ZIP codes are a system of postal codes in the United States Postal Service (USPS) since 1963. Term ZIP, an acronym for Zone Development Plan, [1] is properly written in capital letters and was chosen to suggest that the outgoing mail more efficiently, and therefore more quickly, when senders use the code in the postal address. The basic format consists of five decimal digits. An extended 4 postal code, introduced in 1980, consists of five digits of the ZIP code, a hyphen and four more digits to identify a specific location within a certain area code. The ZIP code was originally registered as a servicemark (a type of trademark) by the U.S. Postal Service, but its registration has since expired. [2] US zipcode database ECs only designated delivery point within the United States and its dependencies, as well as the position of the armed forces. There is no postal code for dedicated e-mail address for foreign locations (except the U.S. military stationed outside the United States) and, therefore, international outbound mail should include the area code in the U.S. shipping address (in many countries and exterior use postal code and they can be put into an external address, usually after the name of province, state or region). The last line from an external address should display the name of the country.
