Ultralight hikers are always trying to find the lightest bags. However, light usually means more expensive in regards to backpacking equipment. There are a few ways around this, however, for all those on a tighter budget. You will find ways to buy a lightweight backpacker cheaper, and also ways to produce them. The latter is simpler than it might seem.
Building A Inexpensive Lightweight Backpack
There are some, like ultralight backpacking master Ray Jardine, who sew their own backpacks. I've sewn some clothing and backpacking gear before, and I can tell you from experience that unless you are very skilled at sewing, it's improbable in the future how you expect it to. Also unless you want to become a professional at sewing, creating a backpack by doing this takes a lot of time for the money saved. It would be simpler to just work an additional shift at your work and purchase a great package.
Do not give up on making a light backpack however, although. There's yet another way. I built a backpack that weighs only two pounds even, and it's the full frame-and-hipbelt group. It began with the old body pack I've had since I was fourteen-years-old. I removed the old package, which have been chewed by rats and was beyond repair. Now I was willing to develop my new backpack
The straps and hip belt were still good, fortunately. The shape was remarkably light, and aluminum on it's own. I got a large nylon duffel bag, which alone only weighs nine ounces, and filled it full of my gear. Then I simply used bungee cords to attach it too the shape (zipper out) and it was ready. For the cost of a duffel bag, I'd an external-frame backpack that not only held a lot, but considered only two pounds.
Purchasing A Cheap Light Backpack
There are many approaches to buy cheap light backpacks. Awaiting a good purchase involves mind, but there are faster methods. Listed below are five of them.
1. Take to backpacking or other outdoor boards that allow visitors to offer their gear, like whiteblaze.net. If you think you know anything, you will perhaps want to study about Amish Storage Shed. Boards are wonderful, as you can quickly ask the master questions concerning the group.
2. Try Ebay or other online auction sites. I have seen some good bags get pretty cheap on Ebay.
3. Cd shops sometimes have cheap light backpacks. More often, they've large old packs and day packs, but think creatively. I've seen old frame packs at thrift shops, and understood that as described above, I could throw the package, and utilize the frame using a duffel bag.
4. Get used bags at rummage sales. Try to find ads that mention outdoor equipment. You could be in a position to get it ahead of the sale starts, if you call first, to determine if they have a you want. Store early, and discuss. I offered my almost-new Kelty frame-pack for fifteen pounds at my garage sale.
5. Fortuitously, unlike with other equipment, light backpacks in many cases are cheaper compared to the large ones to start with. Lighten the load, and you can save money too. Frame-less ultralight bags frequently weigh less-than two pounds and in many cases are on-sale at under a hundred dollars. My own Go-Lite light backpack weighs just thirteen ounces, and it was also a cheap backpack, on-sale for when I bought it just eighty pounds.
