Tim is struggling to stay over the straight and narrow way, as described for him from the exact same evangelical chief who torments Ruth. The descriptions of Ruth and Tims psychological conflicts are exciting. Theyre both searching for self-worth through someone else. Since their divorces, Ruth and Tims lives have taken divergent paths, but each thinks that they have lost something that one might call religion. Theyre both close-minded, although Tims close-mindedness is constructed from his relationship with the Tabernacle. It was interesting that Tim likened the fellowship of the Tabernacle for the friendship of the rock bands of his youth; both are closed groups that welcome loners who are taught to pity or look down on others who do not fit in. Success contains extra info about the purpose of this viewpoint. Bernard has tried to embrace a Christian life, although his sexual needs for his ex-wife and despair in his second marriage cause him to doubt his piety. Ruth and Tims paths cross at a soccer game where Tim has asked his group, including Ruths child Maggie, to participate in prayer after a victory. Her first conflict led her superintendent and principal to start an abstinence-only sex education class that she lacks the heart to teach. The Abstinence Teacher made me more concerned for the professional wellbeing and skin depth of intercourse educators who work in settings similar to Ruth. A teacher can not teach well when forced to control their own beliefs to protect faculty colleagues from embarrassment.
