Don't feed them.
That may sound obvious, but consider it. Mice need food. Don't leave food out where they are able to obtain it. Cleanup your crumbs. Store dry food in glass or metal containers. Store trash outdoors or even in your garage in metal trash cans. Cleanup any spilled grass seed or plant seeds in your garage. Eliminate possible nesting sites.

Walk across the outside your home to see any openings, however tiny they might seem. Make sure you check carefully around any pipes and around air conditioning unit fittings.
You can seal any openings with expanding foam insulation, caulking, or bits of metal screening or sheet metal cut to suit. You may also use steel wool to shut up any holes, but remember that it will rust and break up with time and can must be replaced periodically.
If you do have mice problems, use traps.
Use traps for mice problems, not poison. The issue with poison is that mice can eat the poison, then crawl with your walls to die. Then you've got dead mice within your walls, which could create a horrible smell. And it is hard to get to the dead mice to get rid of them, since they are between your walls.
The old-fashioned spring traps work nicely, or if you prefer something more humane, you can get live traps. The mouse gets trapped unharmed inside, and you set it free outdoors. Make absolutely certain you release it far from your house. Should you release a button inside your backyard, it's more likely to come back in.
Don't throw away cash on those ultrasonic pest control devices.
Perhaps you have seen these units? They emit a high-pitched sound wave that humans can't hear but rodents can. The sound is supposed to disturb mice, rats, along with other pests and keep the offending articles. But some research indicates they're not a great way how to keep mice out of a home. In a study, researchers put a device right next to a cage of mice. The mice ate, slept, and even bred, without seeming disturbed in any way by the device.
