His determination to supporting educational alternatives to the black group could be the continuation of a legacy that began with his grandmother. In trying to keep his family's generational vital of ensuring that other folks are afforded the opportunity to be educated and affluent, Dwayne has gained that position for himself. ANDREA: Notify us about your self and also your family members track record.

DWAYNE: I'm really celebrating my 20th 12 months while in the non-profit sector. I grew up from the South - in Houston, Texas. I'm a 3rd era black school graduate. A lot of my family members customers went to Grambling and Southern College in Louisiana. In fact, one of my first cousins was a previous president of Grambling. I attended public college, Wiley Higher education for my undergrad, and University of Pennsylvania for graduate college. My mom and dad have been business owners, and my mother however operates a small enterprise. My dad is retired from Texaco.

ANDREA: How did you will get involved with the non-profit sector?

DWAYNE: I started out carrying out fundraising to the United Negro Higher education Fund [UNCF] whilst I was in college. From that involvement I used to be elected to be the Nationwide Pre-Alumni Council president, which was the coed fundraising arm. That obtained me enthusiastic about fundraising. When i graduated faculty I planned to function for UNCF, nonetheless they would not seek the services of me mainly because I did not have more than enough practical experience. So I went to work for the United Way, did two years there, after which was recruited to move up the UNCF place of work in Philadelphia. From there I had been "bitten via the bug" and stayed inside the sector.

ANDREA: That's an extended motivation, Dwayne. There have to be a thing driving you. What's that?

DWAYNE: Well, another thing is usually that my great-grandmother was a famed midwife in Louisiana, and she or he donated the land for your to start with black college to get built. I think it goes back again to my household heritage and her determination to education and learning - it truly is from the family's blood. They've all been involved volunteers. My mother serves on many group boards, and my dad would be the chairman of his church board and it has been extremely lively locally. So I believe it comes from staying brought up in the household that may be civic-minded and it has cultivated that in me.

Now, because I went to an HBCU [Historically Black College or university or University] I know the main difference that it will make, and that i would like to see a lot more youngsters get that opportunity. Which is aspect of what drives me to carry on to try and do this - which you'll be able to see the tangible results.
