Alcoholism is absolutely alcohol dependence. If you are an alcoholic you suffer from a compulsion to drink. If you're a smoker, you might be familiar with craving something so strongly that you could not think of whatever else but smoking a cigarette. While you always binge drink, and once it begins to cause issues in your work or school life or with relatives and buddies yet somehow you still drink, is when you've gone on to alcohol abuse.

You should know that there exists a difference between alcohol abuse and alcoholism. The largest differences are that with abusive drinking there isn't a severe craving to drink, neither is there an actual dependence on it. Abusive drinking is really a pattern of drinking that can cause one to not fulfill work, school or home responsibilities, issues that are related to alcohol for instance a DUI and relationship problems that could be due to your drinking. Most alcoholics are alcohol abusers however, not all alcohol abusers are alcoholics.

Knowing somebody who has an actual physical addiction to alcohol and claims they can not function from it, you should try to have them some assistance. Some alcoholics can admit they have a problem and take it upon themselves to obtain help. However a majority is in denial and sometimes need an intervention from family and friends to find the help they should live.
