom -- quite quickly -- into an October sensation.
"We did realize we had this," Mozeliak said. "We identified the guy we wanted, got him, but to see him doing what he's doing, a year removed from college, it's amazing."
Again, an expert application of resources on the part of the Cardinals. And it's worth remembering that the only reason they had that 19th pick in the first place is because the Angels forfeited it when Albert came aboard.
Hey, none of this is meant to pile on Pujols and the Halos, who are still in the early stages of a long marriage together. A healthy Pujols would still be a dynamic weapon, and the Angels, even with his salary creeping past the 0 million mark next year and continuing to rise through 2021, are a big-market ballclub with the ability to build themselves back into a winner.
But the Cardinals are a mid-market team with a budget, a club that can't afford a contractual albatross or an aging position player prone -- however briefly -- toward DH duties. They were right to approach the Pujols negotiations with their head and not their heart,<a href="?title=Kullan%C4%B1c%C4%B1:Kychsgnt8#2014_Bentley_Flying_Spur_.E2.80.94_a_Ritz_Carlton_on_wheels" rel="bookmark">2014 Bentley Flying Spur — a Ritz Carlton on wheels</ a>, they were fortunate that the Angels went to such great extremes to pry him away and they were savvy enough to take advantage of every resource his departure opened up.
In baseball history, there might not be a better example of a club making a clean break from a homegrown superstar who ultimately opted to sign elsewhere. Pujols hasn't been a member of the Cards since Game 7 of the 2011 World Series, but it's pretty clear his absence had a huge impact on their ability to get to Game 1 here in 2013.</html>
