How To Sing – Inspiration For Teachers And Students

De BISAWiki

Before going to Performance High, I had taken singing lessons from various teachers around Denver. After working with other teachers for over a few years, I had felt that I plateaued and that I needed to find a teacher who knew how to pull my voice out of me. My voice has improved radically in the three months I've been taking lessons at Performance High. My "bridge" (the spot between head and chest voice) was absolute no-man's land for me, and I avoided it like the plague. Now I can sing cleanly through it and have no fear of that zone.

Best of all, no matter where you are in the journey of developing your voice, you're not limited to just onechoice. We don't force you to concentrate on only one element at a time as if you were taking a college course inthat one discipline. As you're ready to add pieces along your path to becoming an excellent singer, you'll befolding in to your lessons the components that are necessary to take you to each new step along the way. Yourgreat, good fortune is that your teacher and vocal coach, the Singing Lesson Expert , doesn't justknow about all these steps, she's done them all!

If you are interested in learning how to sing, then it is advisable to interview prospective teachers. Your research up front pays off down the road. You want a teacher you can communicate with as well as one who can help you develop in a manner appropriate to your vocal style and voice type. Good voice singing lessons stretch your range and build breath control; these lessons give you more tools with which to experiment with as your singing evolves. In sum, good teachers provide the foundation for continued growth and adaptation of your own vocal style over time.

Students are encouraged and expected to play an active role in the learning process. For example, they should read my information on vocal anatomy on the SingWise site in order to better understand the terminology that I will use while teaching, do breathing and any other assigned exercises at home to improve their posture and increase their strength, control and stamina in preparation for the more challenging exercises ahead, do their best to apply proper technique during their rehearsals and private practice times, come to lessons with questions, and discuss with me the areas on which they would like to focus during their lessons.

People sometimes think that voice lessons may not be necessary because they already have a good voice. This could not be more wrong. If an NFL player decided not to practice because he was already good his performance on the field would certainly be hindered. Many of our greatest singers have taken Colchester singing teachers singing lessons. Michael Jackson, one of the best known singers of all time, took voice lessons for over thirty years. Alicia Keys also took music lessons from a very young age. Kelly Clarkson, winner of American Idol has been reported to have said “vocal lessons helped strengthen her live sound”.

I will often stop the student during an exercise or have the student repeat the exercise a few times in the same key in order to address technical or tonal issues or to solidify the technique in that range of pitches. It is also not uncommon for me to have the student switch to another exercise altogether midway through the ascent up the scale if I feel as though the first exercise is not helping the student make the necessary improvements or if the student would benefit more from a change in approach. Sometimes we will return to the original exercise afterwards.
