How Important Are Aviator Sunglasses For Pilots?
Many people choose aviator sunglasses as a fashion statement, but for pilots the choice of sunglasses is a more critical decision, one which should not be used lightly without knowledge concerning the importance of eye security.
There is a large amount of evidence that light, both that which we can see (visible lighting), and light we are not able to see (ultraviolet lighting), potentially can damage any pilot's eyes and can bring about cataracts, macular degeneration, or, in some cases, skin cancer around the particular eyelids.
We all know that will viewing very intense light sources likes the flash from a welder's torch, or viewing a sun eclipse, can cause serious problems for our eyes, or even blindness. Clearly we are all aware that serious eye injuries can occur from viewing welding arcs with virtually no eye protection. Properly protecting our face from these events can prevent problems for our eyes.
For pilots proper eye protection is more important as they certainly are a pilot's most important physical asset. Because of their experience of large amounts of ultraviolet radiation proper aviator sunglasses are essential because of the shape which protects the most important are around the vision socket, preventing harmful rays from reaching a persons vision itself.
Pilots are also confronted with more of the harmful rays from your sun because they travel at higher altitudes reducing how much diffusion light experiences as it travels through the earth's atmosphere to the earth's surface.
