Your own home Office - Designed To Meet your needs
Several years ago I was training of my home within an office I'd designed for myself. With plenty of space, oversized countertops, and specific places for every piece of office furniture and equipment I personally use (I'm highly computer-dependent), I was productive and efficient without sacrificing closeness to our kids. In terms of style, space utilization, and ergonomics, I'd thought of almost everything. Then two things transformed my work setting within fundamental ways; a two-year old plus a four-year old who delighted in if you know Daddy was home all day long. But that wasn't totally unexpected; I'd made provisions to improve the privacy of my office as the children grew. A little planning and some rules about when the office was "off limits" kept what's so great about working at home undamaged.
Thirteen million Americans are running businesses out of their homes, according to the Kauffman Center For Entrepreneurial Leadership (www.emkg.org). To all, forty-five million of us (35% of all U. S. households) work at least part-time out of house offices. Combine those figures using the Herman Miller Company's (www.hermanmiller.com/) projected 10 to 12% annual growth in the home office furnishings market and it is obvious that sooner or later, many of us will have to consider how to integrate this relatively new function into our existing or new homes.
There aren't many solid rules about home business office design; our jobs and lives are unique and can influence each individual circumstance. But a few simple ideas apply almost globally, and will help to guide you towards making the best with your resources. Locating The Home Office Even a well-planned work place won't work if it is located poorly. If you see clients inside your office frequently, and especially if you've got small children at household, separate the office in the home spaces as much as possible. This might mean an absolutely independent office structure, or an existing room having an entrance designed for employ by clients alone. If the office along with home spaces are surrounding, proper sound insulation is really a must.
Building a completely new office structure allows you the most design alternatives, but forces the thought of future use. Will you work at home forever? If not, what will become of the dedicated office? In my home, the old office is "phase two" of its evolution, the kids' "playroom". In phase three it'll be remodeled into a media room for the adults. Design your office to grow and change with a person.
