Beryl Cook is among Britain's most gifted and funny artists.Beryl's pictures feature women of all shapes and sizes experiencing themselves.Born between your two world wars, Beryl Cook ultimately left Kendrick School in Reading at the age of 15, where she visited secretarial school and then in to an insurance company. After moving to London and then Hampton, she fundamentally married her next door neighbor from Reading, John Cook. He was an officer in the Merchant Navy and they bought a bar for a year before John got a job in Southern Rhodesia with an engine company, after he left the sea in 1956. My father discovered portrait paintings by browsing the Internet. Beryl ordered their young daughter a-box of watercolours, and when showing him how to work with it, she determined that she herself really liked painting. John eventually bought her a child's painting set for her birthday and it had been with this that she produced her first significant work, a half-length portrait of-a dark-skinned woman with a vacant expression and large drooping breasts. It had been aptly-named 'Hang over' by Beryl's husband and still hangs inside their home today.
In 1964 Beryl Cook and her husband came back to the UK settling first in Cornwall and then later in Plymouth where, during the summertime, Beryl ran a boarding house for tourists on the seafront. Beryl had now been painting for-a number of years, basing her photographs o-n her everyday observations of individuals around her. By 1975 she had gathered numerous pictures that covered the walls in their boarding house. A friend took away a dozen or therefore and, to Beryl's shock, were able to sell all of them for about 10 each. Beryl was happy and easily increased her production. Articles rapidly appeared in the Sunday Times Magazine, followed by exhibitions at the Portal and Whitechapel Galleries in London. Her first book 'The Works' was published in 1978. Her pictures were then reproduced as handmade cards and limited-edition prints and soon her work had been presented around the world, tickling ribs from Kingston to the Cape, and generating consid-erable popular acclaim.
This popular acclaim is followed closely by serious critical appreciation, especially with the inclusion of her painting in-the fifth Peter Moores display at the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool where she was observed in the context of main-stream modern art, along-side Bridges Riley and Victor Passmore. The newest Glasgow Museum of Modern Art has additionally recently purchased some of her original work, ensuring her a spot in the annuls of British Art.
