Right Place Proper time as a title sums up my career to this point. Ive worked hard in everything Ive done, doing whats felt right, and everything has squeeze into place. Its the sentiment with this album - a body of labor of great pop songs. And Ive gone in a different place again this time around. Olly Murs
Welcome back to Olly Murs, one of the most successful celebrities of history decade. In just 3 years, hes crafted three albums that have produced four No 1 singles (including the platinum-selling Dance Beside me Tonight and latest no.1 smash hit Troublemaker ft. Flo Rida), and a further three Top 20 hits. First album Olly Murs (2010) has gone double-platinum and 2nd album In Case You Didnt Know (2011) is at almost triple-platinum sales. Together with Ed Sheeran and Example, Olly is the only recent male solo star with a sell-out headline arena tour to his name, as well as being a fixture on the main stage of numerous festivals. His new album Right Place Right Time shot to the top of the albums chart immediately on release - giving Olly the biggest week one sales by a male artist in 2012! Olly also managed the rare feat of being the surface of the albums and singles chart simultaneously when Troublemaker hit the very best spot to second week.
Olly has just been announced as special guest on Robbie Williams European Stadium tour - include that to Ollys already huge UK arena tour and its easy to understand that 2013 is associated with him.
You dont get to be such a phenomenon not understanding how you can constantly better yourself - and Ollys third album Right Place Proper time is a set of 12 songs that enhance the remarkable standard hes already set. The choruses are much more catchy, the lyrics much more heartfeltand its classic feel is that of a master singer and songwriter who has the skill to produce tunes for anybody of any age. Olly insists I wanted it to be brilliant throughout, from track to track to track and hes achieved that - choosing potential hit singles is a doddle.
If his previous album In the event you Didnt Know saw Olly establish himself as a songwriter, Right Place Right Time sees him in the absolute top of his game for crafting songs, driving writing sessions with both regular co-writers and newcomers. Ive had really a say, explains Olly. Plus, Ive got another years experience and Im very excited for individuals to listen to the input Ive had. I hate saying the background music is more mature, because I havent changed. But I feel my song writing is stronger and I knew where I wanted to visit being an artist with this album. Ive tried to have from the songs anthemic, and I hope it will open me up to and including wider audience.
Writing sessions began in March, with Ollys initial idea to bring much more of a funk-based Jamiroquai & Maroon 5 feel to his music. I dont wish to accomplish exactly the same style on every album, he enthuses. Id always said I want to perform a Motown album, but after a couple of songs Ill go Lets change it out up. That restless spirit infuses this album too. The funk is certainly there, on incendiary first single Troublemaker, Hey You Beautiful and the fizzing Exactly what a Buzz. But theres a tenderness to these songs too, with Sliding Doors and The One as passionate because it gets in evoking the quest for love.
If its anthemics you would like, one listen to the stunning Army Of Two demonstrates just how much Olly has stepped up on this album. Within the type of Robbie Williams Millennium and George Michaels Freedom, its magnificent at capturing the spirit of togetherness Olly and the fans feel. As Olly explains: I desired to write an audio lesson about my fans that have been amazing in my experience with the last 3 years, within the vein of Take That or Coldplay. It felt amazing penning this song, and that i cant wait to sing it live!
Then theres the haunting Dear Darlin, 1 of 3 songs combined with the One and What A Buzz co-written with Ed Drewett, co-creator of The Wanteds Glad You Came and All Time Low. Another singer from Essex with mates in common, it was natural for that pair to get creative. Being friends helped, as we spoke for a long time before writing Dear Darlin Olly recalls. We sat there all night, groing through old relationships and recalling their scenarios. Its about writing to someone to let them know the way i experience losing someone, and the flipside of that is The One, that is finding yourself in a relationship with someone pushing you away because theyre dealing with a bad time. Theyre not the type of songs youd expect me and Ed to write, as were bubbly characters, but we were able to open up to each other.
The gorgeous One Of These Days is the consequence of Ollys first writing session in LA, with Andrew Frampton, Steve Kipner and Julian Bunetta, the trio behind hits for that Script, Cheryl and JLS. Their studio was in a canyon in the middle of nowhere, grins Olly. Im likely to discover the piano in order to play that one on tour.
But Ollys lively cheek is within full effect too - take a look at Troublemaker, about How theres a girl in every mans life whos a little bit of trouble. Its even the only song to feature a guest - and they dont get bigger than Flo Rida. Im not a fan of getting collaborations with regard to it, Olly emphasises. But Flo gives Troublemaker that extra 10%, the same as Rizzle Kicks did on Heart Skips A Beat. His flavour - both his rapping and the persona - fit the song so well. I decided to guest on Flos album in return. Yet to settle down, Troublemaker perfectly captures the enjoyment side of Ollys life. Its written from experience, he smiles. Im sure a lot of men have had girls in life whove been trouble. You wouldnt normally fancy them, but theres something that fixates you - a glance in their eyes that entices you in. Shes not marriage material, however, you cant help attempting to be around her.
The swagger proceeds Loud And Clear, a kiss-off towards the girl Olly was heartbroken about on his first # 1 single Please Dont Let Me Go and who reappeared within the title track of In Case You Didnt Know. She wasnt there when I needed her and that i really was chop up about this, says Olly. But Im still here, and Loud And Clear is about how Im over her. Ive always liked conversational songs, and this album has some classic Olly idioms inside. Its still just me.
Its a group borne from the confidence of that first arena tour at the start of the entire year, where Ollys natural showmanship meant he'd little difficulty making the often fraught transition from theatre venues. Arenas are the most useful place to be as an entertainer and performer, he smiles. To have 20,000 individuals the palm of your hand to have an hour-and-a-half was incredible, to allow them to hold on your every word, dancing. It would be a opportunity for me to win people over, whether it was girls dragged along by their mates, guys dragged along by their girlfriend or parents looking after their children. It was a challenge to thrill individuals who might possibly not have liked me. Until someone sees you live, they can be proved wrong in regards to you.
Supporting One Direction on their own US tour helped too. They were brilliant guys to be with and it provided some great foundations to really make it there, though its still early days.
Back on our screens with Caroline Flack because the Xtra Factors formidable double act, Olly has rejected innumerable other TV presenting roles to pay attention to his third album. As its title implies, it had been the right decision. Or, as Olly puts it: These are 12 big, big songs. Its a great place to be. Right place, proper time. Right singer, right songs.
