Pastor Brent Phillips has known answered prayer since he was very young. He has known crisis and turmoil and has seen nearly impossible circumstances all turned around through prayer. But more than prayer alone, Pastor Brent learned at an early age to trust God in every circumstance. As he looks back, he understands that God used every event in his life to make him into the person he is today.

The Beginning

He was born in Johannesburg, South Africa in 1978. His first answer to prayer came at the age of two, when, in a rage, his father sent him, his mother, and his brother away. As Brent sat on the lawn with his mother, his prayer was that his dog would be kicked out of the house as well, and when the dog came along, too, he knew his first answer to prayer.

By the time he was in Kindergarten, he developed acute asthma that made even walking difficult. For several years, Brent was in and out of the hospital, often missing week of school. But one day his mother came across Isaiah 40:31 (NIV) “…but those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.” She and his grandmother began to claim that verse for Brent. The doctor’s prognosis was that Brent would have to live life in the slow lane, and that he would always be on medication, but his mother and grandmother knew that God was greater than any medical diagnosis.

Brent knew they were claiming the verse for him, so he had the faith that he would be able to do just that: run. By the time he was in high school, not only did he break the school’s 20 year record for running the 1500m, he went on to captain the swim team, the rugby team and hold several student-leadership positions, winning honors for his school in everything. As Pastor Brent looks back on his childhood, he says, “There wasn’t a single day that went by that we didn’t see God intervene in one way or another, whether it was by providing specials on the food we needed, stretching our gas, or providing us with a roof over our heads. Our circumstances in the natural weren’t good at all, but we laughed and loved more in our broken home than families who seemed to have it all together.”

His family was pumped full of stories of ordinary and average people who did amazing and extraordinary feats because of God, and they trusted God to do no less in their lives. This little broken family became a benchmark for other families to aspire to and follow.
