Swa cat5e

De BISAWiki

Armoured cat5 SWA is used by structured cabling installers when they need a armoured data cable. A great example of this is installing an IP Camera. Lets say for example outdoors. The first thing you would need to work out is if you need a armoured cat6 cable or a cat5 armoured cable. This is all to do with speeds and feeds. A cat6 armoured cable solution would let you transmit data speeds of up to 250MHZ.

For the IP video camera example, we will use a recent application we helped with. The installer was working at a local school in Manchester. They needed to mount several Axis IP cameras outdoors. There was a part of the installation where the cat5e Ethernet cable would be exposed. There was also parts where it needed to be directly buried. The installer opted to use a Steel Wire Armoured
Cat5e cable (also known as SWA cat5e).

The reason the installer opted for a SWA cat5e option was because it would fix both problems. 1, you can leave the cable exposed, it is protected from UV rays and moisture. It has a thick PE outer sheath, which takes care of this. 2, You can use the cat5 armoured cable for direct burial. In the ground it is protected against machinery. It can also be used to run through ducts. In ducts it is protected against rodents.

You would simply run the steel wirearmoured cat5e cable up to the Axis IP camera. Run the other end to a POE port. This type of cable can be difficult to terminate into a RJ45 port. We advise using an in-line coupler. You would terminate the swa cat5e into one end. Into the other end you would terminate a standard Ethernet cable. The end of this cable would plug into your router.
