The other day I discussed what a homeowner must look for when selecting a contractor. Today I would want to discuss what an honest builder must consider in running his business. When I first started out, I was gung ho like any company all filled with spit and vinegar. I would put on my polo shirt with my business name proudly displayed. I'd make sure the boots were clean and the jeans were wrinkle free. Yet another day of conquering the planet and heading out. Well one day I landed the large one, I was elated! I just got my foot inside the door of a big job and all I had to accomplish was close. I mean cmon I would be rich! The job was like 2-0 great! (Step out of the way Howard Hughes). Well I appointed the meeting and immediately showed. I do not believe my feet as I walked in to the homeowners house even touched the ground. I had all my numbers on me and was loaded for bear. That is when the clouds began gathering and the vultures were prepared to pick my bones. I had made a display that could have made my mother happy. But, fact got in-the voice of the homeowner as though it had been in slow-motion. I called you here, he explained. To ask you if you could beat this price. Wait a moment! I thought. There is still another cost? He hands the quote to me and my legs go weak. This isnt a price for this job, I thought to myself. This is actually the tab for picking-up the meal! How do a company give this kind of value? I asked the person Is this price for your task that I viewed? Yes he said. And not only that he will do this extra Well there I was young and nave he got the drop o-n me. What exactly did I really do? Before I could believe I said Sure I can do this work Heck and I can also do the additional that someone out of his mind offered! Well I got the job and yeah the price was paid by me. A lesson learned in most of this is if you are an honest company and desire to survive in this field, you'd better be ready to lose some jobs or lose your business. Since there are contractors and clients out there that dont care about your cost and in the long run a lot of the under priced jobs cost both the contractor and homeowner alike. That is where all of the horror stories come from. Additionally, I know that the most seasoned companies will not con-sider taking these jobs. But, recognize this. These contractors are your competitors and consumers need to know this. The contractor will be made by an honest price for the job and homeowners project a positive experience. The expense for companies around the level is very large and there is reasons for their pricing.
