Responding to shopper complaints over pigeons being trapped in bird netting under a London railway bridge, the RSPCA (Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) was forced to step in and remove the netting.
Installed to replace old netting that had separated and allowed pigeons to nest under the bridge, the new netting had plastic escape funnels with snacks strategically placed along an escape path to draw the birds out. What was apparent to shoppers, however, was that the new netting was not working and had trapped several pigeons. One shopper noted that mother birds were unable to get to their young.
According to Southend Council's head of public protection, bird netting was originally installed under the c2c railway bridge in Southend High Street to prevent pigeons from
nesting in this prominent area of the town center. The birds were proclaimed a nuisance to shoppers and businesses, as the bird droppings caused quite a mess that called for considerable work to keep clean.
To assuage both sides, an RSPCA officer was called out and humane traps were set to catch the birds so they could be quickly removed.
