Utilizing The Right Singing Lessons

Over the course of two days, six master teachers present teaching demonstrations after case histories of students have been discussed. Concrete links are made between various teaching strategies and the scientific and medical information covered in other courses of the PDP program. Janet Pranschke, moderator. Many NYSTA members attend this class every year, taking away useful new studio strategies and greater awareness of their own teaching style.

Barbara and Alex have left a legacy from their days in Southport. Not only are there many singers who owe their training to Barbara, but the Mozart Singing Competition (originally Mozart Competition) is still running. They started the competition in 1987, but by that time I had decided that I was probably better suited to being a choral singer than a soloist. I am still keen to improve my technique and welcome opportunities to learn new things, but there comes a time when you have to recognize your limitations. For me, choral singing offers immense pleasure – without the stress and anxiety of singing on your own.

There is so much great work going on across the country, encouraging confidence and enjoyment of singing. Recently, my amazing Mum, who has always loved singing and now is very much involved with a supportive and motivational choir up north called ‘Read’s Warblers’ (run by the incredibly inspirational Jenny Read), was involved in a weekend of guided vocal tuition. She has nothing but praise to sing (pardon the pun) of workshop leaders Kathy Taylor Jones and Caroline Jay. The experience has worked wonders on her confidence and increased her enjoyment of singing to even greater levels than previously (if that’s possible).

There are basically three major approaches to vocal pedagogy, all related to how the mechanistic and psychological controls are employed within the act of singing. Some voice instructors advocate an extreme mechanistic approach that believes that singing is largely a matter of getting the right physical parts in the right places at the right time, and that correcting vocal faults is accomplished by calling direct attention to the parts which are not working well. Most voice teachers, however, believe that the truth lies somewhere in between the two extremes and adopt a composite of those two approaches.

Hastinapura Foundation was established by Ada Albrecht in 1981. She introduced Indian philosophy and became a Guru for the Argentines seeking wisdom. She wrote a number of books such as ¨The Saints and teachings of India¨ and ¨The teachings of the monks from Himalayas¨. Gustavo Canzobre was one of her singing teachers in Essex students, who is now the Director of the Hastinapur college of professors. He was seventeen years old when he became interested in Indian wisdom. During the Third Festival of India organised by the embassy in Buenos Aires in November 2010, he gave a talk on the temple architecture of South India.
