Learn self defense that will actually work in a real encounter!
De BISAWiki
If you haven't already realized that learning self defense and the most effective tools that work in an encounter need to be easy. In reality based martial arts there are no complicated styles or forms you need to master like unconventional traditional martial arts systems. When you learn valid self defense techniques you will have a handful of techniques that are valid and will work in a life or death fight encounter.
Back in time I remember going to my Taekwondo classes to learn kicks and punching techniques. I thought I was highly skilled with martial arts with my collection of flashy kicks and spinning hollywood style moves. In the class room of the Taekwondo dojo those moves were valid, but when I got mugs by two guys bigger then me I had nothing that worked against them. Instead I got beat up and ran away luckily escaping with my wallet and my life. Did I learn self defense that was useful in the Taekwondo dojo? No I didn't. Instead I learned how to deal with street self defense situations by being a bouncer in a night club where I was basically being paid to fight on a nightly basis.
In the night club that is where I learned mental alertness, the fact that quitting cigarettes and training at the gym gave me an advantage against my drunken and drugged up attackers in the bar. I also had to learn self defense techniques that were easy to use and remember giving me the skills to effectively take on an attacker and incapacitate him quickly so I could either flee the area or in the club, remove them from the bar.
You need to learn self defense that is valid and has real techniques and moves designed for street based survival. Sure martial arts and their fancy katas and flying kicks and stuff look cool, but how valid is it really in a life or death battle on the street? Highly unlikely you will take out a guy with a flying side kick, who is armed with a knife. You will get stabbed, possibly die. I've seen it at the bar I work at.
If you are going to invest and learn self defense from traditional martial arts, refine your skills and practice with realism outside of the dojo.
