Book Review: Chicken Soup For The 'National Idol' Spirit

The blue isbar chicks Soup For The Soul line has been a runaway success in the book world, over 100 million copies have been distributed global. They've been converted into pretty much every language but Klingon! When you combine this with American Idol, a TV show that garners 60 million viewers a show, and 7 seasons under its belt you've what has to be a sure-fire success.

The method behind Chicken Soup is deceptively simple, quick two or three page actual experiences which can be impressive, and often worry overcoming some misfortune. This structure appeals to non-readers and viewers alike. Many individuals are scared of tackling a 300 page guide, but everyone can manage a few pages.

Chicken A Manhattan project American Idol characteristics vignettes from backstage team, artists and even lovers of the show.

I've to make a confession at this time. I'm probably the only person in The United States, probably even the developed world that has never really saw American Idol! My total amount of information about it was gleaned from overheard conversations between co-workers across the coffee pot. It was not an obstacle to experiencing the book though. The stories stand by themselves, that you don't need certainly to comprehend the display to take pleasure from them.

It is hard to choose a favorite story, several stood out in my mind. Mandisa was a contestant that managed to get to the top 10 finalist record in year 5. Mandisa is excited to to have made it through the audition phase, and her performance is so good that the producers prefer to include it in one of the TELEVISION episodes. She is gathered with her friends to look at the fantastic event air. Her world is destroyed when what is actually shown on TV includes a snide comment from judge Simon Cowell about her weight. 'Are we going to get a larger stage this season'? he inquires of co-judge Paula Abdul.

Mandisa is destroyed. But she gets her revenge. In what could have been a lifetime career ending shift, when next she meets Mr. Cowell beneath the glare of the lights and scrutiny of the cameras rolling she does what I'm sure many contestants which have been on the receiving end-of Simon?s barbed remarks would love to do, she offers it to him with both barrels! A deflated Simon Cowell's only response is to ask her to come back and give him a hug!

Nigel Lythgoe could be the Executive Producer, and his account ends with the sage advice that's relevant to anybody, under any circumstance. 'So, if you're likely to dream, dream in Technicolor. Do not desire in black and white.' How true he is.

Lots of the stories though have little to do with the actual show, the show is just the catalyst. You'll find rags to riches stories, and many of the participants have indeed shot to the spotlight consequently of American Idol. Most although haven't forgotten their humble origins, whether a farm in Iowa, or growing up in 'the jobs' of some urban sprawl. And many have 'returned' in some way, from meeting young cancer people through the 'Make A Wish' base, to gain events, they have done everything.

This is a good book, and one that even I, an admitted American Idol virgin can read and enjoy.
