Adjusting a Wax Ring

De BISAWiki

If there's water slowly leaking across the base of the plumber toilet, or you consistently smell a bad smell in your bath-room chances are the toilet polish band has begun to fail and it is time for it to be changed.

A bathroom wax ring is virtually defined by its name. It's a 1 to 2 inch thick ring of wax, usually found surrounding a plastic funnel. The toilet wax band functions forming a water/air tight seal between the base of the porcelain toilet base and the toilet flange (plastic or cast iron).

The toilet feel ring will breakdown and fail If your toilet stones when it is seated upon, over time. That failure manifests itself in the formation of small water and odor leaks around the base of the bathroom. Injury could occur towards the bath-room floor, if left unchecked and harmful sewer gasses may possibly build-up in the home.

A fresh toilet feel ring should also be changed any time a toilet is removed (e.g. Throughout the installation of the new bath-room floor).

Replacing a toilet wax ring is straightforward to accomplish and can be achieved by the do it yourself homeowner with just a little knowledge and some planning. Replacing a toilet wax band can be done in about 1 hour assuming there are no extenuating circumstances.

The essential steps required to change a toilet wax band begin with emptying the tank and bowl of water and turning off the water supply line. The supply line must also be disconnected from the bathroom.

Next the nuts, attached for the Hold-Down products, must be unscrewed.

The toilet is then lifted off the toilet flange and turned over.

The old toilet wax ring can removed and then be scraped off the base of the toilet, and a floor can be cleaned of any old wax ring residue.

The new toilet wax ring is then pushed onto the base of the toilet and the toilet is then reseated onto the toilet flange.

The point nuts are then re-screwed right back onto the Hold-down bolts and the present line reconnected.

The water supply line for the toilet can then be turned back on and the toilet is back in business.
