Chicago hacker sentenced

<html>In a lengthy statement to the court, Hammond, part of a loose band of politically motivated hackers known as Anonymous, said he knew what he was doing was illegal but had become frustrated with the ineffectiveness of peaceful demonstrations. "I have tried everything from voting petitions to peaceful protest and have found that those in power do not want the truth to be exposed,Going postal in the coastal Going postal in the coastal Going postal in the coastal Going postal in the coastal," Hammond said. "When we speak truth to power, we are ignored at best and brutally suppressed at worst." But U.S. District Judge Loretta Preska drew a sharp distinction between Hammond and activists such as the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. or Nelson Mandela. "There's nothing high-minded or public-spirited about causing mayhem," Preska said. Prosecutors said Hammond hacked into more than half a dozen secure sites to cause what he called "maximum mayhem." His most high-profile hack came in December 2011 when he stole at least 200 gigabytes of confidential information from Stratfor, a private Texas intelligence firm. Thousands of employee emails were released to WikiLeaks and posted over a series of weeks, cheap Saints jerseys free shipping, exposing a host of secret operations Stratfor was conducting, cheap Saints jerseys china, from tracking the Occupy movement on behalf of the U.S. government to corporate spying for heavyweights such as Dow Chemical Co. and Coca-Cola. One of the hackers who helped set up the takedown of Stratfor Hector Xavier Monsegur was working undercover for the federal government,Saints jerseys cheap, leading to Hammond's arrest at his Bridgeport home in March 2012. In asking the judge to sentence Hammond to time served, his attorneys noted that three of Hammond's Anonymous co-conspirators who were charged in Ireland and Britain all received less then three years in prison after pleading guilty. But unlike those hackers, the judge noted, Hammond had a prior conviction for a similar crime. In December 2006 he was sentenced in Chicago to two years in prison for breaking into the website of a conservative activist group and stealing credit card information. "I still believe in the importance of hacktivism as a form of civil disobedience, but it is time for me to move on to other ways of seeking change," Hammond said in his statement. Johnson makes case as 1 of the all

<html>comments

HOMESTEAD, Fla. It took Jimmie Johnson just 13 races into his rookie season with Hendrick Motorsports to prove to his team he was a rare talent.

He had just won at Dover for his second victory in four weeks and was debriefing with crew chief Chad Knaus when he brought up a sensation he felt in the car that day that he was certain came from wind blowing through a gap in the grandstands. It was remarkable insight, Knaus said, from a driver who understands very little about the setup of a race car. "He can feel the car. He can be one with the car," Knaus said. "I know that sounds foolish, it sounds weird. But, seriously, go to a surfer and ask him about his surfboard. Go to a snowboarder and ask him about his snowboard. Go to a skier, ask him about his skis. "When they're able to get in that position, and they feel the car, understand what the car is going to do, it's pretty amazing. Jimmie can really do that. He feels what's going on." Knaus went so far as to claim Johnson does things in the car "most mortals can't." His resume supports that claim. Johnson continued his romp through the NASCAR record books Sunday night by winning his sixth championship in eight years. With only the mark of seven titles won by Richard Petty and the late Dale Earnhardt ahead of him, Johnson is making a solid case to be considered one of the best to ever climb into a race car. It's a debate he wants no part of, shrugging in his champagne-soaked firesuit Sunday night that those conversations can wait until after he's done racing. There are some who believe Johnson is a product of his environment, and he wins because he drives for mighty Hendrick Motorsports in a car prepared by Knaus, a crew chief so laser-focused on the No. 48 Chevrolet that it's not always evident if he finds any joy in his job. There's also an argument that Johnson's titles stem from the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship format, which debuted in 2004 as a 10-race playoff. It replaced the decades-old system of crowning a champion based on an entire season, and Johnson reeled off five consecutive titles beginning with Year 3 of the Chase. Indeed, under the old scoring system, cheap Saints jerseys china, Johnson would not have won titles in 2007, 2008 or 2010. But that's not his problem. He raced under the rules at the time, on the same playing field as everyone else on the track the same as Petty did during his heyday, and Earnhardt during his time. As far as Petty is concerned, the debate is pointless. "All I can say is Earnhardt did his thing in his time against his competition. I did mine against my competition, and he's doing his thing against his competition," Petty said. "We didn't compete with each other. He wasn't there to race against Richard Petty or Earnhardt, cheap Saints jerseys, and we didn't have to race against Jimmie Johnson, either. "You can't compare. It's not apples and apples. It's apples and oranges." Petty is right, it is very difficult to compare. But Johnson has very much earned the right to be part of the conversation by winning his six titles faster than Petty and Earnhardt,5 ways to avoid the biggest legal pitfalls of running a startup 5 ways to avoid the biggest legal pitfalls of running a startup 5 ways to avoid the biggest legal pitfalls of running a startup 5 ways to avoid the biggest legal pitfalls of running a startup, by becoming the youngest driver at 38 to reach the mark, and by winning 30 more races (he has 66 total Cup wins) than any other driver in the last 11 years. "I don't think he wants to try to prove it to anybody else, he just wants to prove it to himself,High School OT.com_0 High School OT.com_0 High School OT.com_0 High School OT.com_0," team owner Rick Hendrick said. "I've never seen anyone that works any harder and is any more committed to his physical conditioning, from the way he eats at certain times of the year, when he gets into the Chase, the way he works out. "He doesn't have to run over people. He doesn't have to go out and brag about what he's done. He just shows up, does his job. Sooner or later people have to say, 'You're the deal.'" Yet Johnson still fights a stereotype among many stick-and-ball types who don't respect what he's done. The most recent slight came from retired NFL quarterback Donovan McNabb, who was asked on a Fox Sports program to rank Johnson against other athletes at the top of their game. McNabb dismissed the driver as "absolutely not an athlete" because "he sits in a car and he drives, that doesn't take being athletic." Fellow drivers from various series rallied to Johnson's defense, and NASCAR fans berated McNabb on social media. Johnson said very little on the topic, even after winning his championship. "Yes, I am an athlete, and so is every driver in one of these race cars," he smiled. Ironically, Fox Sports rival ESPN will have Johnson sit in as host Tuesday night for SportsCenter, an appearance being touted as "the first athlete to guest host." He deserves the nod, as his accomplishments rank as high as any other current athlete. Derek Jeter and Kobe Bryant have five team championships, which Johnson has now surpassed. He's tied with Michael Jordan, who for two years has ribbed Johnson that he had one more ring than the driver. While Roger Federer won 16 Grand Slams in eight years, and Tiger Woods won seven majors in four years, Johnson has won all of NASCAR's "crown jewels." He's won two Daytona 500s, four Brickyard 400s, Coca-Cola 600s and All-Star races, and two Southern 500s. There are only five active tracks on the schedule where Johnson has yet to win, and one of them is Homestead, where he's traditionally playing it safe and trying to wrap up a championship. Knaus, who opined Sunday night that if not for midseason rule changes in 2012 the team "would have waxed the competition," believes the current crew he's assembled around Johnson has yet to reach its full potential. Johnson doesn't dare dream of what other goals he might accomplish or where he'll rank when it's all said and done. "It's not like me to think in that light. It's just not me," Johnson said. "I guess I need to open my mind to it because the numbers speak for themselves. I find myself in a touchy situation at times where my quiet approach can be looked at as arrogant or cocky, and that is the furthest thing from the truth in what I'm trying to portray. "I'm just trying to say the right things and keep my mind in the right space. I haven't let a lot in, and it's led to more success. It's kept my work ethic intact, kept me honest and humble. I like that about myself. I really, really do. I don't know if I want to open my mind and let it in, where I stand in the sports world. It's not time for that in my eyes."Copyright 2013 by The Associated Press. All rights reserved. At this pace, women executives in Chicago won't get parity f

<html>"Eighty percent of all new board seats are being filled by men," said Suzanne Bettman, chair of The Chicago Network, a group of influential women in Chicago business, and general counsel at printing company R.R. Donnelley Sons Co. "You can't make progress to parity with that fact. These jobs these board jobs turn over very slowly." The rate of progress for women at the top of corporate Chicago has been so slow the network opted not to release to the media last year's report. "There was no news," Bettman said. Two numbers stood out this year. The first was a positive finding that the number of female board members at the Top 50 companies is at the highest level since the network began its census in 1998. That's 91 women, or nearly 17 percent of the total. Still, the number of female executive officers fell to 74 and is well below the peak of 94 in 2005. The more than 20 percent drop has the woman who oversaw this year's census baffled. "Is it surprising? I guess the answer is, 'Yes,'" said Gloria Santona, cheap Saints nike jerseys, McDonald's general counsel. "I can't tell you why. Or why I think it is the way it is." The data, compiled pro bono by Deloitte Consulting, is based on each company's 2012 fiscal year filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission, and so the situation in any of the companies' executive ranks could have changed. Also, each company picks who it classifies as an "executive officer," so some have more than others. Ventas, for instance, cheap Saints jerseys free shipping, reported that it had six executive officers, while Dover Corp. reported 18. But Ventas and Dover reported that they had one woman each in their executive pool. Given that the senior ranks of any corporation extend beyond the very top "executive officers," Bettman said that the network's data on company leadership "wasn't the full story. Let's hope the full story is better. But I don't know." Among this year's bottom performers were truck-maker Navistar International Corp.; insurance company CNA Financial Corp., which is controlled by the Tisch family of New York; fertilizer company CF Industries Holdings Inc.; and transportation management company Hub Group Inc. These four companies had no women on their boards, and that remains true today. Meanwhile nine companies reported no female executive officers, with Navistar and CNA also making this list. The other seven companies were General Growth Properties, Packaging Corp. of America, Mead Johnson Nutrition Co., LKQ Corp., Old Republic International Corp., Sears Holdings Corp. and Catamaran Corp. "We're not satisfied with the current state," said Jim Spangler, chief communications officer at Navistar. "And we recognize we need to do a better job recruiting and promoting women and minorities to our senior ranks and at the board level. Troy Clarke took over as CEO in April, and this is a top priority." Clarke can pick and choose his team. But Navistar's board is dominated by billionaire Carl Icahn and Mark Rachesky, both activist investors who control four board seats. The company previously had a woman on its board, Diane Gulyas, who retired in December after three years as a director. Navistar replaced her with the managing director of Icahn Capital,No debate among Bears- Cutler, cheap nike Saints jerseys, Samuel Merksamer. Meanwhile, of CNA's 10 executive officers and eight board members, zero are women, according to the census. "CNA has women running many key functions of the company," spokeswoman Jennifer Martinez-Roth said in an emailed statement. "We value the contributions they make to our company, and are continually working to develop new leaders to take on expanded roles in the future." The Chicago Network is careful not to publicly criticize any company, leaving it to reporters to search their charts for the zeros. But they do laud "top performers," such as Mondelez International, led by Irene Rosenfeld; Ingredion Inc., led by Ilene Gordon; Jones Lang LaSalle, whose board chair is Sheila Penrose; Discover Financial Services; and CDW Corp. Gordon cited factors that have nothing to do with gender that often limit women's abilities to advance to corporate boards. At companies without strict age and term limits for board members, there are fewer open seats. Another factor is whether board members insist that their ranks be filled with current or retired CEOs. "If a board insists on that, it will be arithmetically impossible to add more women," Gordon said. "Of the few women who've reached that level at Fortune 1000 companies, they already are on the max number of boards they can be on." In October, Gordon added two women to Ingredion's board: Rhonda Jordan,Fifty Years Ago Today, November 16, 1963, a former division president at Kraft Foods, and Victoria Reich, a former chief financial officer at United Stationers. Four of Ingredion's 12 board members are women. "You have to be open" to diversity, Bettman said. "The trap (companies) fall into is trying to find a replacement that sort of looks and feels like the person they're replacing."

Advertising arch across Clark part of Wrigley renovation

<html>The advertising arch had been talked about during the protracted negotiations about the particulars of the massive renovation plan that went on among Mayor Rahm Emanuel, cheap Saints jerseys china, team owners the Ricketts family and Wrigleyville Ald. Tom Tunney. But Thursday s meeting was the first time it was publicly presented to city officials as an official part of the $500 million development deal. Cubs vice president Michael Lufrano said the advertising arch was agreed to after the team consented to give up a proposed pedestrian bridge over Clark connecting a planned Ricketts-owned hotel to the stadium. Tunney, 44th, opposed the bridge, which would have featured an advertising banner. The arch is just one part of the larger Wrigleyville overhaul package that now heads to the City Council Zoning Committee. The new plan would push back Wrigley Field's right field wall an additional eight feet on top of the seven feet it already is to be moved back as part of a plan aldermen approved in July. The new plan would allow the team to widen the sidewalk east of the ballpark by two feet and narrow Sheffield Avenue behind the ballpark from 33 feet wide to 23 feet wide. The Cubs plan to use the additional space to expand a fan deck in right field and install a bar and grill at the southeast corner of the stadium. There also will be additional concession space below the bleachers. The narrowing of Sheffield, which would eliminate street parking on the block to the east of the park, drew strong opposition from a handful of Wrigleyville residents at the Plan Commission meeting. Jim Spencer, who lives near the ballpark, complained that Emanuel is giving away public property to help the wealthy Ricketts family increase profits. Narrowing our streets and sidewalks and eliminating all of the parking so the Cubs can make money from what is essentially a beer and event deck is unacceptable to us,cheap Saints nike jerseys, Spencer said.

The mayor has proven to be the Cubs most valuable player for 2013 as he has trampled our rights,Indiana State makes believer , trampled our neighborhood, all for the good of the Cubs, Spencer said.

Emanuel introduced the ordinance laying out the most recent proposed changes to the Wrigley renovation package and Tunney endorsed it, giving the revisions a strong likelihood of success when the amended renovation plans go back to the City Council for a vote. The revised plan also eliminates an entrance to the Ricketts hotel that had been slated for Patterson Avenue west of Clark,Illinois Supreme Court moves ,cheap nike Saints jerseys, as well as a hotel deck above the entrance. Guests instead will enter the hotel on Clark. Though aldermen already signed off once on the overhaul of the park and its surroundings, work has yet to begin. Cubs CEO Tom Ricketts says he wants assurances from the owners of rooftop clubs surrounding the park that they will not sue to prevent the team from putting up a large video board in left field and a 650-square-foot see-through billboard in right field that will block some rooftop views. On Thursday, Lufrano would not commit to the Cubs breaking ground on the renovations this offseason. Stay tuned, he said. jebyrne@tribune.com
