Southern clarifies media policy
<html>Southern University football coach Dawson Odums has decided only three players will be made available to the media until at least Oct. 5.In an earlier story, The Advocate said that policy would cause the newspaper to give minimal coverage to Southern football. The story should have said that Southern s decision will limit the ability of The Advocate to provide much of its standard coverage. That s something we ve got to live with,Celebrity Baby Boom

Celebrity Baby Boom, Southern Athletic Director William Broussard said Thursday. That s the consequences we ll take. Last week, Southern linebacker Anthony Balancier was quoted by WAFB-TV,Jets Brandon Moore Jersey, Ch. 9,NFL Jets Jersey, as saying Northwestern State was horrible. Northwestern State players and coaches acknowledged they used that statement as motivation while blasting Southern 55-14 in Natchitoches on Saturday.Given that the team is 0-2 and entering a crucial stretch to start Southwestern Athletic Conference play, beginning with a home opener against Prairie View on Saturday, Southern subsequently reduced access to its players to all media and suspended Balancier for the first quarter of the Prairie View game Saturday night.Southern coaches were disappointed that a senior and a team captain would say something derogatory about an opponent and were frustrated that the comment may have affected how the team played at Northwestern State,Custom Jets Jersey, Broussard said.To that end, Odums wants his team to concentrate more on improving as a football team than on any media obligations, Broussard said. This is not going to be something permanent, Broussard said. This really, truly is an identity crisis we need to solve. The Advocate traditionally has player feature stories that run in the print edition on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays and has an opponent feature story that runs on Fridays. In addition, there are sidebars to the main game story which run on Sundays. Those stories rely on player interviews.</html>
Police Chief Flynn favors discretion over zero 0
<html>Before Flynn was Chief I had my garage broken so I often I stopped locked it, the mower/blower stolen and plenty of the pink flamingos from the yard simply vanished. In none of those crimes did I feel personally violated. It was just stuff that was insured.
When my home was broken into by a person that turned out to have a long and very violent criminal history where nothing was really taken that incident terrified me. A family day trip to North Fork's wineries
<html>Tuesday September 10, 2013 2:00 PM
By Photo credit: Kerry Hartranft | Seated at the picnic table at Baiting Hollow Farm Vineyard are our seven grandchildren, who range in age from 10 to 4, and our daughter Tracey, who was celebrating her "thirty-something" birthday. (Aug. 14, 2013)
It’s been a family tradition for the past decade to head out to the East End of Long Island, more specifically, the North Fork’s wineries, to celebrate my daughter’s birthday. We started doing this before our seven grandchildren were born,Craft breweries give Madison a heads up among college footba, cheap basketball jersey, so we've tailored this annual day trip to make it enjoyable for them, too.
We caravanned in three cars with a designated driver in each vehicle. This was an easy choice for Papa Kurt, my husband, as he isn't a wine lover.
Our first stop was the (2114 Sound Ave., Baiting Hollow). We enjoyed a pre-packed lunch from home at the outside picnic tables. After lunch, the gals went inside for wine tasting and the guys stayed outside in the picnic area with the kids, who amused themselves by playing hide and seek.
Our next stop was (6025 Sound Ave., Riverhead). One enters through a really well put together gift shop loaded with wine-themed chotchkes — not a good place to parade through with seven youngsters. We quickly brought the kids outside to the petting zoo area in the back of the vineyard, which kept them occupied with a variety of animals — turtles, goats, pigs — while some of the adults did more wine tasting.
Further on down the road is (715 Sound Ave.,Watchdog Update, Mattituck). As the ladies toasted the birthday girl and shared a bottle of bubbly, the kids, their dads and Papa Kurt had fun at the Barnyard Adventure ($7.95 per person during the week — buy five tickets get the sixth for free), which included a pedal cart track, Barnyard Bounce, Charlotte’s Web, Goat Mountain and Bunnyville. Their petting zoo had goats, sheep, cows, pigs, and baby chicks. The kids loved this place.
The last vineyard we visited was (37654 Rte. 25, Peconic). As I had my fill of wine, I sat out for this tasting and stayed with the kids at yet another petting zoo.
Since there were 16 of us, our dinner reservations were made in advance at (47 Front St.,where to buy nfl jerseys, Greenport). It’s kid-friendly with prices that won’t break the bank. The menu is simple and the food is good.
Further down the street is a little toy store that has an assortment of rubber ducks in its front window. The kids look forward to checking out the duck assortment and making their annual purchase. One of my granddaughters wanted a unicorn duck, and she found one there.
Next on the agenda was the in Mitchell Park (Front Street, Greenport). It’s $2 per ride or 15 rides for $20, with a free ride to the lucky one who grabs the brass ring — and one of my granddaughters did! This is the highlight of the trip for the kids. After three or four rides, where to buy cheap nfl jerseys, we headed off to Flavors Dessert Café (216 Front St., Greenport). There are mini-rides and pinball machines to entertain the kids while the adults purchased ice cream for them.
It was a perfect day in many ways. The kid were on a sugar high from the ice cream, but quickly quieted down and fell asleep for the remainder of the ride home. We’re all looking forward to our trip to the North Fork next year.

Sen. Tammy Baldwin, Sen. Ron Johnson take different tacks on
<html>Washington U.S. Sen. Tammy Baldwin (D-Wis.) declared her opposition Tuesday to granting President Barack Obama congressional authority to take military action against Syria, saying America must not act alone.
In something of an unusual twist, U.S. Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.), who only last week cast a vote in committee against authorizing military force against Syria, told reporters he hoped that nobody in Washington would do anything to undermine the very credible threat of such a military strike in order to push a possible diplomatic solution to the crisis.
Baldwin announced her decision in comments delivered on the Senate floor. Her statement came just hours after Obama made a rare visit to Capitol Hill to attend separate closed-door luncheons with Democratic and Republican senators as part of his campaign to win congressional approval of a resolution on Syria.
Just minutes before she went to the floor, Baldwin said, she also spoke to the president by telephone to ask him several questions she had hoped to ask during the earlier luncheon.
The use of chemical weapons is a global atrocity, and it demands a global response, cheap baseball jersey, Baldwin said in her floor statement. That is why I oppose going to war in Syria.
The key for Baldwin was the possibility of acting alone. She described the alleged use of chemical weapons against the Syrian people by President Bashar Assad's regime as morally reprehensible and a serious violation of long-standing international law, adding such weapons are truly barbaric in nature. Baldwin commended Obama for his decision to seek congressional authority before launching a military strike against Syria.
But, I strongly believe that our response to this situation must not be a unilateral military action, where to buy nfl jerseys, she said. This is not America's responsibility alone. And it is not in our interests to set the precedent that it is our responsibility alone.
Baldwin said a better response is to allow the United Nations or other international institutions to deal with crimes against humanity.
Given the fast-changing developments involving Russia and others, she said action on a congressional resolution authorizing military force against Syria should be put off.
Asked whether Obama has the legal authority to order a military strike against Syria without receiving approval from Congress, Baldwin said Obama took the right step in seeking congressional authority because of the lack of an immediate threat against the U.S.
Johnson disagreed, saying he believes the president has the authority to approve military action against Syria regardless of what happens in Congress. He said he repeatedly will state his opinion as a way to bolster the credibility of the threat against Syria. He said he voted no in committee because he thought the resolution was rushed.
Let's push the opportunity we have right now on the diplomatic front,Christian Schneider, Johnson said, speaking of the development that involves a proposal taken up by Russia to get Syria, cheap basketball jersey,End zone addition should pump up volume at Lambeau, its close ally, to turn its chemical weapons over to international control.
Johnson pinned his hopes on such a plan working and then leading to some kind of negotiated settlement that will replace Assad with a coalition government.
That's what we really need to do, he said. We don't want a failed state in Syria.
Asked whether Obama's visit helped boost the president's credibility among Republicans, Johnson responded by describing the president's current request as practical.
I know I voted no in the Foreign Relations Committee, but I always said I've got an open mind, he said. I want to look for a real strategy.</html>

Benji Marshall officially ruled out of Kiwis, Rugby League W
<html>Benji Marshall's impending code swap to rugby means the former Kiwis captain has ruled himself out of the rugby league World Cup in October.
Marshall last month signed a two-year Super Rugby contract with the Blues, but remained in the Kiwis 38-man wider squad. However, he is not in the new 17-strong train-on squad named on Tuesday, with convenor of selectors Tony Iro confirming Marshall has told selectors he won't be available for the World Cup in France and England. "We're naturally disappointed to not have Benji available for World Cup selection, but we understand the circumstances and wish him well," Iro said. "He'll always be a Kiwi brother and he has done wonders not only for rugby league in New Zealand, where to buy nfl jerseys, but the game in general." Iro said Marshall was a key part of the Kiwis team that won New Zealand's first ever Rugby League World Cup in 2008. "He followed that up with a starring role, as captain, in our 2010 Four Nations win. He'll be missed, but we believe we have players in the halves that are ready to deliver in this World Cup tournament." Marshall debuted for the Kiwis in the 2005 Anzac Test and played 27 Tests, including 19 as captain. The 17 players named have been chosen from the eight clubs that won't feature in the NRL play-offs this year, with eight coming from the Warriors. The national selectors - Richie Barnett, Ivan Cleary, Stephen Kearney, Tawera Nikau and Iro - will add to the squad in the coming weeks as teams are eliminated from the NRL finals. A Kiwis squad of 24 for the World Cup will be named on October 8. The squad has a warm-up game against the Cook Islands in Doncaster on October 20, before they open their World Cup defence on October 27 in Warrington against Samoa. What would happen if Peyton Manning was still the Colts QB-
<html>Peyton Manning will win his Indianapolis homecoming on Sunday night, where to buy cheap nfl jerseys, according to . In those matchups, where to buy nfl jerseys, the Broncos win 67% of the time, by an average score of 33-26.
Now, we all know Peyton left the Colts and signed with the Broncos last year. But what Prediction Machine presupposes is, what if he didn t? If Manning and his Indy replacement, Andrew Luck, were to switch teams, cheap baseball jersey, I d assume the Manning-led Colts would win more of those games. I d be wrong.
(AP) This isn t to say Luck is better than Manning, just that Manning s value is greater to the Broncos. writes:
Switching quarterbacks,Mathematician comes up with equation for perfect p, the Broncos (with Luck) average 11.3 wins and 4.7 losses. The Colts (with Manning) average 9.8 wins and 6.2 losses. The Colts have their quarterback of the future in Andrew Luck but Manning, with his level of play, is worth 0.5 a win on average over Luck to the Colts this season and 2 wins to the Broncos.
The Prediction Machine makes the assumption that Manning and Luck would switch right now. But what would happen if Manning had never left Indy and the Broncos somehow got Andrew Luck in the 2012 draft? (I don t know how this would have happened,Troy Aikman's Hot Reads- Manning 'deserves better' from Irsa, just roll with it. Maybe it was a Tebow-involved miracle?)
In that case, it s impossible to factor in those intangibles Jon Gruden so loudly discusses every time there s a live microphone within 500 feet. Manning s Broncos receivers are clearly better for having played with him for 22 games, while Luck s receivers would have also benefited from playing with the longtime NFL veteran. Would Wes Welker be as effective with Luck? Would Reggie Wayne be putting up video game numbers with Peyton 2.0? Who knows.
The Prediction Machine has the Broncos and Colts both making the playoffs in both the current NFL and in the theoretical one in which Luck and Manning switched teams. And though it didn t run the simulation, we re just going to assume the Peyton-led Broncos or the hypothetical Peyton-led Colts will lose early in any simulated playoffs. That s just science.</html>
Redskins' Meriweather responds to Bears' Marshall
<html>ASHBURN, Va. (AP) -- After saying he's going to take peoples' knees out to avoid another suspension for hits to the head, safety struck another blow - declaring that people who beat their girlfriends should be kicked out of the league.
Meriweather's comments were a retort referencing the checkered domestic violence past of Chicago Bears receiver Brandon Marshall,How one B.C. court case could make evicting troublesome cond, who last week suggested that players such as Meriweather should perhaps be taken out of the game completely to make the game safer.
Everybody got their opinion, Meriweather said Monday. If he feel like, you know, I need to be kicked out of the league, I feel like people who beat their girlfriends should be kicked out of the league, too. You tell me who you'd rather have - somebody who plays aggressive on the field, or somebody who beat up their girlfriend?
Marshall's career has occasionally been overshadowed by off-the-field troubles, including multiple arrests following confrontations with a girlfriend when he was playing for the Denver Broncos. None of the arrests led to a conviction.
Marshall declined comment when approached by reporters in the Bears' locker room on Monday. Shortly after Meriweather's comments, cheap baseball jersey, he tweeted: There is only one way to avoid criticism: do nothing, say nothing, where to buy nfl jerseys, and be nothing.
Marshall addressed the matter briefly later in an appearance on ESPN 1000.
He actually reached out to me last week, and I told him that I was more concerned about him and his health, Marshall said, because I think a few weeks before our game I saw him lying on the field just out cold. It was a scary situation. I never want to see him or any player laid out like that.
As far as what he said today, you can only pray for someone with those feelings. So that's all I have to say about that.
Monday was Meriweather's first day back with the Redskins following a one-game suspension for multiple helmet-first hits against defenseless receivers, including two in the Redskins' win over the Bears last week. One of the hits was against Marshall in the end zone on an incomplete pass in the fourth quarter.
Meriweather, who was fined for a helmet-first hit against the Green Bay Packers earlier in this season, was initially suspended for two games by the NFL. He had the sanction cut in half after an appeal.
Asked if he plans to change how he plays, Meriweather said: I guess I've just got to take people's knees out. I'd hate to end a guy's career over a rule, but I guess it's better (for something to happen to) other people than me getting suspended for longer.
You've just got to go low now, where to buy cheap nfl jerseys, he said. You've got to end people's career. You've got to tear people's ACLs and mess up people's knees now. You can't hit 'em high anymore.
Asked for his reaction to Meriweather's comments about aiming for the knees, Redskins coach Mike Shanahan said: I'm not sure if I would have used those choice of words.
Brandon knows that he's got to go lower, Shanahan said, or he's not going to be playing in the National Football League. ... Now the safeties have to go lower. It's just part of the game. Nobody's going to try to hurt anybody. But if you're going to err on the side of caution you'd rather go low than you would high.
Meriweather said earlier this season that he had changed his approach to hitting receivers, yet he was still getting flagged.
I just have to change more now, he said. They told me to use my shoulder; I used my shoulder - I still get fined. They still say I used my head. ... Everybody is looking at the tape and saying, 'Oh, he's a dirty player, he's this, he's that,' which I get, but the thing about it - go look at the tape. I didn't use my head in either hit,‘I feel guilty about being a sexy model’, and I'm moving on from it.
Meriweather conceded that he did launch himself at one of the defensive receivers against the Bears, another no-no as the league tries to cut down on injuries.
Meriweather said attacking receivers' knees will require some practice.
Once you do something so much, it becomes habit, he said. And I think if in practice I simulate going low, I think it'll become habit and I'll be able to do it in the game.
