Alright now you know what a bass' role is and what your job as a bassist is so whats next you may ask? Getting a bass of course. The best way to learn is to find a bass you can use for free. Inquire with friends and family often times there is one laying around completely unused. If you find this consider yourself extremely lucky. Now for those of you who are like me and was not this fortunate there are a couple things to consider. The first is what are you going to be using this bass for?

Have you ever held a bass before? If not, well, I suggest you go to youtube and want clips of bass players. They will show you how to hold the bass properly. The basic idea is to have it either sitting in your lap or hanging from its strap in front of you. Your (typically) left hand will be on the fret board, palm against the back of the neck. Your right hand will be by the "pickups" (the electronic sensor normally located around the middle of the body of the bass). It depends on your bass, what you're playing, and what you're comfortable with.

Practice, practice, and practice even more. This requires you to set some time apart from your daily chores and devote some time towards playing this guitar, that's why its your hobby isn't it? Practice for about half an hour a day and make sure that you have no distractions around you. It is obvious that in the beginning, your arms and fingers will hurt when you start playing. So stretch your fingers and remember, the more you play, the stronger and faster your fingers will be able to adjust with the strings. Start out with the easy notes and then move on to the tough ones.

Another important thing that you have to keep in mind when trying to learn how to play the bass guitar is that the bass guitar is tuned pretty much the same as the regular guitar. The difference in the bass guitar is really the strings. The bass guitars usually Beginning Bass Lesson only have 4 strings and they are not like the strings on the regular guitar, they are quite a bit thicker than the strings on a regular guitar. What you will begin practicing when you first attempt to learn something about the bass guitar is, the notes.

So, if you are a bit clueless in the rhythm department, I'd advise you listen to some music ASAP. I tell you this because it's important for you hear what exactly the bass guitarist is playing in the background so that you know how he is establishing the rhythm in the music. This means that you have to lend out your ears to the bass guitar and not just hear the song kind of passively, like most of us do at all times. There are certain types of music that would help you achieve this sense with genres like Funk, Rock and Soul music.
